High Mileage Pre-Varioram 993 Carrera 4

Thanks Pete.

I talked to the Hartech guys the other day and they know the car very well. Everything is sorted on it which gave me the confidence to buy it. It is a little far for me to go to but I am sure they would be happy to have the car back in.[:)]

About 4 years ago there was an article in '911 World' about 175K+ 993s. They featured two in perfect nick and running order. I wonder if they're still on the road?

Well done - enjoy your purchase. As someone said - at the mileage some of us have on our cars we can use them as much as we want !!

Well done and welcome to the select group of black C4s!

I guess that's one of your 19" wheels in your avatar - must admit it looks rather good[:)]

Thanks Mark. Would love to see pics of everyone's cars. Will post up some when I take some for Hagerty.
I can't stop looking at the car. I have owned many cars, Chimaera, RX7, Boxster (sorry!), M3 but the 993 just looks so beautiful. Getting to know it when I drive it is like nothing I have ever experienced before. Amazing.

Yes I remember the article. It would be interesting to know (if they're still on the road) what the mileage for these cars is now and of any work required.

People are split on 993 looks, apparently. It didn't make the top 100 on one recent poll I saw.

In my view it's always been one of the best looking cars ever made. There is quite a lot of "anti-Porsche" prejudice out there, apparently, so people can't just see it for what it is, a superb piece of engineering.

......... one of the few cars that women think looks good .. IME, anyway.
cheers, Maurice [:D]

Well to put cat amongst you 993ers - not all women think like you would like to believe Maurice.

My wife thought the 993 4S I had my eye on a few years ago was not only 'old fashioned' looking but was also a 'stinker'!! Sorry chaps.

Please don't shoot the messenger!!![:)][:)]

I know (TTBoMK) one of them was 'traded' for a 996 GT3 a while ago .. it was an S, and was upgraded with cams, cats etc at close to 200 K. Led to believe it was quick, and certainly sounded very healthy .. [;)]

cheers, Maurice [8D]

No Maurice, you don't get rid of me that easily [:D] I put her up for sale, but the economy went south at about the same time and I bought a dedicated race car instead of the GT3 idea. So, I'm still the owner. The car is still going strong and is at about 197,000 miles now. I'm returning it to 'road spec' and I'll use it a couple of times a year, so the pattern GT3 seats, harness bar and R888's are all coming off and I'm returning the car to a more standard format.

It's a difficult one really; we all like a change but that car is brilliant in every respect and to be honest it's very difficult to justify throwing money in the pot to move up into a newer vehicle. There's a couple of niggles; the driver's electric window has stopped working and the glovebox lid is rattling, but they're not bad things to sort and don't justify getting rid. The flip side is that the car is great to drive and goes like hell, plus it's a Vesuvius 2S and there aren't that many of those around [;)]

I've not been around these parts for a while, but I'll try and look in a bit more often.

All the best!

Ahem, well, err, it's Japanese [:D]

I plumped for a very early Impreza WRX STI RA, the one with the lightweight glass, aluminium panels, no ABS or driver aids, etc. It's a bit mental; quickest thing I've ever driven and leaves the C2S for dead around a track [8D]. It's only a baby, so not stupidly big power and I've built it from a near bare shell so it's caged, no sound deadening, kevlar seat and all that. I just got to the stage where I was sick of spending big money running the 993 on track and a 911 race car was out of the question because I didn't see the point in spending more to go slower. I've purchased and built the entire package for just a little more than the 993 engine rebuild cost me, so figure that one out!

I've still got the early 911 FIA project on the go though, which is coming on nicely and might be a bit more to your taste [;)]

We'll have to catch up trackside at some point.

All the best!

Just coming back on this thread, Good to see a post 200K 993 still running. Did you mention it had a rebuild though?

Quick update, loving the C4 and now that it is garaged (especially over the snow and cold period we had a few weeks ago!) I can't help but sneak a peek at it at night and long for the sunny weekends, where it comes out and I get to drive my boy to his rugby, daughter to her parties!

Recently did a weekend trip 200 miles round trip with the wife, treated her to a spa and shopping weekend!
My treat was getting to drive the car on a gorgeoous sunny Saturday and what a car!

What is a Vesuvius 2S Oliver?

One that looks like this [;)]

The registration document says it's grey, for some strange reason. I'm not that good with colour, but it doesn't look grey to me [:D] These pictures were taken at about 192,000 miles.

wow nice looking car and great track shot. I take it has had work done to the engine and uprated suspension/brakes etc? Give me some idea :)

Thanks for the compliment. I have to confess the driver in the track shot isn't me; it's my instructor and close friend Andy McKenna, who has an uncanny ability to repeat tricks like that time and time again and without an LSD in sight [:D] I'm still learning [;)] Here's the same shot from the back:

The car has had modest modifications; Bilstein HD's and an alignment by Robin at Ninemeister covers the running gear, but the rest of the suspension is standard. The brakes are based on standard calipers and discs, suplimented with Pagid Blue pads and ATE Super Blue fluid. That combination takes everything that's been thrown at it and has never failed. Disc and pad life is good, with about fifteen months between changes based on about ten trackdays a year and road use in between. Tyres have mainly been Continental Sport Contacts, which are fantastic on track and give very good life. I've had Toyo 888's on more recently that are awesome on track, but I could only get 4,000 miles from a set, they were a bit dubious in the wet and very harsh on the road.

Engine modifications are from Colin at Ninemeister. Cams, uprated springs and retainers, lightweight flywheel and clutch, Dansk 100 cell catalysts and a re-map. I went with these parts when the engine had it's first rebuild at 189,000 miles and would recommend anybody to go and see Colin.

Your car looks great, by the way [;)]

Hey we all have to learn from the masters right! Lucky you have a contact who can show you how to get the most out of the car.
How much did the rebuild costs and does it feel like a brand new car with it all sorted...and them some I suppose? With those mods will it be pushing 300 plus bhps? [:D]

The engine modifications were done as part of a full rebuild, so I can't put a price on the labour element. The Cams, springs, retainers, flywheel, clutch and catalysts came to around £3k and the re-map was £350. Power is about 330BHP / 300 LbFt, with fantastic delivery. It's a totally different car to drive.
