I wish i hadn't asked....

Over the years I have become pretty convinced that the running costs vary very little between the S2/turbo/968 and the various incarnations of 911. The only real big hitters seem to be the special 911's such as turbo's etc. and of course a bad 928 or a rusty torsion bar 911 can be a huge money pit.

The amounts charged by Baz Hartech on their warranty / service plan back me up on this.

Still though for most saving up £20K+ to buy a car is a tough task in the first place.

I can certainly say that judging from the running costs of my Focus the 944T compares admirably, so i'd say that decent ones are comparable in running costs to an average family hatchback.

The problem with Ford (and probably most manufacturers these days) is that they engineer their parts to cost more - a mate of mine with a Mondy needed some rear axel bushes replacing - but of course the bushes are bonded onto the axel so it needed a new axel. Total bill in the end was the thick end of £2k all to replace a couple of blocks of rubber!! Very cynical strategy by Ford. Also a set of ARB bushes for my focus is £125 per side vs. £16 per side for the 944T.

Exactly. I can safely say that, if you take a modern Legacy through a car wash ( the missus, not me [&o]), and it takes the roof spoiler off, it'll be £650 plus fitting []. That's the price of a 944 clutch, which we warn about in every buyer's guide. They are not expensive cars to run, but the price to buy does set expectations too low.
