Interior lights - fade out or just turn off?

ORIGINAL: Northern924

Well I was baffled by the equations and was thinking sod that I'm just going to be happy with it going out straight away, after the past 2 post think I'll be having a go at this [:D]

Do all Mk2 Golfs have the dimmer built in with their courtesy lights?

Not sure if all Mk2 Golfs have this option I was only told about the GTI so I got one from eBay from a breakers as to original equipment, although the original did not dim it was the same manufacturer (Hella) as the Golf so in my book close enough. When I did mine I had to turn the lamp unit by 180deg so the switch is on the left not right as original to allow the unit to fit properly but it may not be an issue on all models. Other than that and changing one connector it was simple even the wiring was the same set up so make a note on your original one where the wires go as they fit on the same corresponding connectors on the Golf unit i.e. top, middle, bottom although from memory I think the middle one is on the opposite side.

I also replaced to original lamp with an LED Festoon and what a difference not a white light that you can see the interior with.

Iirc the car has to be on sidelights for the bulb to come on when the bonnet is opened.
Yes. And the thing is used so infrequently it quite often has a bad contact on it somewhere, or the bulb is blown.

Oli.

Thanks for the guidance guys. The light does indeed work with the side or main lights. The ignition does not need to be on. Mine works perfectly :)
