I have been thinking of painting my car due to there being some small amounts rust in verious places and thought these arches might spice it up a little ?

What do we all think ? is the 944 already wide enough[:)].

Steve.

I think they look fantastic (I'm a sucker for exposed fasteners on bodywork), but in reality not only would it be a problem getting wheels to fill them, but the 944 is already over tyred with the biggest size that you can stuff under the standard arches, so they are unnecessary.

It would, but it wouldn't provide any performance advantage and would probably introduce handling nastiness and possibly a hunger for wheel bearings.

My definition if unnecessary here is that it provides no improvement other than cosmetic, and it isn't the sort of mod that should be done for purely cosmetic reasons in my book.

Alright Steve , I would say you might wipe a considerable amount of value from your 944 by fitting such a kit , I think it is made to look like the 911 GT2 model , On the 911 it looks the Dogs but on the 944 it looks a bit cheap . I would say this type of kit would be great for track use and I have seen race prepared 944 is the U.S with full livery and they do look fantastic as race cars , but it would be like driving a Touring car or a full blown GT around every day , not to my liking but suppose that why we all like different things in life , I am running 18inch BBS Classic alloys with 10inch rears and that really fills the rear arches nicely , best regards J

I'm certain that this is a car owned by a Rennlist member called Guns. It is undergoing a complete transformation and will make that look tame by comparison. The intention is to run at least 335 tyres. A LOT of money has been spent on this project. It won't be to everyone's taste but very interesting nonetheless!

I think it that it would look the dog's whatsits on a trackcar. If you had a slightly rough turbo that needed new wings etc, then this would be worth doing[:)]

There's a 968 in the US that's been turbo'd running a similar design and it looks fantastic, I never quite liked it so much on Guns car but suspect it was as much the choice of colour than anything,

Here's a picture or two of the wide bodied look I prefer on the 944. I did consider doing it to my car, but figured you'd need a lot of power to pull it off convincingly, and rust between the fibreglass and the metal could be an issue, plus you would have to spend a lot on suitable wheels and tyres and ultimately it would become less useable on the road. If I had a track only car, could afford a custom set of BBS LM's and was running 500bhp+ then I'd go for it without hesitation.

Slightly off-topic, but interesting treatment of the front bumper on Gun's car ... although it does mean that the front of those big front arches don't fit around the curve on the bumper, at the bottom ...

I'm with Fen on deeming them un-necessary tho'. The chassis dynamics of a 944 are about as sweet as you could possibly wish for, and bigger (wider) wheels is a sure-fire way of ruining that sweetness. Those big arches with stock wheels would look really daft, so you'd need spacers (or very wide tyres) to make it look sensible, and even then it would look silly to my eyes. And you'd have spoiled the handling. Driver, or poser? Such arches would put you firmly in the latter category.

(But then I always have been a sucker for keeping the stock look on cars.)

Alright Pal , I think my 8 year old son hit the nail on the head with the silver version of this GT2 944 look , he said it looks like it's made From tin plate and it's going to fall to peaces ,No doubt the owner has spent a fortune on this 944 to get it to this end result , but like some women who also spend a small fortune on cosmetic surgery , they don't always look to attractive !!! If it was in a different colour then it may look a total different car , and I had a look at the pic's on this topic today and noticed that huge GT style rear wing on the silver 944 !!! Over cooked Fast and Furious comes to mind !!! The yellow version looks really nice and very classy indeed , I have bought a full front splitter for my 944T and it cost £160 plus £60 to have it painted and I do like the Turbo 968 rear adjustable spoiler , but cost a small fortune , so the original also adds a lot of character to the 944 . Here are some pic's of my dream car that some day I will build , when the 968 come down a little in price , I am going to make a Turbo version of the 968 very rare the Turbo RS , wide enough for my liking and absolutely beautiful with the Turbo adjustable rear spoiler , front splitter ,cup mirrors , They have made a slot in the bonnet same as the 924 Turbo so the air goes straight into the air filter induction very nicely made indeed , I would say this is a perfect looking 968 , best regards J.C

Not worked out how to upload two pic's in one posting so here is a pic of the engine bay on the 968 Turbo , [FONT=comic sans ms"]
Absolutely Devine , see the Air Induction kit attached directly to the Turbo so you get plenty of cold air in !!! work of art , if I popped the bonnet of my 944T and had this to show off , I would be the happiest man on the planet !!! Regards J.C[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I've seen pics of that 968 before, it realy is stunning. There are some wonderful modified 968 racers out there. I hope you're able to build the car you want, it'd be such a great project. I still want to make a modern version of the 924 GTR, if I had the space I'd buy a shell now and start working on it [8|]

Those clubautosport pics should be banned under some humanitarian law or EC directive - ewwwwww yuk! [:'(]

I think the main thing that lets Guns car down is the silver colour scheme, a flat red, blue or yellow would have been much better. I'm not sure if it's going to become an out and out racecar, but it would be more than a bit OTT for a street car IMHO. Most of the large arched, huge winged US cars are very powerful racecars that need wide tyres and big wings to compete with the more modern machinery in their race class.

One of the nicest widebody racecars I have seen belongs to a Dutchman called Hans who posts on Rennlist. It's a 1050kg Turbo with a 2.5L engine putting out 350bhp but he's building a 2.8L with a limit of 400bhp to meet his class rules

Ok firstly that is Gun's car well before he started the real project on it so it doesn't have any of those panels on it now. Might have some of them for sale if you guys really want them. hehehe
Secondly JC, the vents in the RS hood are for drawing hot air out, not cool air in. Cool air comes in through the vents in the nose cone, passes through i/c & rad, and then out through the hood into a low pressure area. Plus it's sealed from weather.
Peter, that Yellow 968 with the bolt on flares is Solo's car and I agree it does look pretty smart and within the boundaries of acceptable taste for a road/track car. The rear end shot of the other Yellow car shows another kit that you can purchase and is probably the best fitting kit commercially available, but that one piece bumper cover acts like a parachute and would not be suited to your pursuits. This from the guy who makes it.
Lastly, WTF is that Blue.....thing?? I'm with Paul. EEEUUUWWWWW!!!!!

As far as cars that are under or over tyred, what are the defining characteristics anyway. Disregarding under, but for this conversation how much is too much, and I'm not talking of appearance. Ideally up to 450 ish hp you are probably fine with 9's and 10's but I think you could go bigger depending on application and powerband. Over that hp/tq level you might well want bigger. Also you don't want too much difference between front and rear. Han's car has run 305's all round I believe. Our cars respond much better with very similar sized tyres front to rear...in higher hp cars anyway. It all depends on the application of course.

Alright Peter
If you like the GTR then check out these pic's from Club Auto UK

Not really my cup of tea , might have some use for one of those bonnet vents to cool the engine bay or feed direct cold air to the intake . Other than that a little bit extreme for the road but would look great on track side with a nice race paint job , or plain white might suit it too . Best regards J.C

I've seen that car in the flesh and it works slightly better than in pictures (it was back at CAS being repaired when I visted them last year), although that's not saying much I suppose... I did only see the front end as the rest was under a cover so that probably helped too [:)]
