How many previous owners?

I'm the third owner of my S2, and both the previous owners had private plates on it.

It has therefore had more plate changes than owners ...

Original plate (for first sale from OPC to first owner) > first cherished plate.

First cherished plate > age related plate (different to the first one, for some reason), for sale to second owner.

Age related plate > Second cherished plate

Second cherished plate > another age related plate (different again), for sale to third owner (me.)

Each change of plate therefore did not count as a change of owner. Having said that, I know that some changes of details can trigger a change of owner, if not done correctly. A car I once owned had the previous owner as three owners, as he registered himself as a new owner every time he moved house. I think the mistake was made by the chap in question tho'.

This needs clarifying as you're giving people false info/hope about the plate change/owner thing. I've had cherished registrations on all my cars since 1973, and NEVER has a plate change added another owner.

So, which part of "apparently, probably " was hard to understand......[&:]

I'd like to think that the people reading this would understand that it is not a certain thing. My car has very clearly only a certain number of owners, and some of the changes are plate changes. I'd never have considered mortgaging the house on that basis, but did buy a pretty good old car.

Please feel free to speak to me personally if you feel that "apparently and probably" are not sufficient to allow people the intelligence to check the history fully.....

Goodness me, an invitation to 'step outside', handbags at dawn !

Luckily I'm well aware of the meanings of both 'probably' and 'apparently'. I knew that English degree would come in handy sometime. The thing is though, that neither is it 'probable' or 'apparent' that at some point in the past a plate change would add an extra owner to the V5 registration document. It's just WRONG.

That's what needed clarified as people were indeed getting confused judging by some of the posts in this thread !

It is quite feasable that, depending on the way that DVLA were notified, an address change could add an owner to the vehicles details. 'Traders' may have also have added to ownership, especially if the vehicle was in posession for more than three months. By the same token, (and in the not so distant past), it was not unheard of for owners not to bother registering with DVLA at all. Nowadays, continuous registration is required, and it is the last owner who is responsible for informing DVLA.

So to clarify (I hope), whilst the V5 document serves as a good indicator as to the number of previous owners, it is not entirely reliable; therefore, check or cross-reference with any other supporting evidence that you have available (service history, bills etc). It should soon become apparent if the vehicle has any missing owners or history, and indeed it may even prove that it has had fewer owners than DVLA have recorded.

Personally, I think that the service history is generally a better guide as to how the vehicle has been looked after rather than the number of previous owners.

Mines had 3 owners for the 176,000 miles

1st was registered to an Old Peoples Home - even better than a lady driver? [:D]

Second owner did 150,000+ miles in it over 12 years

And then me [:)]

I brought my S2 in 1996, six and a half years old and six owners, since then only me!

The 964 also has 6 former keepers, the last one owned it since October 2000 and spent fortunes, absolute fortunes (hopefully I won't have to now[8|])
