Induction kits

ORIGINAL: tony stokes

Thanks for the advice so far.The units I am looking at are the high.
flow induction kit from Porscheshop or the Evo-v flow induction system.Surely someone must have one of these on their cars?
Tony

They are quite a discerning bunch on here you know. [;)]

Induction kits are a waste of money on a boxster. Look at the cayman and the boxster and its obvious that the extra HP in the cayman doesnt require any reworking of the air filter or intake, its all been done in the inlet manifold and throttle body. If you want more noise , just remove the foam as toolpants suggests, buying an oiled filter can lead to more issues if it contaminates the MAF and will probably invalidate any warranty or engine claim. The supposed dyno gains banded about on other forums are within the measurement variation of the equipment.

Hi Tony

As someone who has fitted the Porscheshop Induction Kit + Trueflow Air filter to my 986 2.5, I can tell you what the effects are:

Amazing ! The sound impact is better than expected. Unlike most "cheaper" induction kits, where all you seem to get is a lot of rushing air noise, with the induction kit you get more noise but its is more tonal with a screaming high end. It is as if the engine behind you has been put a lost closer to you and has been destricted. You can really hear it work and it does feel like you are driving a race engine. My whole way of driving changed - a lot more revs just to hear it wailing behind me.

As for the power increase, there is no doubt you will gain top end power. This manifests itself in that the engine seems to hold on to its power further up the revs, and seems more flowing. Its not huge, but definitely noticeable. As for then Trueflow air filter, this I think gives the power hike and works well. As for oily MAF's, well do what I did, every service as a precaution I would remove and clean. However if you ensure you never over oil the air filter (use absorbent kitchen towels on the filter) should not be a problem and I certainly never experienced it.

I never De-snorkled as I did not want debris brought into the engine bay and also I believe water can more easily come into contact with the air filter and all you get is more rushing air noise doing this. The true flow kit adds tonal sound due to the tube being a different dimension to the origininal and the removal of the resonating chamber in the original.

The installation is not too difficult - if you can change the air filter in a Boxster than you can fit this - its just removing the clamps on the original which just pulls away.

I have removed my induction kit, (& Ottele sports exhaust) as I am selling car on . If you are interested make me an offer !

I've had performane air intakes on other cars, all it managed to do was give a weak mixture and make the engine run hotter after extended periods of full throttle at high speed. Granted the initial throttle response feels more immediate but as to extra power , the gains do not seem to be substantiated by the dyno / rolling road. The ECU can make some adjustment for extra fuelling based on more air (typically 5-10%) but it will only be of benefit if the engine can actually draw in that air and use it. Since the engine is not forced induction , there is no real way of getting much more air in the cylinder as the air is being drawn rather than forced . I'm therefore sceptical that the gains can be anything more than the additional sound afforded by removing baffling. The 2.5 may well see a partial benefit as it is not a variocam engine and has a different induction system to the S model. The exhaust and manifold modifications are likely to make the most difference to real performance as these are recognised as being far from optimised on all models especially the 2.5 and 2.7 versions. The agreed consesus seems to be you need to adjust the cam or ignition timing / fuelling to get a benefit from an air filter modification. I dont think spending a few hundred pounds for an induction kit is going to be worth the money if a simple mod to the filter element can achieve the same sound. If the hardware goofy has for sale will fit your car then perhaps its worth a punt if the price is right.

As indicated by the last poster, it was always my understanding that induction without re-chipping was unlikely to be worthwhile. Bear in mind that for those of us with the 2.5 or 2.7 the upgrade path created by Porsche marketing is to 3.2 or 3.4 S for more noise and power.

I'd be wary about the effect on any warranty.

Don't forget to notify your insurer to get your premium loaded too...

Hi

All I can say is that from experience & research the Trueflow + Airfilter WILL give you a power hike.
I had a similar cone type filter and induction kit fitted on a previous VR6, dyno'd it, and I got more than +11 bhp, although furter up the rev range.
The air filter basically allows air to flow in easier - put an engine on a Dyno without an air filter and it will give more BHP. On the 2.5 it will give more power, but further up the revs. As the engine is not going to completely be without an air filter, and won't rev a great deal more than normal (we're not talking radical change here) , there is no risk of running lean. The ECU it self will adjust as all air flow passes through the MAF. Unless you change cams and allow to rev higher does fuelling become an issue. I removed my spark plugs when running with the kit and they were normal brown colour - not grey to ligth grey as per lean mixture. Temp gauge never lifted more than normal - even around Brand's Hatch Track day. BTW a reputable indie told me to keep it on until after the track day as it would help !!

The reason mods to 2.5 are usually frowned upon is because of the low down torque - or lack of it. Hence when you destrict air in and air out (through sports exhausts, merged manifolds), you usually loose bottom end torque. That's why Porsche went 2.7, 3.2, 3.4..... These you can keep destricting as the cubic inches make up for low down torque !!
