In Car HI FI ... recommendations please?

Since I asked a few questions here just thought I would give an update.

Recently fitted a Becker Indianapolis Pro and after a delay because there where none in stock, fitted the Becker Ipod connector. Today had a chance to test it with a friends Itouch and was pleased to see that it worked perfectly, immediately started charging the Itouch. All tunes, albums and artists displayed correctly.

According to the instruction book the connector I have will work with Ipod 3rd,4th and 5th generation also with the Ipod mini and the Ipod photo.

Now that I know it works I will get an Itouch

I have been looking at the Indianapolis to replace the very modern looking Alpine head fitted to my C2S. I need to decide if it is a DIY job or best left to the experts. Did you fit the Indianapolis yourself? Any pointers would be gratefully received.

Any advice welcomed!

Pair of RSRs and a nice fast tunnel - music to one's ears! [:D] I can't remember when I last turned the "wireless" on in my car.

Seriously, good luck with sorting your sounds out [8D]

No I did not fit it myself. The previous owner who installed the Alpine had made a bit of a dogs breakfast of it, although all original speaker wiring was intact, and I wanted this fixed. If all was in order I think it would be a relatively easy job as DIY but I felt that for very little extra cost, it was worth getting a professional to do it.

So had my local guy fit which he did within the price of the Indianapolis plus £50 for the tidy up work. I could probably have got the set a little cheaper but it seemed to be a swings and roundabouts situation.

The GPS aerial is fitted under the centre of the dashboard, he removed the centre vent and it went in easy but he had to lead the wire across to the left side and then back to the radio. But he said it was no real broblem. The exising plugs all went into the radio without problems. GPS signal reception is fine.

The Ipod connector was done a few weeks later and was a 30 minute job. Works exactly as it says on the tin. The Ipod connector is routed into the glove box so nothing is on view.

I have not changed the amplifier (Nokia) or speakers as yet, as wanted to get the radio working correcting first. Most people on here say the amp and speakers are rubbish. Probaly correct. For me it is the aerial and although the aerial amplifier is all connected the quality of reception varies when on the road on some occasions seems to be directional. There seems to be no solution to this.

The hands free works great. The phone rings the radio cuts out and I say hello nothing else to do. One button to press to end the call. More difficult if you wanted to ring out when on the move and there is no phone directory option although a limited number of last dialled in/out calls are retained.

Will improve as I learn more about the system.

On balance I am well pleased my new system and it looks exactly right in the dashboard.

Thanks for your detailed answer. I agree that for £50 it does not seem to be worth the hassle to fit it myself.

I had a Becker Grand Prix fited by Stirling ICE in Southampton. Maybe a trek from where you are but hey did a great job - really neat and attentive to detail. Had the iPod lead run into the back of the glove box.

Just fitted an Alpine iDA-X200. Really impressed and looks pretty good in the dash. The iPod connectivity is excellent and the sound quality very good. Does not come with a CD deck which is ok with me as everything on the pod...
