Invitation to the Porsche Club by the Royal International Air TattooFairford Gloucestershire

Hi

Yes I went to the Chattsworth meet several weeks ago and whilst sat on the grass noticed numerous people trying door handles and bonnets etc.

I did notice however that most woman were aware of there handbags and held them away. Also children with a couple of exceptions were well controlled

So reluctantly I agree they would need to be roped off.

I tend to disagree although you do have a point.
The whole point of showing off our cars, in my opinion, is to let people get up close and have a look inside.
This works without any problem to the many hundreds of cars at the Castle Combe events and is what attracts the visitors and is also the attraction at the Avenue Drivers, just imagine trying to rope that off.
Just my thoughts though

My wife and I had a fantastic day on Sunday, so many thanks to the organisers. We spent the majority of our time watching the air show from the Pims enclosure, which was great. On one of the two occasions I returned to my car I saw two people touch it/ try the doors. When I saw a child with his family touch my car I expected one if his parents to tell him that this was the wrong thing to do. However I then saw his father do the same thing. I guess some people have no respect for other people's property. I would NEVER touch another persons car unless invited too and expect others to respect my property in this way. The child was very interested in touching the GT3 and shingling a bag around near it too.

However it would be a real shame to rope cars off. Maybe a better solution would be to put signs up with wording such as 'look but don't touch' as I am sure most people can be trusted, it's just the minority that spoil it.

One small bugbear with the event was the so called breakfast. Only permitted one pasty after making the effort to get there before 6.30am was a little off. Especially when you are told by a man eating a huge bacon sandwich!

I was on duty at the display on Sunday and most visitors were respectful but obviously some were interested in looking inside, particularly the GT's. As I only had my own keys, most were happy to look/sit in my C2S, particularly the kids who were the most knowledgeable too [:D] John, who owns the GT2 spent most of Saturday doing the same. Still, a quick wash to get rid of the fingerprints and we'll be ready for Silverstone.

Richard Watling will take on board comments and feedback as it looks like the invitation will be extended for next year, and I agree we'll need more manpower on the Club areas particularly if in a more prominent position. Roping off would be a shame IMO.

Great Air Show though, even from the Club stand viewpoint, and thanks to Jen for running the Club transporter all weekend.

All depends on location for me. The fact that most displays are roped off with controlled access in by limited numbers means that when you find an area without that control you're going to get people touching. That's fine off the beaten track but once in a prominent area, with so many people, i think there is a high chance of someone leaving with a tear in their eye!. If we move more centrally next year i think we should rope off but have everyone attending on a rota allowing access in limited numbers. Based on numbers this year we'd probably oly have to do an hour each. maybe like with the aircraft we could have a collection tin for donations to the benevolent fund?

Ultimately i quite liked our spot. It's an air show but those interested in our cars would come to see them and generally appear to have respected them. It was also on the escape route for those not able to stay right to the end.

I agree with Peter's comments - roping off would be a shame and if you have sufficient volunteers it's possible to supervise the display reasonably well. I spent most of Saturday showing visitors around my GT2 and it seemed to be pretty well received by the general public, and as Peter did a quick wash removed the fingerprints!

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions all of which will be taken on board. I have a meeting with the Fairford team this week with the intention of planning next year's event well in advance. I think there is a good chance that there will be an invitation to take part again next year and that they will steadily adapt to the needs of display cars as well as aircraft. I know they are very motivated to grow the idea and make it a success. Whilst there were inevitably one or two issues given that there was little time to organise and it was the first time. on balance I think it can be counted as a very good event - fortunately all members turned up on time and that enabled us to process you all quickly and get you on the display area, so thanks for that

I am writing an article for PP with a very short deadline and I do not have any photographs of the Porsche display area; I do have one or two aerial pics but none of the C27 Transport in a barrel roll which for me was the highlight. If anyone has got one or more and is willing to have them published would you please send them to factoryvisit@porscheclubgb.com? A suitable acknowledgement will be made.

Many thanks

Richard Watling
