If it fails you can get drive back by being a little brutal with it - it's pieces of rubber catching between the flywheel and friction plate that are causing the drive to stay engaged - if you floor the clutch and accelerate hard the rubber will break into ever smaller pieces. Be careful with the backlash and lack of cusion once you have got it working though; you really need to baby it after the initial brutality.

I've had the clutch judder in heavy traffic problem for I don't know how long. Read the suggestion of a few of you above re changing the clutch fluid and gave it a try on the weekend. Bought a Gunson Easibleed from Halfords and it couldn't have been easier (at least once I realised I needed and then tracked down a 7mm spanner for the slave cylinder nipple).
Anyway, the old fluid was absolutely filthy (a very dark grey/black colour). It seems to have made a huge difference. The clutch action is much much smoother and so far (touch wood) the judder has completely disappeared.
I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.
