Instrument Cluster

I have a purely cosmetic issue with the Instrument Cluster - best shown in the embedded picture. The pixellation on the Instrument Cluster only affects the central LCD display under the rev counter (and not the other two LCD displays).

Porsche has quoted me £1,900 to replace the Instrument Cluster. Absolutely ridiculous! I spoke to www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk and I think they said it would be about £300 + VAT to get a new Instrument Cluster. Again, this is pretty pricey given its a minor cosmetic issue. They did mention that the unit is currently manufactured by VDL only (I think? or maybe VDU?) and that generic suppliers should come on to the market in a couple of months - which should see lower prices.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to the best way to cure the issue with the Instrument Cluster? Given it is purely a minor cosmetic issue, I wouldn't want to spend too much on fixing.

I have placed a request for a Boxster Instrument Cluster on an online breakers yard but don't know how much joy I'll have there....
 
That's the first one I have seen do that on the 987. I have seen a few broken Air Con control panels on the 986 but this is a first.

I am not surprised at the part cost but the repair place maybe able to swap out the centre panel for you. If you swap out the complete cluster with a second hand one you will have issues with the displayed mileage. Some on-line, slightly dubious websites offer a resting service but a word of warning the mileage may be reset, but you then have to get the true mileage into it and that requires a dealer with a computer and they may not plan ball with you. It is technically possible though. I can do this but a dealer will still know the donor cluster is not the original as there is a real time clock that is set by Porsche in a number of computers throughout the car and typically the clocks should be the same. However, the new cluster will be somewhat different. The clocks get verified every time the dealer puts the computer on the car.

Your best bet is to see if the cluster can be repaired or failing that see if the dealer will at least transfer the mileage to a 'new reset' cluster, that way the mileage/car won't look 'clocked'.
 
Elliot, if it's any use it's almost certainly VDO that make the cluster. It might be worth talking to them you never know. For their website, click here.

I can't say for sure if this cluster would work in your car without verifying it against the VIN of your car nor can I vouch for the sellers provenance. However, it would appear to be a new cluster. It would still require your dealers cooperation ie You provide the part and he changes and codes it for you. A new cluster can be programmed by a dealer and the verified mileage transferred. From what I can check on the part number 987641117 05 D07 was superseded by 987641117 32 D07 and is a 6 speed manual GB cluster.
 
cheers. looks like it could work.
however, i think it's probably too pricey given the current instrument cluster functions fine and only has cosmetic damage on the LCD unit.
wish there was a way to repair just the LCD part rather than replace the entire instrument cluster!
