How ugly is the 968

with the headlamps up...

I had the misfortune this morning to walk in front of the car with the lights up and it frightened the living daylights out of me - it looks like a giant manic frog [:D]

It got me thinking that the 968 is not a good looking car - i think they look odd from side on as they always look like they sit too low at the back - I think due to the wide expanse of bodywork around that area []

In fact, I think the best view is from the back of the car, or the hedgehog view of the front on a sunny day with no headlamps up...

LOL You can't say things like that [;)]

Although I tend to agree from certain angles the car does look a bit odd, but from other angles i.e. from the rear, which is the view most people will get, they look the dogs danglies [:D] I love them anyway.

Oh dear, you know what Matt, i've been thinking the very same thing for some time now but was too scared to come out in public and say it aloud. I did mention it, in confidence [8D], to another 968 owner and he looked at me as though i'd just admitted that i'd had sex change and from now on i want to be called Loretta [:-].

It started for me one night after i'd parked the car up leaving the side lights on and returning to the car i noticed those 2 dirty great frog eyes sticking up and i thought eeuuuwww! the car looks ridiculous and i swore that i'd make sure the headlamps were down in future before i left car.

After that uncomfortable experience i started driving around and leaving the moment as long as i could before i had to turn the headlights on and instead using the driving lamps until it was dark. Then i find on another forum that people that drive around on there driving lamps are considered to be a *%$#ers. I don't know which is worse me being thought of as a *%$#er for using my driving lamps or the car i drive looking like stupid ugly frog, oh vanity, it'll be the death of me.

Someone has done a 993 headlamp conversion to theirs and it looks really good, of course it's in the USA where they can afford to do those sorts of cosmetic conversions and think nothing of the cost. http://65.61.16.109/forum/topic.asp?whichpage=2&ARCHIVEVIEW=&TOPIC_ID=1650

I though that was just when you drive with the driving lights AND the headlights on. I know in my 944 that unless it's dark i.e. raining heavy or just murky, I use the driving lights and leave the headlamps down. Do the 968 lights work in the same way, if they do I think you're OK [;)]

like you I'm driving around with sidelights only until its pitch black so that the car does not scare old ladies and children as i'm sat in traffic [:D]

i also experimented doing the driving lights and sidelights thing as well, however have stopped as I hate the people who drive with their foglamps on. being sat in a lower car they dazzle me constantly which is a pain in the ar5e.

the majority of the people driving around with fogs & sidelights on seem to belong to the burberry cap/white trainers/hoop earrings/cheap gold jewellery/tracksuits when not excercising/smoking lambert & butlers/Max Power brigade - which i would prefer not to be associated with :ROFLMAO:

i do like the 993 headlamps conversion, but not at that cost [>:]

looks like its daylight driving only then...

lol! I was reading Porsche & 911 world this morning and considering buying a 968 as I thought they looked really good - having said that i've only ever seen them in daylight.

Ooh - manic frogs!!![:D]

I'll get me coat [;)]

I have to disagree (naturally). For me, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the 968 is one of the best looking cars around. In fact, I think the design was ahead of its time, and just gets better every year. I actually like the car with the lights up too, and certainly looks a lot less froggy than the 928 due to the more integrated look of the lamps, especially around the base.

I wouldn't swap it for anything else!

Doh! sorry Andy - not meant as an insult

BTW - I'm assuming your comment is because you use your driving lights, not because you display any of the traits highlighted above :ROFLMAO:

hahahaha [:D]

Yeah, I tend to use em instead of flipping the headlights up - better fuel economy [;)]. In my defense only the driving lamps are on as, on an S2, they're both in the same lamp so you can't see the side lights

When I came home with the 968 for the first time my 17 year old son said it was one of the most stylish shaped cars he had ever seen. I can tell you that this is praise of the highest order - his respect for the old man went up a couple of points. I rest my case on the shape issue!!

Personally, I have always liked the 924 / 944 / 968 and have owned 2 944s in my time. Certainly I don't think the 968 is anywhere near the ugliest car Porsche have made - just look at the current production models - Cayenne is noted for its ugliness, the 996 shape was criticised when it first came out and from the wrong angles the Boxster isn't the prettiest car in the world - and I own one!

What are you lot on about? Is it a wind-up from the rear-engined, air-cooled crowd? If you didn't like the shape, why did you buy it? I think 99% of the population think the shape of the 968, headlamps up or down, looks brilliant.

I was using the sidelamps, which are in the headlamps and come on when the headlamps are still down plus the driving lamps but i've decided to stop doing that now for fear of upsetting anyone and at least until i get myself rigged out with a burberry cap and trainers [] One thing i noticed today is, that the driving lamps on the 968 are linked to the dip switch and they come on when you switch to high beam.

Well, compared to the 944 it's ugly...

But that's like saying Jeniffer Lopez is ugly compared to Kylie!

I would have to agree though. I like a lot of the styling details of the 968 but the 944 is more of a cohesive design package.

The 968 was Porsches way of trying to give the 944 a corporate look so that it linked in with other cars in the range. They still haven't learnt from their mistakes "I know, lets take the front from a 996 Turbo, stick it on the front of a VW Towrag and call it a KN!"

LOL not one of the design teams better decisions :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I am a little embarassed that I miss quoted them. What was actually said was:-

"Ah, Ich nien Hanns, vat ve vill do ist ve vill getten das shwoopennosegrillen of das neun neun sex turboboosten unt ve vill shticken im on der fronten of das grossenugly Tow Rag in das auto park unt it vill be das biggenjoken.

LOL

I actually like the Cayenne. Not because it looks nice (but it isn't that bad - seen a Ssang Yong Lusso?) but because the Turbo defies the laws of physics.
