Nothing beats holding the S2 in gear and just letting those revs rise !! The s2 is super smooth and such a superb torquey engine, driving it is a bliss !!
The turbo boys will upgrade to a S2 one day !![][

When I've driven an S2 I thought someone had stolen 2 of the cylinders. [:'(][
To the o.p....drive it like you stole it!!

I have an 'S' therefore have no option but to rev the nuts off it otherwise I get left behind by buses at the traffic light Grand Prix [
In all honesty I drove around very carefully in mine when I first got it, partially because of its age and partially of the stories which run round the web about how delicate the 'S' is.
B+*!ocks
Now I've had it for 2 years I realise that a lot of the stories were rubbish, the 'S' has to be driven hard, just make sure that everything is maintaned properly and you will have great fun

Not to worry - I heard 2x 'bastard' and 1x 'arse' on Radio4 the other afternoon. That on top of a 'wanking' the night before.
Whatever is the ****ing world coming to?
Disgusted of Sheffield.
I'm glad to hear you make up for your night's depraved entertainment by listening to Radio 4 the next day ;-)
Sorry, couldn't resist! (Edit - huh, I see the sweary filter is now catching the night before word too - it rhymes with banking...)
To the OP - my 944 is my only car, so I normally drive it relatively gently. But every so often, when the engine is warm and the road is clear, I think it likes to stretch its legs a bit more. I certainly do. I don't think I've ever had it over 5,000 RPM in 2 years of ownership, but we've had a LOT of fun in those two years.

Are you serious? Never above 5,000 RPM?
That is definitely not trying hard enough.

That's impossible, must be a typo. Probably meant never been under 5000rpm[

Ahem, yes - I meant never under 5,000 RPM.To be honest, I'd not really looked at the rev counter that much when pressing on hard - I'll try it, and see how high I'm actually revving it... But it doesn't need to be revved that hard to be fun on my local lanes.
All joking apart the lux drives well in the mid range. Ringing the revs doesn't give you a lot of extra benefit without a turbo to cram more air in or 16 valves. The 8v is more about throttle response and torque.

Thanks for the replies everyone. So it seems like I've been driving it like a big girl's blouse.
Time to push on a bit then and I've gone a step further and booked a trackday at Knockhill for next month. That should give me a good idea of its (and my) capabilities.
is that the trackscotland one on the 13th ? if so, i should be there with my S2
Yes thats the one. I reckon we might have met before: Did I buy a set of Mazda MX5 alloys from you sometime ago?

I am lucky to live in a reativley on uncongested part of the country and my father lives a nice 170 miles away down some of the nicests roads in the country. 1 mile from me and I am on B roads with twists and turns galore, hump, yumps and everything inbetween, dont the 44 yump well!!
Had a nice ding dong on the way home from dads in Argyll not long ago with a Impreza Sti 2000 vintage and to my shame I pulled over and let him by but he did'nt loose me, was just worried the straps holding my sea kayak on might breakl and 1. cause him a bit of an injury and 2. the kayak cost more than the 44.[
Owned an number of quick 200 + bhp cars for 15 years or so and the S2 is the best drivers car by far, turn in is fantastic, the steering alive, the tourque needs to be feelt to be believed from a non turbo car.
So drive it as hard as you want just let it heat up and cool down, give it nice oil and filters often and enjoy
Oh yes change the cam chain if its close to 130000 miles and not been done[

Same here when it isn't suffering electrical failures, 172K miles on the clock and after fettling she made 227 Bhp on the rollers. Does burn a little oil on track but as long as one asks others to look for puffs of smoke along the pit straight or when braking I can't see any reason not to properly rag these motors on the track until they die.ORIGINAL: MarkK
My turbo s spent 110'mins at the weekend flat out,it has 180k on the clock and runs like a sewing machine and pulls like a train[]

I drove the car a lot between Letterkenny and Galway (165 miles) last year...! My last run was brilliant at 4am no traffic and a good steady pace... No traffic .. No Garda .. No problem.. Looking forward to March when I get her out again ....!
