how to tell if 996 gen 1 or 2

The salesman assured me that as the lights didn't have any orange bits in them it must be a Gen 2. My wife has since put me right as it doesn't have a glovebox for her to put things in.

I don't think Gen 1 or 2 matters as this is a fabulous car and since I bought it just over a year ago it really puts a smile on my face whenever I drive it. Only wish I'd spent less time thinking about it and taken the plunge and got one many years ago.

Slightly bigger on cc yes but not quicker!.

Track times tend to be better in MK1's I think
cant actually find the proof but I believe this is the case as its a lighter car.

LOL look at the first comment here!

Yeah, But Louie Spence don't travel light.

Fastestlaps .com used to hold some vs track times of the 996 variants but there database does not seem to have it now.
But lap times for Mk1's were generally a hair over the line.

Gen 2 are heavy because of all the stuff we keep in the glovebox. 😜

To be honest there is not a lot of difference between them, a couple of creature comforts , the gen2 has a bit more power lower in the rev range, has a better exhaust noise and produces better MPG.

(I got this over a 50+ mile stretch of the m25 including the dartford crossing, normally I avarage 22mpg).

The main difference for me is that I can tell it apart from my wife's Boxster at the front.

On your link the gen 2 is quicker on the vairano track, nearly a second quicker at 0-100, 2 tenths quicker at 0-62 and has a higher top speed...... Louis spence is faster than you think.

Les,

Your wifes Boxter nearly looks like a proper 996[:D]

I saw your post on mpg the other day and I must admit it does amaze me just how good the 996 is on fuel.
My little work run about only does about 40mpg its crap and its a 1.2

Previous BMW's I've owned have had shocking MPG

My 996 is my work runabout. Done 600 miles so far this week.

Was going to get a cheep car for work then thought: for around £5 a day in fuel I could take the Porsche..... Best £5 I ever spend.
