iPod in 997?

Has anyone had an iPod connection fitted to their 997?

Had the M-Benz iPod connection kit fitted to my E-Class Mercedes, which works pretty well. Asked my OPC about doing the same to my 997 but they told me there was no official solution.

Any experience?

Thanks

I am waiting for my Dension Gateway 500 to arrive at the moment, due in monday 23rd April, so as Im swapping cars on the 28th it will probably be early may I will have it installed, so I will do a write up on it then.
From doing research etc ie trawling the various forums for info, it seems the dension gateway is the best available solution at the moment.

Hi there, just add a bit of news I have had the Gateway 500 fitted to my Cayenne yesterday but my local OPC cannot give the head to match the Gateway as it should with a normal cdc4 changer, also have spoken to local audio company who have same problem with Cayman s and he is waiting on Dension tech getting back to him and then to me.
PS Both cars had never been fitted with cdc4 originally.

There is an article in total 911 this month about different options. In a nutshell it seems to suggets that the gateway is the best option for 997. I am personally waiting until somebody I knows has it done and can give me a demonstration.

I have just installed a Gateway 500 in my 997 which has sat nav but no multichanger. I was going to get the unit professionally installed but timing was all wrong so I attempted it myself. Its really quite easy providing you have a sat nav or cd changer as you tap into the MOST "ring main" optical circuit. Took me about an hour to fix in the hardware. I have taken a few pictures if anybody is interested. I have to fine tune the set up as I have not yet been able to get song titles up on my PCM screen but can play from the ipod and the sound is good.

Have just done a bit of fiddling with the unit, taking the power supply out and then restarting ( a bit like rebooting a computer) and I now have play lists on the PCM with song titles. It appears that it does what it says on the tin. All I need to do now is buy a large capacity ipod to keep my complete collection in the car.

This is what I have been waiting for. How good is the functionality?

I understand that you have song titles but can you select artist or do you have to pre-load playlists which display as CD's?

First post from me!

Just changing from an M3 to 997C4S and have a Denison setup in my M3. I cannot get by with a CD changer any more so keen to see if the new 500 box works well. Jonathan could you clarify a couple of things:

is the silver box also installed in the glovebox, it looks as though it is best that way and then also have the control box and the ipod cable all together ?
can you play ipod video through the head unit whilst driving?
does it replicate the ipod menu in the head unit or are you effectively saying cd1 is playlist 1 and so on?

please send me some pics if you have them, much appreciated.

I want to make sure I order bits in time for when I pick the car up.

Hi Count

I installed the silver box in the boot just sitting on top of the sat nav dvd player. There is plenty of room there and I secured the Dension with extra strong velcro. The cables are all out of site and the ipod and other holders for the other inputs are in the space to the right of the sat nav ( looking from the front of the car) and with all the doors closed there is nothing visible in the boot. I opted to not have the ipod in the glove box. I look on the ipod as a sophisticated multicd changer. I will put the pictures on this site but probably not until later today or tomorrow.

I am delighted with the system. Shame Porsche dont provide this facility yet.

PS Count

Look on Bumperplugs.com there are pictures of the 500 in a 997 and my installation has mimicked that one.

Thanks for all the information guys. I assume that as I have a CD changer already fitted, this will have to be removed to fit the Gateway 500?

Looking at the bumperplugs link, clearly the CDC remains in place and afaik, the head unit can handle the 500 as an aux source so you should be able to have both still.

Yes with the dension I understand you can leave the CDC in place, it is not one of the solutions that use the CDC link to connect up. I am going to be very interested to see how it works, as I had an M6 that they put the link in & you lost the CDC, it used the CD1 - 6 menus on the IDrive for Ipod functions. ie CD1 = All tracks, CD2= Playlists,CD3 = artists, CD4 = Albums...etc you get the idea. So im hoping the Dension has a good way of navigating the same sort of info. Generally I sort the stuff into playlists anyway, as its easier & quicker than looking through hundreds of albums/artists etc

Just chased Dension and the bluetooth bolt-on to the Gateway 500 and also the AV extender bolt-on look to be hard to get right now. I have ordered the 500 and arranged installation at the OPC ahead of collecting my car. The installer is the one the OPC use al the time but they didn't stock Dension. They were happy to install a box I supply to an install design I choose and reckon about 90 mins work at £60 per hour so call it £100 (plus VAT I expect).

Seems a deal to me as the box on-line was £280.

With the Bluetooth bolt-on I'd have the perfect setup with an integrated phone and iPod.

If you see the Dension page on the 500 http://www.dension.com/icelinkgateway500.php you can see the Bluetooth module. It seems to provide a Bluetooth extension to the 500 device and give you the ability to use a variety of BT features including obviously handsfree calling integrated to the car. It means in use you have another virtual input to the 500 Gateway that can be your phone. It even seems to allow you to use any storage on the phone for music etc. My phone is a Sony Ericsson Walkman as well so this is quite a neat fallback if I found myself without the iPod or with the mobile with a new CD stored that I'd not yet bothered to load to the iPod.

Primarily though, any mobile is going to have Bluetooth now so this means I have far easier handsfree in the car without any hassle (if I can find a supplier for the extra bit !)

Dont understand the bluetooth link Im afraid. Am I being really stupid here, but ok you can connect your phone via bluetooth to the dension unit, and yes I can see how you could receive calls through the speakers in the cars stereo system, but how do you make a call or talk back to someone? ie where is the microphone?..
