Hi

Hi Larry, Good luck with the restoration. I'm sure you'll find a good source of guidance and encouragement on this forum.

could not find a place to say Hi as a new member so thought i would just do it by making a post ( feel free to point me to the correct place )

my name is larry and i've just picked up my first 944 , needs work to the sills and interior refitting ( all ready removed for welding )

found a pile of receipts in side the car where the last owner started to restore the car in 2010 but looking at the tax disks it was last taxed in 2006
going to be a bit of a work in progress but hopefully by the end i'll have my self a nice clean 944.

Welcome Larry, this is the perfect place for your first post and thank you for the pic [:)] If you need any help or have any questions just feel free to ask

Hi Larry and welcome. Interesting colour, is that crystal green or is it just the light? I'm replacing one of my sills at the moment and am documenting it in the 'oh my god help' thread. Rob

thanks for all the warm welcomes [:)] restoration is not going to be too quick so i know im not going to be on the road any time soon

yup , its green but not too sure if keeping it that color or changing it to black ( last owner said the green was a rare color ? ? ) bought mine with the drivers side sill all ready cut out for welding a new one in so im just going to do both sides so i know at least there both done. other plans are to change the interior for prefably a black one & add a rear slotted valance but i'll do a thread once i get started to keep a update [;)]

Welcome :) Yes, it is quite a rare colour, in fact I can't remember when I last saw one. Your car and your choice, of course, but I think it would be an odd call to repaint a car that's in a rare colour in a common one. There are a lot of black 944s around.

It looks like Crystal Green to me. More common on 1986 cars, but never a common colour and short lived too.

had a bit of time today to take a look over the car and the color has grown on me and plus my mate was not down my ear about changing the color [:)] found the information sticker still in the boot and the color code is something like LM6Y ? Rear side lights were not working so pulled the bulb holder's apart and cleaned all connections and now the passenger one is working but no live feed to the drivers side. Indicators and hazard light seem not to have a relay or have a faulty relay as the light in the dials comes on but there is no external indicator lights working Front roll bar reconnected as both ends as they had been removed to fit new bushes ( new ones came with the car) Central locking seems to be working but drivers door lock solenoid it making a right noise where it don't seem to realise its supposed to stop when its unlocked. Only part i can see that is missing from the car is the air box top part [:(]

drivers side was all ready cut back by the last owner and its going to need a hell of a lot of work & ive not had a chance to have a real look at the passenger side sill yet [:(]

Before you get happy with the grinder beware driver side sills are low in stock and passenger side sills no longer available. My local OPC parts man said that passenger side could be available again soon as they allocated a new part number. Good luck with it and keep photos coming in. These cars are worth saving and replacing the entire sill with the factory panel is definitely the way forward, unless the corrosion is very localised.

Now that's a bit of welcome news... my driver's side sill has been replaced but the nearside is original. It was in good nick when inspected internally in January but I am concious of the fact that it won't last forever. Should they come in stock, I might just have one put by for a rainy day!

luckly enough i have a body shop friend who looked at it today for the welding and when i said to him that from what i understand porsche don't do the sills any more he replied " i'll be making sills not buying sills " hes got about 50 years in the body shop / engineering game so i know if he's doing them they will be perfect ( only down side would be losing the jacking point dimond ) or my other choice is to find a 944 being broke or accident damaged that has good sills and see if i can buy the sills and chop them out to piece them in. ive been amazed at how many people that call in to our place were instantly drawn to the 944 considering the age and condition its in :p

Hi Larry and welcome, These cars always attract a stare or two, yours certainly will with that lovely Rare colour, please don't change it

That's exactly what my guy said. Any half-decent restorer should be able to fabricate whatever is needed, otherwise many older classics would have been scrapped for the lack of "new" body parts. I was lucky and only needed some very small patches replacing, perhaps a couple of hours work, and he really was against cutting perfectly good metal out to weld in a whole sill. I think there's a cost implication, though, when you need the whole outer sill and a chunk of work to the inner, as the new sills are a complete front-to-rear section. They were only c. £150 a side, so that's not many hours of a body shop's time if there is a lot of rot in the area, and might be the easiest/cheapest option in many cases.

OSs are available. For NSs you can use 968 parts, but they have several indentations along the top which locate the shark fins.
