Just had my renewal notice through from Direct line

> premium £703
> No claims protection £120
> Legal protection £17.95
> Direct line rescue £90.30

> Total £932.40

OK, so I went onto the direct line website and got a brand new quote keeping my details and cover exactly the same

> premium £660
> NC protection £110
> Legal protection £17.85
> Rescue £79.80

> Total £ 867.65

£65 in my pocket rather than Direct lines, thank you very much!

have you looked at Esure or their new offspring First Alternative(?) they were cheaper than the rest last time I looked

Ive just renewed thro Elephant
I tried liverpool victoria but, they do not insure any cars at all with above standard parts except alloys, sunroof or disability aids, not even gen porsche parts
Also they dont cover trackdays from now

From recent experience I'd be very careful about companies like Esure and Direct line. The trend with these 'cheaper' companies is that their 'modifications' clause sneakily deems all optional extras (except metallic paint strangely enough) as modifications and excludes them from the cover. If you specifically inform them about optional items they hike the premium up but still refuse to cover the items, their reasoning being that they don't cover modifications and these 'modifications' make the car more of a theft risk. [8|]
I had this trouble with Admiral and seem to recall finding both of the companies mentioned above to have the same type of clause. I eventually took a policy with AXA who had no such sneaky clause and was about the same cost as those unsuitable policies anyway. It may not seem a big deal except that this type of clause means you will not be reimbursed for things like optional alloys, aircon, leather or any other manufacturer supplied option in the case of a total loss, which on the average boxster is probably an extra 3 or 4 thousand quid loss. If your 18" alloys are stolen, companies like Admiral will happily reimburse you the cost of a set of standard 16" wheels and point to the modifications clause.
The other problem is that the documentation is deliberately vague about this in most cases and you can't get a straight answer from customer services either. With Admiral I got 4 completely different interpretations of their modifications clause, which in itself was enough to make me cancel the policy. Bottom line is that when you're insuring a high spec boxster, don't blindly grab the cheapest insurance option.

I looked at Elephant just over 3 months ago and they had a modifications clause that meant no optional extras were insured.

Thanks for that info.
Any idea if Privilige have any of these type of clauses?

I don't recall I'm afraid. I got all my quotes on the internet and found that each company that had a dodgy modifications clause did mention it as you went through the online quote system. Some were very clear about it when you clicked on their definition of modification, others like Admiral were a bit vague. Initially I was caught out completely having assumed modification meant neon lights and homemade body kits. Luckily they had a specific reference to modified alloys on their cover note that made me enquire further. So if you go through an online quotes system, click on the definition of modification when you're asked about whether or not your car has been modified - you can no longer assume it applies to shell-suited nova owners.

Not read the small print, but Privilege is part of RBSG, like Direct Line and Churchill, in fact Privilege is underwritten by D.L., so I would assume that there is probably some clause to be weary of. I'm happy to be corrected though.

how long is a piece of string?

The boxster is a fairly "mainstream" car these days so shop around all the usual suspects until you get a quote you like - they will all cover it. There are a number of "specialist" insurers for porsche, but I equate "specialist" with "overpriced".

bit of a generalisation Grieg :) I'd prefer to pay a slight premium for service ... have a read of my post in this thread http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=288734

Roger - Try A-Plan .. although they have a bunch of brances ring the Beaconsfield Branch, they specialise in Porsches

A-Plan Insurance
45 Station Road, Beaconsfield, Bucks, HP9 1QG
HP9 1QG

Apart from the first year I had the car, I have always found best quotes from specialist like A. Manning, Academy (my current insurer), A. Flux, etc and at the end of the day they are brokers who use the same mainstream insurers anyway i.e. Norwich Union, NIG, Royal & SunAlliance, etc...

Having said that I also agree with Greig that there is no magic insurer for all Porsche owners; post code lottery, claim history, licence history, and several other factors all play a part and so it is worth getting as many quotes as possible...

I think the only thing some people have warned here is that the likes of Tesco etc will only insure you for the extras you have declared and you should not assume that if it is factory fitted option then it is insured.

depends if you want to track it or not-if you do then manning and other specialists include unlimited trackdays while general like norwich union do not even offer it as extra addon....

Always found Elephant to be cheap if you don't mind paying all the money up front otherwise they wack on a lot of interest if you pay monthly.

I would pay a slight premium for service also, but when getting my latest renewal but my current insurers (Bell Direct) have me fully comp, low excess, protected NCD for 450 quid, all the "specialists" wanted at least twice that amount and given my car avoids the problem of optional extras then they offered me no benefits. I have had problems with specialist brokers before which involved delays in getting paperwork sent out, numerous mistakes on policy documents etc.. I like insurance where I can type in the details myself to ensure there are no mistakes.

Good point .. I like insurance where I can ring some one after an accident and have it all sorted 30 mins later ... A loan car delived at pick up .. My car Repaired .. No Excess payment as it was instantly recovered .. Communication every step .... no arguments.. Also cover notes at 24 hour notice for loan cars and service cars at the dealer when the cars are in at zero cost .. and track day cover at pretty reasonable rates... each to their own :)

I guess I am lucky in the dealer I(edit) delete I replace with WE (as both of our Porsches are insured that the same brokers (end edit) have found

I am changing insurance 29th June, from Preffered to more than, i have been with preffered for quite a few years now, Preffered was £485, More than is £530 but i get free roadside assistance and i dont have to pay the £150 a year for the tracker plus i dont loose my no claims (full) no matter how many claims i have (but i hope that continues to be nil)
Live outskirts of Leicester, just over 50.
The thing that swung it for me is not having to have the tracker - if it gets nicked i dont want it back

Just to reiterate a point made earlier - the 'cheaper' companies - Elephant, Admiral, etc. do NOT generally insure optional extras other than metallic paint. Their small print will usually exclude 'modifications' and the smaller print will vaguely imply your factory-fitted options are considered modifications. When you enquire about it, they tell you that you need to specify all optional extras at extra cost, at which point the premium is close to that of a 'specialist' policy. They may fail to point out at this point that your optional extras will still NOT be covered in any payouts, despite the extra premium - the increase is only to cover the extra risk of your option-laden car being stolen. If someone steals your declared 19" Carerra alloys they'll only reimburse you for a set of basic standard rims.
