Insurance - who do you use?

There are so many options really, but to add my current insurance to the mix....

Chaucer, 38 yr old, 10000mls inc commuting, garaged, Fully Comp, no frills or glossy paperwork (not that I care about that I just want my car insured!), £250 excess, £2500 agreed value, insured via sureterm... £294.

Was upgraded from when I had the 924S which was only £190 for a similar deal with a £1700 agreed value

ok, here goes for my first post...

I'm currently sitting on the fence about buying a 944. The insurance quotes are horrific beyond belief... Looking at ~£1500 a year!

Problem is that I've got a shiny new UK drivers licence. I'm unfortunately on the wrong side of 40, with over 20 years of driving with no insurance claims ever. However that was in Canada. It's also been several years since I owned a car. So most of my friends are saying I'll just have to bite the bullet for a couple of years until I get some no claims bonus here. Things are exacerbated by having to park on the road:-(

Anyone have any suggestions? I've been checking out the online insurance sites. Would finding a good broker be more likely to produce some reasonable prices?

PS: probably going to go with a 944 despite the insurance. The quotes don't vary much no matter what car I enquire about... Except the 993 was a *lot* more.

Hmm, maybe try some of the more specialist places, Mannings I've heard good things about. I think Classicline is another. Speaker to a person and explaining you have been driving for possibly longer than they have lived might help [:D]

Just renewed my insurance, was quoted £180 to stay with Lancaster, but then got a call from 2gether insurance (no I'd never heard of them either), but they quoted me £105 fully comp, £100 excess, 3,000 miles per year and agreed valuation. When I got the paperwork it said that the policy was underwritten by KGM @ Lloyds I think.

Anyone else used them or heard of them? They're based in Wisbech, Cambs.

I, too, found Classic Line about the best cover/price for my 44.
Central London, garaged but not at home address, agreed value, 7500 miles, 2 drivers.............a smidge over £300.
Admittedly, having been born in 1949, I did get "Old Fart Rates"!

Classic Line sound promising, but I can't get them to phone me back! I'll keep trying, but they only have another few days until my renewal date. If I can't get a quote from them I'll be sticking with my current insurer.

Ian, try Haggerty they are a US insurer and specialise in expats! they should take your previous history into account

Cancelled my renewal this morning with Adrian Flux (£236.00) and took out my years cover with RH for £129.15

5000 miles per year
Agreed value
Modifications (cosmetic)
Cherished salvage

Very happy and would recommend on the telephone service received so far.

Cheers

We use RH for both our Porsches on agreed valuation. Also our Citroen is insured with them. We used their breakdown recovery once on the Citroen and it was a fast and first class service.

Thanks for the suggestion. Manning were extremely helpful and provided a good quote. The snag I've now run into is that they need a letter from my Canadian insurance company saying i'd been claim free for 5 years. Having now spoken to my old insurance company I was told that they purge their database of all inactive customers after two years, so they've got no record of me:-( To further compound things, the insurance agent I dealt with is no longer there.

So it looks like I may need to just bite the bullet and pay exorbitant premiums for a year or two.

Just phoned ClassicLine for a quote on a 944 S2, garaged in leafy Hertfordshire and limited to 3000 miles per year. I'm in my late 30's and have just one SP30 which expires next year.

They wanted £537! I thought they were supposed to be cheap? That's more than the quotes I'm getting on Confused.com

why use Classic when RH will cover you for about a third of the cost ? ???????

RH £125.00 FC cover limited 5000 miles for a 89 944S2

I am using Carole Nash and paying 350 a year, fully comp with 0 years of no claim as my bonus are used on my other car.

RH are struggling to provide me a decent quote. They've gone to "talk to their underwriters"

Its amazing everyone is so different.
RH was recommended to me but they couldn't do commuting on their policies and the one they found with it was expensive.
Sureterm appeared to give a really good quote online but when I rang again there were a few issues that once remedied pushed it up high.
In the end I managed to knock £80 off last year renuing A plan.
So now 318 for normal policy, no mileage limit, 2 to drive, not garaged etc. 1990 944 T.
Why A plan couldn't offer that in the first place I have no idea!!
But then they never do initially only when you threaten to leave.

maybe my cover is cheap because its my second car ? hadn't thought of that. just assumed most folk wouldn't use their 944 as a daily driver .

If one insurance company was hte cheapest for every single client then there would probably only be three in the world :p , it's just the nature of insurance that different companies will object to or approve of certain things. Wild anomolies re post codes attitudes to points etc are very common. I'll certainly be giving RH a try myself one day , I wish I had known of them earlier.

My own strange one is that my own company Liverpool victoria will insure me on a 996 or a Boxster S for under £300 fully comp with no mileage restriction but wouldnt even insure my 944 turbo !

Mas
