I bought a 944S2 cab with 142,500 miles to use for 50,000 miles a year. I changed job in that time and it took me a little over a year to get it to 192,000 when I sold it (I was bored of it). It handled the miles without breaking sweat.
It didn't cost a lot to run, the cams being the only big expense and I factored the likelihood of those needing to be replaced into the purchase price. It depreciated 1,500 notes over 17 months and I sold it with a small dent courtesy of a French camper van at Le Mans as well as the extra 49,500 miles. The secret is to buy a good one to start with and nowadays that means not rusty as well as mechanically sound.
No way on this planet will it do 30+mpg on a congested motorway commute though, and I respectfully suggest that neither will a Turbo ever do 36mpg for any extended period of driving, nor will a WRX see the happy side of 30mpg ever. It's very easy to get mpg to drop but really, really difficult to keep it high, and even if it is possible to get 30mpg reliably out of an S2, what's the point of buying a fun car if you have to drive it for economy the whole time?
Sorry to be negative, but I think you knew the answer already.
