How to set your car on fire in 1 easy lesson!

Not a good afternoon for me, went to start my own 944 to shift some cars about and the main fuel line split on the fuel rail. I started the car and left it running for a couple of minutes and went to go and get keys for my S2 from my keybox. Heard a wooomph and saw some flames. Went and switched my hose on rather quickly and popped the bonnet. Flames everywhere. It was nearly time for the firebrigade but managed to dampen the flames. Everything plastic under the bonnet is rather the worse for wear. Connectins to injectors look toast and everything is smelling, anyone got an engine bay loom for a late model turbo?

Bad luck, but sounds like you were quick on your feet and caught it just in time. Just goes to show that the way these cars were built lulls you into a false sense of security and in reality any car that is 20yrs old ish there are component's in there that are way past their best and could do with replacement. Should this maybe serve as a warning to everyone else with original rubber fuel hoses?

Alasdair, was it the hose at the front end of the fuel rail ? if so these were subject to a recall and OPC will still do them.
Thought you would have all the bits required [:)]
 
Bad luck mate - had a few fuel hoses split over the year's but always caught them in the nick of time. Glad you are in one piece, and at least the damage is fixable.
 
Very sorry for you, glad you caught it in time!

This may make you feel better, its what happened to my early lux and nobody was about to catch it.

Flippin 'eck. Nightmare. Glad to hear no-one as hurt. I've just had all my fuel lines replaced and now glad I went for the safe and secure Porsche OEM ones.
 
Dont touch anything unless youre wearing chemical gloves! Underbonnet fires can lead to extremely harmful chemicals being released/deposited - contamination can lead to amputation in extreme case. Better safe than sorry.
 
All the burnt bits will be binned tomorrow, have the red scrapper to pinch bits off and the whole lot will be steam cleaned. I was looking for an excuse to pull the engine, looks like I have one now! 150,000 on it and no records of a head gasket change so no better time than the present!

Sorry to hear of your bad luck Alasdair. Firedamages are a good reason to start bigger & better restorations. Son's project was also a fire damage and looked much worse compared what you have there.
 
Olli, it seems to be mostly just the plastic bits that have melted, there was also burning around the turbo area so I presume the fuel has been burning in the nice platform above the top balance belt area. I have a stack of other stuff to do so it will be put to one side for the time being.

Had an engine fire on a Sierra Cosworth, injector not fully sat in and sealed sprayed a mist over the distributor and.............WHHOOOPMPH, it was on the drive at home after i had just fitted a new headgasket.
A small section of wiring the only victim.....................SCARY
My 220 has the new fuel line section, i am booking the other in to have it done at OPC.

Very sorry to hear that.

Makes me think about doing mine anyway ... I don't fancy messing on my own with that... what sort of cost would you be looking at for parts and labour from a non-rip off garage?

Just back from Mull rally and colected head from Gordon thanks again for your help. Will be in touch re a few bits and bobs

Speaking to the OPC, the fuel hoses were changed circa March 88 at the factory, my later car is not subject to a recall, Outrun check with your OPC with your chassis number they will tell you if your car needs the fuel line changed.
Alasdair what month and year is your car ?
Any further forward with the rear fuel lines you were looking to get done ?
