http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=60934&start=20 That is I didn't buy a WB - but a 1997 C4 from 911virgin. Good history, a little tidying up needed, but looks and feels (gut feel that is) like a good car. It has 18" sport design wheels on - where these an option available on 1997 cars as I thought these were 996 GT3 wheels..???

Can't work out how to add pics in this forum, so have added a link to 911uk.com - sorry if this is bad form..

For what it's worth I have a C4 and a properly sorted one and wouldn't pay the extra for an S. My cars done circa 70k miles and I had a FULL suspension setup done by Centre Gravity and it now handles properly set 10mm above RS ride height. The difference in handling is fantastic and well worth the outlay if u enjoy have a decent blast in your car. The bigger hips on the 993 are great to look at but I bet most of them don't handle as well as my C4 as they will have been sat on the same suspension for the last 15yrs or so. The important part in making your decision on a car is chosing one that's been maintained properly rather than one than 'looks the part' but u gonna have to shell out on it constantly. You'll soon fall out of love with a car that keeps costing u cash. Mine wasn't cheap but then cheap cars are cheap for a reason. No slur on the S here btw given the choice all things being equal and for the same cash I'd have one everyday over the NB but they ain't the same cash!!!! Good luck with it and enjoy.

Well done - she looks really good - I think the silver colours show off the curves[8D] in a way that I wish black did.

Tidy looking car Richard.

Don't think the sport design wheels were ever an option for the 993, are they not a 996 wheel?

Can't agree with you on the colour though Mark, they look soooo much better in well polished black [:)]

Yes! - but that's the problem - the polishing! - How's yours after the winter? Mine definitely needs some TLC but it's raining again here.

It's certainly not looking its best that's for sure Mark. The tatty 16 inch wheels with winter tyres don't help of course.

Looking forward to the Spring clean day at Eastern Western in March. If we get a good weekend before that I'll make a start on it because a day isn't enough time. But it's worth it because black always rewards the effort I feel.

thats the thing - the sport design wheels are specced on the options sticker...!!?? but I agree, I thought they were 996 wheels??

finally got to the bottom of this.... The car should have 18" technology wheels on it, and luckily I have just found some, so the car is going back to factory-fresh look. I'm also painting the calipers back to silver as someone had done a pretty pants job of painting them red. the car was specced with 033, lowered chassis. Is this just a case of shorter springs..??

Springs and shocks would I think. Do a search on here - several people have swapped to that so I don't think much else changes.

It's actually just springs, not shocks for M033 - same old Monroes unless a previous owner has changed them.

Hi Richyd,
Great, you now have Porsche's best, a 993. Plenty of TLC and it will reward you for years to come. I bought mine from 911 Virgin in 05 and do not regret the purchase. Mine is a non vario but none the worse for that. It is also a Tip S. It may seem a bit grandaddyish but in fact is a joy. Cruising across to Austria it is bliss and should you get caught in a tail back in Germany a positive godsend. I have done two tack days with tuition to get a grip on fast driving in the turns. Well worth the investment. I did one 360 on my first outing so was not hanging about. My passenger fell silent. I wonder why? I have spent a few pounds sorting out the inevitable degradations. The Monroe shocks were original so needed replacement. Discs also. When I had the four wheel alignment checked and adjusted the car drove noticeably better. Maybe you are lucky with good bonnet struts. Mine were clapped and eventually I got fed-up being whacked on the head. I changed them at minimal cost but remember it was a bit awkward to do. Like comments on another thread my car was fitted with a Sony Jukebox!. A replacement Becker really looks the part. I hope when radio goes fully digital there will be a suitable upgrade available rather than having to replace the whole thing. In reality I use it mainly when parked up admiring a view or taking a breather on a long trip. Economy is remarkably good unless the right foot is well planted and then it drops to the mid twenties. On track it may well have been a bit lower still. But hell, it is a great drive and the sound addictive. Just remembered, I also fitted a motorsound filter cover so my sound fix is even better. Who needs substances when there are Porsches around.
Enjoy the miles.

What kind of mileage are you getting before it drops to the mid twenties? Maybe I'm just too much of a hooligan in mine (C4 manual) but my average mile per gallon is in the late teens unless I am cruising on the motorway. Most of my driving does tend to be on A and B roads avoiding motorways where at all possible. If I press on (on A or B roads) it's in the region of 15/16 mpg. I have never tracked it but I would consider any double figure return to be a bonus on a track.

I saw 29 mpg once......when driving on a slow motorway at around 55-60 mph. Most times the average is 23, dropping to 18 or so when pressing on.

Hi Clyd,
My UK journeys are usually 100-200 miles and 4-500 a day on the continent. I average 28 and I have had a couple of days on cruise control on French motorways when the average has been almost 30. I do not wish the "Flicks" to take my licence and car which they have been known to do. They espercially like red Ferraris.
My 28 on continental journeys includes a few fast blasts in Germany at 140 mph or so. Usually when trying to shake off Volvos. I never bother with BMWs or Mercs because they can leave me for dead. I need a turbo to see them off. I try to be progressive on the throttle rather than dump gulps of fuel into the cylinders and it seems just as fast. Good luck with your right foot. At £1.50 a litre it is a good technique to develop.

I'm working on the principle that I want to get my share of the petrol before it runs out, so I try use it as quickly as I can [:)]

I do notice my economy shooting up whenever I use motorways but I don't really see the point in taking a 993, or any other Porsche on one, unless it's an unrestricted autobahn. I could see how your economy is up that high if most of your trips are motorway driving Richard. But I have to say that you're missing out on the best part of 993 ownership.

Clyde

PS You should also leave all Mercs and Beemers for dead Richard as they're limited to 155mph, which is just a canter for the 993. I would think even the few de-restricted ones out there would be struggling to keep up if you wanted to teach them a lesson.

Guys, some of you must have lead diving boots on! I get better economy from the tt, maybe it`s just that I don`t have to rev it as hard to make swift progress. It manages between 25 - 27 mpg on the motorway and 20 - 24 mpg at other times, it only did 13 mpg around the Ring though! I don`t use it for short journeys, that does make a big difference as it shows 16 mpg when cold for the the first mile or two.

i have been using the 993 as a daily driver for the last 2-3 weeks[:)]and having a lot of fun

as a result when i filled it up with super unleaded at 146.5p yesterday the range on the tank showed 186 miles[]!!!!!

so yes about 15-16mpg around town when cold which is what most of the driving has been.but given the current world situation i am not going to worry too much and go for a bit of motoring pleasure!!

Mine is my daily driver, so yes a small part of the low consumption will be down to the fact that I may have a larger percentage of miles covered where it not fully warmed up. But these are low speed miles in a built up area, so wont make a huge difference.

I think the biggest factor though is that I am just so addicted to the great noise it makes above 4,000 revs [;)]
