Higher Octane Fuel

I'm with Tony - pretty sure the stickers under my Lux's filler cover calls for 96RON minimum and the S2 95RON unleaded minimum.ORIGINAL: GC8
Virtually all 944s were intended to run on 98RON leaded fuel.

Do Porsche actually recommend Super Unleaded with the 944 S2 and Turbo then? I take it they're fitted with knock sensors? I know that it's recommended with the 968. I usually put in V-Power, personally.
The S2's and turbos have knock sensors for sure, but not sure about what they're mapped for. I'm 99.9% certain that turbo's were mapped for 95RON.
Back in the '80's you couldn't really choose - leaded fuel was higher than 95RON but when unleaded came it in was initially only available in 95 RON, so i'd be surprised if they were mapped for 98 RON - which isn't readily available even today - most super unleaded's are 97 RON. You don't want to be running your 98 RON mapped car on 97 RON fuel.
Scott,
very interseting what you have written and i totally agree with what you have said,do not tell your missus what i have written but you really need another 944 t in your life, flog that s max thing buy a 944 t and put it on a classic policy.
Then buy a cheaper Alhambra,Sharan, Galaxy etc
Has anyone any idea what fuel RON Lindsey chips are mapped to as that is what i run in my Turbo S,i can get knock if i really nail it 18 psi + i obviously back off if this happens..............................BANG !.
I am going to fit a TIAL wastegate shortly, do i fit bigger injectors to cope with this ? i know that i will have to change the dip switches on the chips to run a DP wastgate What does this actually do ? i am currently running a re-sprung original wastgate 3 bar FPR with a fancy go faster fuel rail pressure gauge.cometic headgasket, Bailey DV,standard injectors.
I normally run BP Ultimate as we do not have much of a choice where i live,Shell Optimax is filled whenever i can find it or recently when down in the Manchester Area, Texaco higher Octane which i rate (the car likes it).
Jim.

With a cat ?.
I dont know how to answer this... Surely you know very well that virtually all UK 944s did not have a catalytic converter? This being the case I think that youre being silly.
Make your mind up, is it all 944s or UK 944s [8|].

Which other 944s would we be talking about on the PCGB site then? German ones? North American ones?
I don't limit my options or consider that I know it all.
Coming late to this thread: I alway suse high-octane fuel in my S2. Whenever I can buy it, I do. Yes, it's a smidge more expensive, but I am sure the car runs more smoothly and pulls more enthusiastically on it. It may be placebo, but I don't think it is.
What I can quantatively say is that the MPG is better on higher-octane fuel. I am anal enough to measure MPG very closely, and the likes of Tesco99, V-Power and the rest of them give 10-15% more MPG than normal fuel, measured across the full range of motoring conditions. In terms of pence/mile, this makes it cost about the same as normal fuel, so there is no financial penalty in using them.
Biofuels; yes, Tesco claim to mix a lot of biofuel in their Tesco99 product, but I am not aware of any downsides to this, and it certainly hasn't deterred me from using it.
American fuel ratings are measured differently. In the UK we use the Research Octane Number (RON). There is another measure called the Motor Octane Number (MON), and the americans use the average of these to rate their fuels (which they sometimes call AKI - Anti Knock Index). AKI = (MON+RON)/2.
Oli.

Do you not? You keep trying to be clever though, without much success.

I won't entertain a battle of wits with someone that is obviously unarmed.
You have added nothing to this thread: all youve tried to do is make yourself look clever and undermine me.
The remark which makes you look the most foolish, is the suggestion that I am a 'know it all'. Am I a 'know it all': or do I simply have a lot of accumulated knowledge/experience having driven, owned, modified, competed in and dealt in these cars for approaching twenty years? Everything that I know was learnt the hard way through practical experience, rather than being picked up and repeated on a forum; and I try to help wherever I can.
You neednt make aother stupid post, as Ive placed you on ignore.
There was 2 3 4 and 5 star at various times think covering 91 - 105 Octane (maybe 102 - my memory is fading)
