insurance woes

Well, this is so ridiculous it's almost amusing. Just received an insurance renewal quote for the Turbo from Carole Nash. I was more than happy with the £495 I paid last year - only about £10 more than I pay on the 924 - and understandably I couldn't quite believe my eyes when I opened the letter this morning and saw:

"...we have examined a number of policies to find you the most competitive rates and have changed your policy to a new scheme that best suits your needs"

followed by the premium: £2014.38 ; plus the excess is up from £150 to £520.

This policy seems identical in every way, including the 6000 mile limit! I notice the underwriter is now listed as Norwich Union, who in the past have always been the most expensive of the insurers I have contacted.

Tempted as I am, I don't want to turn this into a discussion about why insurers never seem to want to hold on my business for more than a year despite my lack of claims and non-use of vehicle recovery services. I would just really appreciate it if anyone who has insured their 944 recently could let me know the names and numbers of someone who will quote me a sensible price! Clearly I'll be phoning Carole Nash to find out what they have to say for themselves.

Thats crazy, im only paying £1800 as a new driver with out any no claims on my 924. both me and my Dad are with Zenith Insurance, he is paying around £600 on his 993 C2S. They might be worth a try if you're looking at renewing.

Hmmm!
Do I get the impression that some-one doesn't want your business!!
Chris Knott quoted me about £375 this summer for my '85 944 Lux Auto. As I'm 58 I wasn't too happy with that and asked Frizzells/Liverpool Victoria for a quote. Please bear in mind I have been with them for some via the CSMA and they also insure a second car for me. But they quoted £185 - fully comp for my wife and I. No mileage limitation, excess £250.
I do hear from the Titanic Board that they are either not interested or will cancel your insurance with them - 14 days notice, money back pro-rata, if you Md the car. But they seem reasonable just at present for my bog standard 924S.
Ask me again next year in August when I come up for renewal...

Hi Dan

Have you tried Heritage, sister company to Chris Knott for limited mileage only.

I paid £371.00 limited to 5,000 miles, I think it was only another £80 to put it upto 7,500 miles a year.

May be worth a try 0121-246 5050

Let me know how you get on

Cheers

Lee

I found Direct Choice to find the cheapest for me by quite a long way on my S2, with a standard policy - fully comp, estimated mileage 12000 pa, no modifications. Worth giving them a try.

Call them up on Monday Dan and find out why.

They could just be chancing their arm and relying on 'renewal inertia' for you just to renew. I used to work in the insurance industry and it is a common practice to hike the price each year because even in this day and age it is only a low percentage of people who shop around for a better deal []

They will possibly amend it straight back to a more reasonable figure.

The other possibility is they have just made a cock up [:-]

Okay, well here are the results so far:

Carole Nash - despite my renewal quote being four times as expensive as my current policy, they are adamant that they can go no cheaper. Apparently this is because my current underwriter, AXA, no longer offers cover on 944s.

Direct Choice - they've quoted via Norwich Union too, but are asking for even more: £2679!

Adrian Flux - already insure my 924 with them; better, at £705 with 6k limit, but still 40% more than I'm currently paying.

Heritage - £683 with 5k limit.

Privilege - £1254

Liverpool Victoria - apparently at 27yrs old I'm still too young to insure a 944T with them; 30 is the lower age limit.

First Alternative - again I'm too young to insure a 944T with them.

Tesco - £1615

Churchill - £1631

Zenith - £2450

Allianz Cornhill.......drumroll...... £3176!

RH Specialist - over 30s only for a 944T

Lancaster - £760.80

Still waiting for a couple of others to get back to me. Thank you all for your suggestions, they are greatly appreciated. This is such fun! [:'(]

Dan,
Had the same problem with Carole Nash. AXA are pulling out of the 'classic' market altogether so C.N. are no longer competitive on older cars. Try Admiral / Elephant / Bell Direct (all the same company but curiously slightly different quotes), they actually beat C.N.'s quote from the previous year for more miles and better cover. I was pleasantly surprised !

Jamie
ps I'm 28 as well, so age is not such an issue for these guys.

I had exactly the same problem with Carole Nash on my 911.

I have just taken out insurance with ClassicLine, give them a try on 01455 639000.

They were the cheapest by far, with the lowest excess too.

I've just switched to First Alternative - their quote of £540 beat my Privilege renewal quote by £200 [:)]

I didn't think this was bad as the car (1995 968) is kept on the street in a city location. I do have 8 years NCB and a clean licence though.

Sorry to hear about all the trouble your having Dan, I'm with Carole Nash at the mo, my policy is underwritten by AXA too and I paid about the same as you earlier this year. Looks like I'll be doing the same run around come renewal time too then[].

Very frustrating though, it took me long enough to find somewhere that offered a decent policy and a resonable price and I thought I'd found a good un with CN. I'm 25 so there weren't many companies already who would even take my money[&:] It's really annoying to read all the "classic" or "Porsche" insurance adverts in the back of magazines offering great prices and discounts, with no sign of age restriction, only to spend 15 minutes on hold to be told you need to be 5 years older.

If you do find a good deal let me know.

Rich

Crikey Dan, it sounds like you are having a rough time getting a decent quote. To give a bit more detail, the policy that Direct Choice found for me was with Kinetic. I'm 25 and the premium was just under £900, which seemed quite reasonable compared to the other quotes I recieved, although none of them was over £2k.

£900 is still a hell of a lot of money to pay out compared to the £500 I (we) paid out for this year. I was looking forward to maybe an even cheaper premium next year too[]

Too right! Rich, I've updated my earlier message so you can see how I'm getting on with quotes - not too hot at present [:(]. But I shall persevere!

Dan

One of my mates, who runs a 996, recommended this site to save going back through all of you details with each company - may be worth a go just to see what comes up ?

Yeah, all things are relative though. Some of the other quotes were truely scary - in the same fantasy realm of the £2k quotes you've got.

All paid up now so I'm no longer thinking about it [:'(].

You have my sympathy with this outrageous situation. I had this happen to me once and when I confronted my broker with my own quotes at less than half they were offering for renewal they dropped their price.

I declined and said I took a dim view of their business practice. If I ran my business like this I am sure I wouldn't survive long.

Anyway, I have been with RH Specialist Car Division for a few years on a 5000 mile policy for £404.25 ( Underwritten by Equity Red Star) Phone 01277 206912.

Good luck

Right, it seems we have a winner:

I phoned Lancaster, whom I used to use a couple of years back. They initially quoted me £761 but I didn't sound too impressed and pointed out that it would be good to be able to afford to return to them as I always thought their service levels were fantastic (e.g. when my main waterpump hose burst in the middle of the Black Forest on a German bank holiday and their translator sweet-talked Baden-Baden OPC into opening just for me - took a few hours, but I still made my 9pm ferry from Calais!).

Anyway, she went off to talk to her supervisor and gave me £80 off for being a returning customer, plus the same again for agreeing to a raised excess. Final price: £601.

THIS IS PROBABLY TO LATE LOOKING WHEN YOU SENT YOUR MESSAGE BUT I HAVE JUST JOINED PCGB.THE BEST QUOTE I GOT WAS FROM NORWICH UNION DIRECT ON THE NET.I WENT ON THE NET EVERY WEEK AND PUT IN MY DETAILS WITH NORWICH UNION AND GOT A DIFFERENT QUOTE EVERYTIME! YOU ARE RIGHT THOUGH-THE 1ST YEAR IS CHEAP THEN THE 2ND YEAR IT GREATLY INCREASES.HOPE YOU HAVE FOUND A GOOD DEAL.LINS
