How many previous owners?

I think some of our cars have had less owners than perhaps we think as I believe a few years ago a plate change would count as a new owner on the log book.
By sending a fiver off to DVLA you can get the names and addresses of previous owners.

Thats interesting. Mine seems to have had quite a few number plate changes. I feel slightly better now.

'fraid not. A plate change should never add a new owner to the book. Common misconception, granted.

I am the 9th owner. The 7th owner bought it in 1998 (for £11,950!!) and sold in 2006. So in the 7 years prior to that it had 6 owners which sounds consistent with others. I hate to say it (and make sweeping generalisations) but new premium cars tend to have lots of owners because they are either bought by money that isn't there, and thus must be sold on or by genuinely well off people who have the money to buy the new best thing a year later. Just have a look on Pistonheads at all the two and three owner Caymans available, a car that is no more than three years old tops. The BMW Z4 also seems to suffer this fate too, for some reason. But some friends have just bought a three owner RX-8 and that's a 54 plate, so maybe we're just a fickle nation.

This did come up before, and plate changes did count as a change of owner back then. Apparently. Probably.....[&:]

Don't forget that a lot of late-80s sports cars were company-owned. Mine passed from company to the driver, a director, owning it privately. He then registered it to his wife, and then another family member. So, four owners in three years, but actually never left the house.

This needs clarifying as you're giving people false info/hope about the plate change/owner thing. I've had cherished registrations on all my cars since 1973, and NEVER has a plate change added another owner.

Plate change will not add another owner, my car has had 4 different plates and 5 owners. So if that was true I would be the only owner of my car!
Well I'm struggling with that one..... and I've had no wine today.

So, which part of "apparently, probably " was hard to understand......[&:]
I'd like to think that the people reading this would understand that it is not a certain thing. My car has very clearly only a certain number of owners, and some of the changes are plate changes. I'd never have considered mortgaging the house on that basis, but did buy a pretty good old car.
Please feel free to speak to me personally if you feel that "apparently and probably" are not sufficient to allow people the intelligence to check the history fully.....
