[8D]I am not sure if the new 997 Cabrio is really worth a 987 + £27000 :ROFLMAO: as great a car as it may well be

There is a market for them I suppose.

I have theory that people buy 911s based on wealth rather than the appreciation of their driving ability(both car and driver). A mate of mine went out one Sunday drove a TVR and loved it, then he looked into the ownership hassle and went and bought a 911 targa without driving it (which he obviously now loves)!!!

I used to say I'd love a 911 based on looks and kudos, but not having driven one and having driven various 986s and 987s I can't see how they can be that much better (go drive one i hear you say!!!!...no... I can't afford one)

Can't wait for a blast with a 911 when I get mine....IN THIRTEEN DAYS!!!!!!!!...I bet i'll win!!!

I've driven both 997 Carrera S (coupe) and 987 Boxster S. The Carrera is a superb machine, but with 355BHP its all over "quite quickly", and then your fearing for your licence. The Boxster with only 280ish BHP still needs to be driven, and so long as you haven't wimped it and got the hard top, you can drop the roof anytime it takes your fancy.

I cannot get on at all with the design of the 911 cabriolet. If you have one it must be because you like it with the roof down - the hard top comes as standard, need I say more!

My standard 2.7 Boxster does it for me, although I have to admit that I do wonder if I can ever get into 911 (coupe) ownership - I think the 997 is just brilliant.

although in fairness to the 911 Cab..... I'm sure she will do well in the US...

but the title is like saying is a Carerra GT worth when it is 3 times the price of a GT3 RS !

No.

I had a 993 Cab for several years and last year Geoff Turral lent me a C4 Cab and a C4S Cab, each for a couple of weeks. Yes, you do have the benefits of the 911 and open air motoring but, IMO, it is too compromised. The advantage of the rear seats is lost because there is less rear space and the back rests are too vertical even for kids to be comfortable. And, again IMO, it only looks its best with the hood up. In addition, compared with the coupe, there is the extra weight and slightly less sharp handling.

Surely the sensible money would buy a new 987 S, and the £27k left over could be invested in a 'real' appreciating 911 (a 2.2/2.4S or a 911 Club Sport or a 964RS or a 993 C2).

Some of us wimps drive our cars all year round and drive to work and back in the cold, damp darkness of an English winter. Not all of us want to look like pretentious prats driving around a windy city in the middle of said English winter with the roof off when everyone is out and about in thermals.

JCB..

JCB,

I drive my Boxster all year round too: I've covered 20k in 17 months in it, to and from work every day, up and down various motorways (mainly the M1 to Yorkshire) and cross-country drives...

And the roof comes down whenever I feel like it and the weather allows.

I don't see how enjoying one of the car's key design features makes you a "pretentious prat", but hey, since you don't actually get a badge for using your Boxster all year round how could you know...?

If using a hard-top keeps you safe and warm then ultimately that is up to the user. I think to do so means missing opportunities for open-top motoring which is one of the things I enjoy about my car.

Keep up the good work Oliver!!! [;)]

Mine gets used in all conditions, all year too.

I don't have the luxury of a glass rear screen, so the top stays up for most of the winter.

Snow is, in fact, only a minor inconvenience .

rightly or wrongly driving in the winter with the roof down makes you look like a fanny to most people.

Paul,

You're probably right, but I guess that

1) they've never tried it and,
2) I'm not sure I care[:D].

I could after all, drive around with my fog lights on instead, that'd make my car look cool, wouldn't it...?

At the slightest hint of sunshine, winter or summer, I take the top down on my wife's Alfa-Romeo Spider -it is SO refreshing!!! Closest I'll get to a motorbike these days.....[&o]

Had a couple of thumbs up from the British soft top brigade over the years.

It's the only way to travel in a ragtop, IMNVHO.......

The process is similar to the one that makes you a wimp for having a hard top![;)]

I refer the honourable Gentleman to the new thread started by another member, titled "70 miles for no other reason than fun", and rest my case[:)].

p.s. Anybody know how Caterham owners cope? [&:]
