Just picked it up today! (Now with pics)

I am now the proud owner of an 86' 944 Lux in Guards Red having spent many years messing around with old VW's, but always really wanting a Porsche.

Well it was on a budget, therefore my new pride and joy has a few things that need attention. This is to be expected as she has covered just under 160k. I thought that I'd list the things I've noted since picking her up this morning in the hope that you guys will be able to put me on the right track?

1. Clutch judder - I'm assuming a new clutch assy but have no idea how costly this is. An old bill with the paperwork says £600 odd for a clutch so hope that's come down!
2. Diff Whine - Very very faint whine. Would be interested to know if this is something that needs to be lived with and is common or if it's a horror story just about to happen. Hopefully some new oil will restore a little quietness.
3. Drivers window NW - Think it's the motor as the radio display dims when the switch is pressed for the window indicating that the switch is working? No noise and no movement.
4. Boot switch - It looks like there are two latches for the oot lid and only one works from the switch on the kick pannel.
5. Coolant Leak - Very minor coolant loss just off centre (slightly to N/S) dripping down under radiator (hope it's a clip).
6. Sunroof - Read the manual... unclipped the front clips but can't see how it comes out... any tips? I guess the toothed bars at the rear should pop out, but I can't get mine to budge!
7. Hole in back edge lip of back box - Need a new one!
8. Slight brake judder - Need new disc's and pads.
9. Sloppy rear end - Probably needs rear shocks or bushes as it's a bit wallowy.
10. Headlining - Coming down along the edge where it meets the boot apperture.

Apart from the above and the fact that she needs a good service, I am in love. I appreciate it's not at the top of the Porsche tree, however I think it looks a million dollars and when attended to should drive well to.

Clutch judder. No the prices havnt come down. There the same. as its mostly labour thats the ££££ bit... Diff whine. Maybee as you say some fresh oil... Window. Yes the motors do pack up.. about £100 for a new one OR get one off a breaker.. Boot latch. Could just be stuck. They do this ,, Its a common fault. Bit of WD40 might do the trick.?? Headlining. Another common fault on the older cars...I think its just a panel across the back. 2 screws fix it on..Might be able to get one from the breakers. The rest. I think youve got it covered... Happy Porsching...

Most of these are common issues - you should find plenty of answers on this forum through search, and here: [link=http://www.clarks-garage.com/]http://www.clarks-garage.com/[/link] I found my 924S clutch juddered more when cold & wet - it was on its way out but didn't fail for thousands of miles when treated sympathetically. Don't worry about the diff - "they all do that sir" - actually, they don't all whine, lots do, but it's not a sign of impending doom. An oil change may quieten it (Don't forget to remove the filler plug before the drain plug! [:D]) Latches - Have a look inside the boot - the mechanism is pretty straightforward & you should be able to see if both latches are connecting to the motor. Sunroof - don't force the rear latches. They retract when you have the ignition key in a different position & actuate the roof switch. As for the coolant leak - get under the car & find out exactly where it's coming from. If it's dripping from the front engine covers or near the waterpump then it might be more urgent to attend to. In any event, you need to make sure the belts & rollers are all OK - lose a cambelt & you've lost your engine. Do you know when the belts were last changed? It should be every 3-4 years, even if the car has only done 5k in the last 4 years you should get them done. (and get the waterpump done while you're in there if there's no evidence it has been changed in the last 10 years)

Hi James, best buy is, as always, a Guards Red lux. 1986 is considered the best year as well. [:)] Set the "display topics from last" bit on the 944 forum homepage to "365 days", read back over the year's threads and you'll learn everything you need. Feel free to ask any questions here. The regulars have many years of experience and are always happy to share their knowledge. If you're anything like me you'll still be smiling every time you drive it after 5 years!

Hi m8 Just brought a 944 myself & have a few probs to sort out too. I also had the same issue with the window motor & thought before I buy a s/h one i would take it out & have a look. The motor was working but the mechanism was jammed, i gave it a really good clean greased it all up & works perfect now. Give this a try before buying another one Simon

I really appreciate the responses guys, and thanks for welcoming me to the forum! Sounds like none of the issues are too serious, so I'll chip away at them one by one! All belts were changed at last service, except the cam belt which was changed 2 years and 20k miles ago so I guess it's still safe to assume another year with limited mileage. Sounds like pilot error with the roof so will try again one evening. Will be a while until it'll be warm enough for roof off action! Will post some pictures over the next few days after it's had a good clean and polish as it's very dirty after the 170 mile trip back with it this morning! Another question..... It has cross-spoke BBS alloys (plain silver one piece), were these an accessory upgrade or something that a previous owner has fitted? I much prefer the classic Fuch's but these are immaculate so will do for a while. Thais again for all your help.

Good to have you with us. I only joined recently but the advice I've had here has been great and will make ownership as stress free as possible. What part of the country are you ?

I live just south of Milton Keynes, not too far from Aylesbury, but work in London not too far from the Ace Cafe (not sure if there are any forum meets there?). Another quick question. The manual says 'premium petrol' for the 2.5 and 'premium unleaded petrol' for the Turbo. I hope that a high qctane super-unleaded will be ok but would like someone to confirm if that's ok?

welcome james. There is some excellent threads on here that will tell you all you need to know . You just need to be patient and wade through some. Re the roof. I think from memory that the ignition key needs to be in the Aux position ie not in start up position then the roof latches retract leaving the roof panel unlocked so you can remove it. Putting it back is the reverse process . Its been so long since I took mine out I've forgotten [:D]

95RON unleaded is fine for an '86 Lux. It quite literally wouldn't know what to do with anything higher.

Fen LIL's not speaking to you anymore [;)] Said she knows just doesn't want to show off like the gauche newer models.

That's just because she is female and they just assume more expensive is better even if they don't know why [;)][:D]

We were all there last night....[8|] 3rd Saturday of the month, see the Region 20 forum for details!

Thanks to everyone for your help! I now know how to remove the sunroof (I had the key in the wrong ignition position) (Cheers Peanut and Fred)[8|]. With regard to The Ace Cafe, I'll certainly be at the March meet, however I can't make the Feb meet as I'm away that weekend![:(] Someone asked if I could post a couple of pictures so here goes...... I'd be interested if anyone could shed some light on the wheels fitted (i.e. are they just random BBS wheels or were they an accessory fit? James

guess you must have missed my earlier post James [;)] glad you worked it out anyway

Sorry peanut, I did indeed miss that...... Interesting that you are from Somerset as that's where my 944 is from (near Wookey) so you may have seen it out and about! Again, sorry for that. James

quite possibly. In fact i am certain its the car I used to see every morning travelling down the Fosse way towards Yeovil Perhaps the owner worked in Yeovil Nick

thats the best history to have really. Better in my opinion than little use or lots of receipts. At least you know any problems are likely to have been sorted
