Just a wee tale .... 2.5 8V Restoration

My past 944's have consisted of three S2's and an early 2.5 that I took in px against my 968, I never drove it and just moved it on.

I've never gone out to look for a Turbo ignoring S2's nor the other way round, it always just ended up that the best car on the market at the particular time was always an S2......and red with black leather !

I never really opted to look for a 2.5 or 2.7

Having sold my S2 in June 2015 and finding out a few weeks later that I had cancer I believed my car tinkering days were over, at the very least.

Anyway, after a very rough year and some great support from a couple of close friends on here, you know who you are, I took the plunge a few weeks ago and got myself a little 1988 2.5 to tinker with......red with black interior !!

I have to say this little car has lifted my spirits 100%, it needs things doing, as they all do at some point, but when I'm not up to holding a spanner I feel good just standing with a brew and looking at it.

Anyway, the car itself....

Well it would appear it's never had a spanner laid on it in anger, by that I mean it shows no sign of ever being taken apart except for routine servicing, everything is where it should be, it appears to have never had paint or panel work, but will be receiving some remedial repairs.

The handbook pack, service book etc are all present including the instruction book for the NEC car phone kit, the full phone kit excluding handset is still in place and it still has the factory fitted stereo.

I'm only the 4th owner at 123k miles and it's never had a reg change

When I removed the 'sports' high bolstered seats, yippee, I found a business card underneath and the details matched the first owner in the service book, I also found about £1.70 and a horrible comb with hair still in it.

On the underside of the seats between the spring and foam were the Recaro parts labels, I wasn't aware Recaro made them.

Behind the rear bumper I found a black plastic box magnetised to the rear panel for hiding a spare key...I slid it open in anticipation...no key in it, but who would leave your spare Porsche key behind your bumper !

The engine bay has more original silver factory build stickers than I have seen on any of my previous 944's and a clear sticker on the screen near the mirror warning about oil checks, again something my others never had.

The front struts , although worn out probably, still have the part number decals on and dabs of paint on the coil springs, I think this indicated the poundage ?

Anyway, I think you can maybe tell I'm enjoying the start of my journey with this little 2.5, it has the makings of a great car and maybe by excluding this model in the past I've missed out on some other colours....but red with black trim is growing on me !!

Cheers, Paul

Great wee write up Paul and glad you're busy with the new car. Sadly should have added a photo or two to show the work in progress. Next time maybe? Enjoy it and best wishes.

Glad it's going well for you, when your feeling down it's good to have something to occupy your mind, been where you are now in 2010.

I had something else last year and now heart surgery this year, another week and I can start looking at the 968 again, can't wait

Hi Paul

Welcome back sir, sorry to hear of your health issues, hopefully, a nice 944 sitting on the drive will bring a big smile to your face...ATB

Pete

Well Paul had only had the car for a few weeks and it is basically in bits, he cannot help himself !

As said it is a very honest straight little car, require some bodywork sorting ( in progress ) when all done it will be a belter.

Paul......pictures required for the brethren!

And it's my fault for forcing you to pay the extra £50 to buy it :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

And it will be ready for the Germany 2017 Tour won't it [;)]

Every £50 matters to us poor pensioners.....

Germany is the target

I'm looking to change the carpet and door pockets to black so if anyone has any nice black interior pieces including the rear hatch area I'd be very pleased to hear from you.

Looks nice. All black can be a little dingy. I have two red black/black cars and Im disappointed to say that it is a good idea in principle, but not so great in practice. I would be interested in those 'light grey' carpets though, when you do swap them.

Remember that series two type carpets have rears available with provision for a full sized or a collapsible spare, depending on year. Without a sizeable investment, a collapsible spare isn't a reliable proposition, so Id fit a more modern space saver and use an earlier (full size) carpet.

Get well soon.

Thanks for the comments guys

The carpets are linen (beige) I think, if I can't find nice black ones I'll stick with these or dye them, they are already out and in the loft.

The car does have the collapsible space saver, lovely original toolkit and jack....but no factory compressor.

I say the car is untouched but what I have deduced from the VIL is that originally it had 15" Teledials, now it has 16" D90's , which I'm not sure we're even an option ?, so I just picked up a very nice set of Tele's and will put it back onto those eventually and sell the D90's.

All the best, Paul

Light Grey until 1989 when Linen was introduced. An extremely confusing name though as they're a beigy colour and better described as grey-beige (although that in itself can cause confusion, but I wont bore you with why).

An '88 is a genuinely uncommon car btw - much more so than the 'rare' 2.7l 1989 MY car...

Thats interesting Simon, why is that, had the 2.5 been discontinued by 88 ?

Mine was registered 01/08/88

They just weren't selling Paul. I think that rumours about the coming new models were enough to cause people to wait before buying, too. Add to this that the S was also available, leaving Porsche selling relatively few 1988 MY 944s. 1989 MY 2.7l cars are positively common by comparison.

So to update...

After a couple of weeks ownership the car had all its interior removed and seats stored in the spare bedroom, I did ask permission first.

Simon was correct the carpets are light grey as indicated by factory stickers on the rear of them, they are all stored in the loft and I have most of a full black carpet set now but still searching for some pieces.

In early December the car was collected and taken to a local bodyshop who have become the local 'go to' place for quality work on classics. On dropping it off it was joined by a 911SC , Escort MK1 Mexico, Mini 1275GT, very early XR3 and a TR4, all in for full bare shell restorations.

With me supplying all the genuine OPC panels the lads got off to a flying start but I did stress there was no rush and I was happy for other small jobs to jump the que to keep my bill down !

Well the first side was completed before the Xmas break and given a protective coat of primer just for now and work began on the passenger side.

After a full Xmas break confined to the bed and sofa with man flu I made a visit to the bodyshop this morning and progress has been really good.

I know the panel lads working on the car well having worked alongside them a few years ago building an Escort RS for their boss at the time, they are certainly going the extra mile, all the factory spot welds were measured and marked on the new panels, all gaps measured etc before any cutting took place.

So the panels have been spotted into place as per the factory , they recently took delivery of three new computer controlled spot welders with every available attachment to get in and around panels plus a very powerful single side spot gun.

With a birthday just before Xmas and a list of parts left where the wife and kids could find them I appear to have been in the good books as I received a full belt and pulley kit, spark plugs, filters, dizzy cap, rotor arm plus lots of other little pieces that are all needed and appreciated.....better than socks and Maltesers.

A few images, firstly the panels I supplied, the inner panel was sacrificed to make a repair at the end of the sill.
