I am not dead yet!!

Going on from another thread in here, where the conversation had moved from the original topic, to talking on the subject of my health, me being on or off the tools and what is happening in the future, I thought it worth just letting people know the score.

In short, so you don't have to read too much, I did damage my knee during the Nurburgring 24 hour, had an op, complications set in over the course of the next couple of months, I was given less than a 20% chance of survival and spent a few weeks in hospital and am recovering now... On medication for the next 5 months, am part time at work at the moment, will be full time within the next couple of weeks.

Yes, the chaps at work (JMG) have been run ragged and been trying to hold things together.. So its been a bit crap there, both for them and customers at times, sorry for that.

Yes, there are going to be some far reaching changes at JMG, which will result in me being more "hands on the tools", less of me in the offices, less stress in my life, more specialization in what we enjoy, less focus on pleasing everyone and only managing it some of the time, and more focus on pleasing a smaller group of customers all of the time. Almost kicking the bucket kind of changes your outlook.

As part of these changes I will be getting rid of most of my cars, just keeping one Porsche for the road and one for the track, one or both will be a 944 turbo or turbos of course )

Further to my (now deleted) thread on TIPEC Jon, I hope that you feel better soon and wish you a speedy recovery.

Didn't know you were not well John. I hope you go on to make a full and speedy recovery. On the subject of stress, business etc I have a mate who built his business up and then decided that what he really enjoyed was being on the tools and not on a computer doing the admin. So he sold up and started again in a small unit and worked by himself. he said the quality of his life increased 10 fold as he was happy with what he was doing. I'm not suggesting you do that but you should do what makes you personally happy and not what everyone else says you should do.

Hey Simon, I have no idea what thread??

Colin, quality of life is important, and in business it is too easy to get sucked into chasing expansion and empire building, but to be honest, it does not make you happy,,, So my plan is to spend more time in the workshop, less in an office, have less customers but give them more attention.. If that does not work financially, then you will be able to find me in Africa doing some engineering work for Oxfam or something. (they will have the fastest LandCruisers in the world though)

I posted 'get well soon', but someone has deleted my thread and not had the courtesy to send me a message and explain why. I only posted on Tipec because Pedro told me here, so a further post about it seemed unnecessary.

I think maybe someone thought I was dead! - There were apparently rumours of this, which were of course highly exaggerated )

Hi Jon , I do not know you personally . May I wish you a speedy recovery and I knew people came back from the dead !

May I ask Jon ? Did you have a personal injury insurance to cover you in the event of something like this happening ?

May I wish you luck in future business and must say you have always had a good reputation on this site ?

Best wishes JC

Pleased to hear that you're on the mend, Jon. I nearly shuffled off once and you're right, it does rearrange your priorities a bit [:)]

Welcome back Jon. Had heard about the knee, but not the ensuing complications. Here's to happier days ahead.

If you end up thinking of selling your C-reg 944 turbo (the white one), let me know.

JC: I have a whole collection of policies which various peddlers have sold me over the years, and somewhere there are injury one or ones, I need to check, but I do have a funny story about something similar...

.. While in hospital, I was classed as critically ill. When I got out, I called my bank to ask about the insurances I have with them, and they were happy to tell me that one of my old life insurance policies also pays out for critical illness, so I called Scottish Widows to make a claim and was told that to claim on the critical illness policy, you have to actually make the claim while still critically ill.. not after recovering from being critically ill... ho hum!!

Glenn: Its a bit of a life changer for sure, getting close to the grim reaper.

Ewan: Been thinking about it regarding the white 86. I know I want at least one 944 turbo in my life, but it may well be a track one, and it would be a shame to track the white one as its so good. I would rather set up one of the others as a "TrackSlag", besides I think she has done 600 miles this year and only 2000 miles in the last 4 years! pop me an email and make an offer, I can only say no )

Thanks chaps

Glad to see you back Jon and I'm pleased to see you're on the right side of what happened.

Wishing you well and happiness at all times [:)]

Jon, I work for a major reinsurer in the market you have made reference to above. I probably know as much about the CI cover as you do about Porsches. Quite honestly the summary provided above is totally inaccurate. I would be happy to talk directly to you to explain anything you need clarification with or even advice on how to submit claim if necessary.

PM me with your telephone number if you want me to call you.

Meanwhile, I am glad to hear you are making progress. Best wishes.

Jon,
Good to hear you're on the mend. You need some sun and a break - you could drive back from Greece ;-)

Thanks Jim. It was a thread, so I suppose that it has been amalgamated into the thread I hadnt seen in an area that I wasnt familiar with! [:D]

Christ, Jon, what a few years!

Let's hope you can use this to spend more time doing what you enjoy. Even if that is trying to keep old 944s on the road for owners who want to spend peanuts. [&:]

My wife who knows more than me on CI says you need to go back to your bank/SW and have a firm discussion on your point above. Don't get fobbed off.

Stay well.

Exactly. Rather obviously, a policy which requires that you claim whilst critically ill is about as much use as a chocolate teapot. I suspect that it is a poorly trained call centre employee though, as opposed to sharp practice by the company.

Oooh, I will be making a couple of calls in the morning!

I presumed it was something to do with critical illness only paying out because you may or may not be on the road to death which the policy also paid out for and as I was no longer critically ill I did not deserve the payment. But I did think it was odd.

I will chase them up.

Yes Paul, the last 3 years have been pretty cursed, two members of the family passed away 3 years ago, last year I was away from work for a short period from a back problem which exposed that in my younger years I had broken my back (!) and this year there has been this... Hopefully that is the end of it, but it's why I am now firmly of the opinion that you need to live for today and make sure its a positive experience for all involved or not happen at all, and that includes work!

David, Greece, it took me a moment to think what you were on about, are you trying to tempt me over to the dark side, it is tempting though!

Thanks chaps for all the good wishes
