Hi Fi upgrade

Hello all, and Happy Easter!

I'm looking to upgrade the Hi fi in my 1995 C2 coupe. I have a set of 5' Diamond component speakers with separate tweeters which I had in my previous car which I'd like to fit. Will these go straight in, or are they too small for the front door speaker apertures?
Also, should I retain the existing grilles or change them?
Finally, the car does not have an amp or sub at present; ideally I'd like to fit these so do you have any suggestions as to what to use and where to site them so as not to encroach on interior or luggage space.

Any help much appreciated

regards

Keith

Keith,
Don't know much about speakers but my audio man said he would use space under the driver's seat for an amp he was trying to sell me. My car has the PA1000 alarm system under the passenger seat.

I am sure I've seen a post in the past about speaker sizes (including tricks for dealing with different size speakers).

I recently added some 5.25" MB Quart speakers and had to cut a small amount out of the door card, so your 5" speakers should fit with no cutting. I used the grills that came with the speakers as they were very discreet and the old ones didn't fit anyway! If the original speaker grill fits, a stealth install would be my preference. The tweeters were a challange, but once I removed all the bits inside, the MB Quart tweeters fitted straight in, so the install looks OEM.

Keith, some amps will fit under the drivers or passenger seats - I have a Genesis profile 2 fitted under the passenger seat.

I didn't go for a sub given space, but fitted 6.5" components in the front which gave me enough bass via an Alpine head unit.

I'm also looking to have the system upgraded. I hope to find an amplifier that will fit in the space currently occupied by the standard Nokia unit. This as well as the PA100 control unit are located under the driver seat on this car. I'm looking to do a 'stealth' install as described above - so using the existing speaker grills etc. If I can get a decent Becker head unit that would be nice as well.

all the best

Shane - interested to read your post; i thought with the engine managment system under the passenger seat, that would not leave much room for an amp? Clearly not the case!

engine management system under the seats?
Surely not?
(Not that I have any idea where it is.... someone will be along in a mo to put me right)

What is the slim box in front of the space-saver spare wheel? (not the battery, the other side)

marke2 - see pic on Page 369 of Porsche 993 by Adrian Streather. Or have a look under your left seat! The unit in the front could be something to do with the ABS. tim

I had my amp (JL) fitted in the luggage space..its so thin it hardly impinges on the restricted space...... I also had a sub fitted behind the passenger seat (10 inch) the rear of which is moulded into the seat well.....and not visible from the exterior of the car.....the rear seat can still be used for a small child but thats it....the passenger seat rear travel is restricted by approx 2 inches...but nobody has complained yet...the bass is tremendous from this set up......in fact need to turn the sub down when carrying passenger!!!!!

If you need phots let me know....

Regards

ah, the Adrian Streather book again - really must order a copy, was expecting it as a birthday pressy in Feb but expected source claimed she thought it looked too technical for me![:(]

hi,

has anyone tried the Blaupunkt sub-woofer that sems to have been discontinued ( possible troublesome??[] ) that was quite small, rectangular in shape - pre-encased in a black, plastic casing, think 200mm was one fo the dimension - but think it was designed to take up far less space[;)]than the usual, round/cover subwoofer??

Tim, in response to your question, I can see nothing else under my passenger seat apart from the amp ...

I'll have a better look when the car is out of the dark garage, but I don't recall seeing anything when the seat was out.

Yes please to the photos. In my haste to get adequate sound in my car, I bought one of those all in one amp/sub things that are supposed to go under your seat. Mine didn't fit so it's now behind the drivers seat in the footwell. It's OK, and an imporvement on the "before" situation, but too inconsistent - sometimes boomy, sometimes weak, always flat, depending on the music playing. If you've got a solution, I'm interested...

Cheers, Craig.

Here is a phot of the sub..

It was a special order via Sextons. I had to wait approx 3 weeks...no cutting involved...the rear ofthe sub is shaped to fit in the seat well. The sub is covered in similar "carpet" material so looks like its always been there. . the sub gives an excellent response considering its restricted box siae and position.

Hope this helps

Thanks agiain - it's pretty neat isn't it, but not easy to see what's going on - I guess the sub has it's own cabinet that is sort of wedge shaped to fill the footwell in front of the rear seat? The only thing is I'm loathe to put an amp in the front boot as we really need the space for our luggage for our trips away. Would it be rude to ask what the damage was for the amp and sub to be supplied and fitted? You're only up the road from me - any chance of me taking a look some time before I commit myself? cheers
