Tim, I tell a lie. Having had the car out this weekend I had a proper look under the passenger seat and there is something towards the back, fastened to the floor. My amp goes tight to it, but remains hidden under the seat, and with a cooling fan on top it functions fine.

I recently followed Maurice (see FAQs) and fitted Rainbow SLX230 speakers and tweeters in the front together with the Alpine 9850i head unit. Great sound and easy to fit, the main speakers are a direct replacement, the tweeters need the doorcard removing and the hole in the doorcard enlarging (easily done with a sharp scalpel). Sure, I could've gone to the trouble of fitting an amp but the Alpine has a very good output anyway. I was a little unsure about the look of the Alpine unit on the shelf but it looks better when fitted. The advantage to me of this unit is that the iPod stays in the glovebox connected by a single wire which carries the sound and charges the iPod. Very fast control of the iPod via the head unit and a display that's easy to read on the move.

David - I think I've got the same speakers, but I'm really disappointed with them. I reckon they've no room to perform in my car - i have the longer door pockets without the deeper speaker housings that seem to have been an upgrade on some 993's - have you got those? I'm checking out day1zero's sub kit later this evening - should be interesting and I'm considering going that way next.
I had upgraded decent speakers but only the original blaupunkt tape unit when I bought the car.
Merely added a quality single shot CD head unit and the sound is good - I went for a Nakamichi which slots straight in and is very much in keeping with the car's genre no silver dials and flashing lights
