Just purchased an 81 SC .. a few questions...

Phil, I've heard much higher prices quoted for doing the sills/ b pillar joins. Who did the work for you?

Harv... sounds like a bargain! Fortune favours the brave...

Phil looks can be deceiving , my decent nikon is back with me on friday so this weekend i'll be taking a whole heap of pictures all over the car .
This will show that in truth there is more to making a car spot on than meets the first glance , Its now had a critical eye past over it from a friend who does some amazing resto work (the works ali bodied MGB they have just completed and a basket case S1 elan are simply stunning)
He has said that it could be done cheaply to turn a profit ,however whats really needed are panels removing and stuff going back to bare metal to get a truely stunning result .
This is likely to be somewhere around the 4k mark (thats not at normal retail rates belive me ) However this would have a pristine ,and back to original SC .
I just have to decide wether this is the way to go.
Its going to have a decent service at camtune , then i'll be twisting the arm of any surrey SC owners to start showing me round a few jobs on it , as what will most likely happen is we stick the tail on the rear deck as it looks currently messy (you'll see from the pics i do come the weekend ) run it through to the end of the year and then go for the bare metal job .
This will hopefully see a week by week picture update and between myself and hazel my other half i am sure we would be only to pleased to do a feature write up for you .

The other Halfs website http://www.hazelnet.org/index.htm already has a wealth of Lotus related stuff , and now i guess its time to move foward to the porsche fold , get out and about to a few meets and get this car up to scratch .
the last transformation job i did is featured on http://www.harvsport.com where the rebuild of my westfield racecar is featured ..... though unless i decide to carbon panel the inside of the SC this project should be cheaper .

The other aim is for the finished SC to go back to its homeland and at least have a few laps of the ring .

It seems like shes managed to start putting together some 911 stuff on the website (http://www.hazelnet.org/911/ ) god knows how much more webspace were going to need......... [8|]

Phil whats the blue ball ? ....... (no i am sure he didn't mean that !! )

Experienced with cars , i guess i have spent my time driving a few , In fact when i first moved to circuit racing i cut my teeth in a 3.2 carrera many years ago (and i'm still under 40 [;)]).

I am lucky enough to have an equally petrol headed better half so between us we have owned a few in our time although she can be forgiven for some of her colour choices

(though to be honest the pink stripes just were a step to far , i mean there were times when i had to actually drive it too)

If your looking for a good body shop and Chiswick (W4) is not too far for you then I can recommend a place which is great. He's a small outfit which has done a few Porsches and vintage cars. Mine will be having the engine bay done there over the next few weeks. Next year will have the rust removed and the outside done by him. Let me know if you want details.

Cheers

thanks for that , the guy i use has done 4 or 5 cars for me now so no worries there , but its always useful to know another ..... and yeah chiswick not far from me , in fact its 5 mins from my office.

Given you work out this way you may want the garage I use:
Xavier Autos - ph 02087412251
in Stamfordbrook Arches

They can point you in Kevin's (the paint guy) direction.

Cheers[:D]

one thing i noticed was that its obviously had the whale tail removed at some point as you can see the holes where it was fixed as they have been filled and badly painted , is it the preverbial hens teeth to find one to take the car back to its original spec?

As others have said, rear turbo spoiler was an option, but your car may be a Sport as it seems to have the front lip spoiler (my old SC was a Sport). In which case you'll have Bilsteins, which is good too (green, I think?)!

Funnily enough, I think it looks better now without the turbo rear spoiler (which is very heavy too!), although maybe you should remove the front lip spoiler, too. (And the badge at the back higher, of course).

Anyway, looks great and the best of luck with the renovation!

You are correct this appears as it was an SC sport , as it does indeed have green Bilsteins ,the lip spoiler and a turbo tail on ......

as much as i like the look of the cars without picnic table i want to actually make this as original as i can and as close to as was .....
Its in with Camtune at the moment sorting a few bits and having a service then after the sumer its going back to bare metal , so hopefully the story will unfold without me spending a fortune ....

the right money on the right bits should see a nice classic sc ..
