Insurance Boxster

Been reading views regarding insurance cover but would like some further input. Could someone give me some indication as to premiums as I am new to owning a Porsche. The previous car I had I just paid an up dated rate with Direct Line £156 plus the original £260, but it is now coming up for renewal. The new premium for staying with them is £ 573.
At no time was I asked about any mods other than what came with the car from the factory.
So is the Direct Line deal any good?
ps my other car Golf GTI TDI is also with D Line.

The problem with comparing insurance prices is that there are so many factors to take into account (age, driving experience, area in which you live etc etc) but I renewed my Boxster insurance yesterday so this what it cost me:
I'm 44, clean license, car garaged and live in rural Northumberland and have full NCD and I paid £375. Incidentely, my existing insurer wanted to charge me £475 so a quick bit of searching on the internet saved me £100.

RichPam - I was struggling a few months ago to get my quote down and I found all the specialist companies (even the ones that advertise in the club mag etc) are a complete waste of time - they are probably better suited to owners of older classic models.
I found the everday companies like D line and Admiral etc were the cheapest.
Try wacking up your voluntary excess and limiting your mileage to get your premium down - oh and another sneaky trick - I've put my retired 65 year old father on the policy as a named driver - for some reason this reduced the premium by £100?!

As stated before, Admiral will not insure your car for anything other than the value of the base car. Any extras are charged for (and not insured), and if you don't declare them you run the risk of invalidating the insurance.

Haven't bought my Porsche yet but I got a web quote from Privilege (same company as Direct Line) a few months back and they implied they wouldn't insure me in a Boxster unless the car had a tracker fitted. I am coming up 44 and have full NCD. Car would be garaged every night. I'm looking at a 2004 Boxster S 986 or Carrera Cabrio 996 and very few seem to have trackers already. I'm guessing that if I have to ask the dealer to get a tracker fitted, it going to cost me a packet.

Hockey shooter - I would call round some more companies if I was you - if everything is as you say (and you don't live in Baghdad) then I don't see why you should have any problems. I don't have a tracker and I bet half of the owners on here don't either!

It could just be down to their online widget being stubborn. If I talk to a real human, I might get a different story. Of course, these days actually being allowed to talk to a real human it quite an achievement!

After my similar post the other day I ended up going with A-plan at the weekend, I am 33, Ex company car driver for 10 years (no claims), clean licence, living in a reasonable suburb of bristol, car parked on driveway off private road, tracker fitted, unlimited mileage including business use and also covering Girlfriend and father for social. £750.

Interestingly adding my 65 yo father actually increased the premium by £100 ( initially they weren't too happy about covering him, but I think that was down to occupation).

I was deliberating on the tracker front as it only saves £45 and I am not convinced I would want the car back if it got knicked!

The thing that put me off the majority of the direct insurers was the whole base car thing, I've bought and paid for a car with a lot of extras and the last thing I want is for an insurance co to turn around and say sorry we'll only give you the cost of a comparable age basic car should the worst happen - that and depriciation combined would really wipe the smile off my face.

Worst bit about Porsche ownership so far is the fact that I have to wait until I get back from Holiday at the end of the month to pick the car up from the dealership (didn't want to tempt fate by leaving it on the driveway)

Before long they'll take that one step further so that when your Carrera Turbo goes walkies, they replace it with a Boxster saying "well, its nearly the same car, isn't it?". Car insurance==Legallised fraud.

Each year I call around for quotes as there are massive differences between insurance companies. If you need insurance now then ring Liverpool Victoria as they smashed all the other quotes I received by at least £150!!.

I have to agree with Tony, I've just Insured my 06 Boxster S with LV, it cost me £405, I'm 54, I've full no claims, park it on the drive, I chose the Guarenteed Protected NCB.

LV were £100 cheaper than the best matching quote

AA underwritten by Saga FNCB 60% £200 XS £240inc 60+ garaged 6K miles per yr It is the same old story shop around

Its strange to read that LV are once more very competitive for some. My boxster was insured with them a couple of years ago (they were recommended by many on the forum about 4 yrs back) but then they really started going up in price so I shopped around. Agree that the specialist insurers that advertise in the mags don't always look so competitive.

Think the argument about some insurers not covering 'extras' is a bit of a white elephant once you are insuring a 7 year old boxster like mine. If its written off they'll offer me the lowest amount they can get away with regardless of whether it has the upgraded sound system or not?

Tracker I have but many insurers are really not that bothered (think Priviledge as stated above is one of the exceptions)

cheers

No, its a very real problem.
You are forgetting that if you declare the options (as you should), people like Admiral will then load the premium, per option.
If you don't declare the options, and something happens, you may well find you are uninsured []

On advice, I tried a couple of online quotes from LV and got, for 2004-reg, 8000 miles p/a and garaged:

986 Boxster S - £520
996 Carrera Cab - £920

...both with NCD protection. Boxter price not bad but I nearly fell off my chair for the 911!

Thanks folks,
Chris.

Interested by peoples views on LV as once I got through to a human being and explained the situation I ended with a quote of £1400, and I couldn't get a straight answer on what they would pay out based on if I did end up claiming.

On that basis I gave them a wide berth.

I get the feeling that when dealing with the big insurers it is all down to who you speak to if and when you get through to a human as to what you end up being quoted, especially if you aren't asking for a quote on a bog standard family car

And even if you do speak to a human, its worth squat unless you get it in writing!

Interested to read about LV: I was with them (have been for years) but this time Elephant were a clear £100 cheaper. However, beware that if you decide to pay by Direct Debit, Elephant increase your base premium - in my case by about £40 and without telling me - and thats before they add credit charges etc. I only discovered that the quoted £375 had risen to £475 when the paperwork arrived. Needless to say, I decided to dispense with Direct Debit and pay in a lump. Sneaky practise and I wonder how many other insurers do the same thing.

Hello all - Thank you for the information regarding Insurance for my said car I have finally got it sorted. I have gone with AIG as they also gave me fully comp when travelling in Europe, which most other companies were TPFT.
All car covered as from the factory speck.
I can also change the ins to cover track days at extra cost.
The car is also fitted with a Thatcham system which was a condition of Insurance.
The Ins premium was £275. With three years no claims and one speeding ticket.
p s We are both sixty so maybe that is why the premium is low & living in a good post code area.

Just to add a bit to this thread - have bought my Boxster today (well, have paid the deposit!) and have been ringing a few insurers again.

Porsche's own insurance (underwritten by Norwich Union I believe) was quite expensive at £740, but adding a second driver dropped the price by £140. And it includes two track days a year.

lv.com (cheaper online than by phone) was around £540.

Apparently, the business about not covering options stems from a change by the motor trade itself not factoring the majority of options when considering used cars - only an auto box really counts for anything. The insurance business have picked up on this.

A way of fighting back is a scheme underwritten by Axa whereby for a single payment at time of purchase, they will pay the difference between what the insurers decide to cough up, and the original purchase price, for up to three years, should the car be stolen (and not recovered) or otherwise written off. Sounds interesting, but on the other hand, isn't this what insurances are for in the first place?! With schemes like this - and no claims discount 'protection' - you end up having to insure at least twice.

Chris.
