Idle Issue

ORIGINAL: robwright I wouldn't say resistance would be the most reliable way of checking it. It is a magnetic pick up sensor. The best way to test these is an oscilloscope. In the absence of one of those it might be best to swap it [:)]
Let me have a quick look in my oscilloscope drawer.....oh damn, its empty again. Let's swap instead![:D]

I would have thought that the sensor was an inductance circuit and the teeth on the flywheel cause fluctuations as they pass by the sensor from the natural magnetic properties that all ferrous metals have? It is the inductance circuit in the sensor that is being tested for resistance.

Andy and Rob why dont you come over mine this week and put the car in the workshop and use the parts i have on the shelf so you can sytematically work your way through the problem. Plenty of sensors on the shelf and S2 AFM, idle control valves etc. Elliot

Elliot that's a great offer mate and makes good sense for everyone lol. I have no problem with doing that. Obviously it's down to Andy though being his car.

Wow, top offer Elliot, thank you. My only issue will be what time I can get to you due to work but would like to take you up on that [;)]

Went for a drive tonight (that's what happens when you're single on valentines day[:D]) and the idle issue wasn't bad at all. Very slight drop in rpm and a little bit of hunting before settling but didn't drop much below about 7-800 rpm. Maybe because it's colder tonight? May just have to test it again tomorrow![;)]

probably fault with one of the following AFM vacuum system air leak Aux air valve engine temperature sensor thermo-time switch congrats on your new purchase . She looks great .

Cheers Nick Some of this has been checked/replaced lately although will be checking it all out over the next few days and see if can get it sorted [;)]

Top offer there from Elliot. I wish there was someone as helpful, with as well stocked a workshop, near to me. Hope you get to the bottom of the problem HA. Is it relevant that the problem seems to be going away with a good drive? Oli.

Andy i can open the workshop on saturday afternoon if you guys want to come over. I have to train my sons football team until 12 so cant make morning. cheers

Oli - the thought had already been crossing my mind! It's still not perfect though and given Andrew had mentioned an idle problem and there's an invoice from the owner before him I guess there is still an underlying problem present Elliot, I can't make Saturday, it's my Dad's 70th Birthday so heading down to Oxford for the day. Will have to be another time Paul - a bush trimmer, I'll have to remember that![:D]

Not a hard one to test, if you see what I mean ... It would take a tank of super plus unleaded, and a good alarm clock to wake you up nice and early. And a decent route planned, and a pack of sandwiches and flask of coffee. And yes, I am serious. Oli.

It does seem more and more that you may be right Oli. I've driven the car every evening except yesterday and it's near perfect aside from a bit of a 'blip' tonight. Just needs some use I reckon [;)]

Sounds like you may be along the right lines then ... Needs some use. If you want a hand with that then I am sure there is a while forum of people happy to help you out! [:D] Oli.
