Just taken delivery of a 2013 Cayenne Diesel

Oh ok. From reading reviews the air suspension is supposed to be a very worthwhile upgrade in terms of comfort. Be interesting what you make of the difference if you drive one.

we test both, with AIR and with PASM, then drove the standard car.......we elected for the standard suspension as the ride and cornering are superb without any of the adjustable or air fed suspension. Now, we're a couple of months into ownership and still very happy with the ride quality, no regrets :)
 
colski1961, thanks for that, does your driving include heavily potholed roads or is it on better surfaces. I have read that the basic steel suspension can be harsh particularly in the rear.

That's why I changed to Air after my first car had steel. Quite a hard and bouncy ride in the rear. Having said that, I'Ve not tried the new gen car with steel. Living in the sticks, the ride with Air is good, even on Wiltshire's finest cart tracks. And of course i's great fir towing.
 
I've had two gen 2 diesel Cayennes and have covered a total of 54000 miles since June 2010, both on steel springs with PASM. A brilliant combination, which I generally leave in sport mode for enthusiastic driving. It really does handle well through the bends on cross country roads - non of the wallowly air suspension for me. Ok I can't raise the car when it gets really rough off road, but that's not been a real problem up to now, and I do use it for proper 4x4 duties. I did jump in a non PASM equiped Cayenne once and was really suprised how awful by comparison the handling was. The diesel Cayenne is a great vehicle which I will replace with another soon, but not sure I can wait for the 2014 facelift model to arrive.

I have a four month old diesel with the air suspension option. I think the description of "wallowy" is a long way from reality IHO. I'd describe the car as being as tight as a ducks backside in water around the corners of West Oxfordshires best, and very comfortable too. Granted, not quite in the same league as my 997 but significantly better than any competitor. My strong advice is to test both and choose the best option for your circumstances, especially if towing is a necessity. As with all things in life it's horses for courses.

I live in the middle of nowhere (Scottish Highlands) and have an unadopted (and unloved) road to my home....plenty of potholes. Not really had any issues with the standard steel suspension, my opinion, and indeed the standard ride compares well against the RR Sport we also tested (with air).
My view, for what it's worth, the standard suspension is fine....unless it's going to loosten up significantly over the next few months (only had the car since November).

Gentlemen (I assume the gender is correct for all, if not sorry!) thanks for the advice. I have now test driven a Cayenne with AIR and one with 21" wheels and steel suspension. The steel suspension was surprisingly compliant and very good. So I've order a diesel Cayenne with steel springs and PASM etc etc, for the April build.

Some interesting comments. After ten years of 4x4's we tried the lot two years ago, Merc, Porsche, Range Rover.....

Merc was average, Cayenne was huge disapointment coz I really wanted one but strangely we found it too car like(!) -superb in the snow around Guildford though -Range Rover simply awesome but concerned about reliability issues, image and cost!! And Land Rover spoilt us with off and on-road courses.....delivered a V8 Diseaseal to Stavanger so spent a bit of time in it and strangely wasn't disappointed when I got back into my trusty 200,000 mile Shogun..... -ended up with an Audi A6 Allroad (3.0BiTdi) as a family vehicle -nice to be in an understated Q-car again.....

Picked my Cayenne diesel up on first week of January, black metallic, air suspension, sports design kit ,twin tailpipes etc. Car looks great and drives great. The only problem i have is that my wife is all of 5 feet and getting in and out has resulted in the sill getting scuffed and i mean scuffed. I was cleaning the car yesterday and i have also noticed that my sill is also scuffed and i am 6 foot and very long legged and i a can step out with no problem but even my trousers just touching the sill seems to mark it. I also got the Superguard treatment prior to taking the car. I have talked to my OPC and in my opinion the sills are not fit for purpose and they are going to investigate. I have looked at different types of paint protection film application but will wait to see outcome with my OPC first, but only having the car 3 weeks and when the car has been cleaned the sills looks terrible.
Comparing the Cayenne to the X5 i had ??, fuel Consumption better, smoother ride with the air suspension but i really cannot sense any difference between normal and comfort setting modes in the Cayenne. The lower setting gives the car a great aggressive look. I really do miss the head up display that the X5 had and the rear view wing mirrors had slightly bigger view area, but really the Cayenne is another level.

Just some advise on cleaning the wheels, i specked the 21 " Turbo wheels . There is an awful lot of space between the inside of the wheel and the brakes which makes it easy to get your hand in with a sponge to clean the inside of the wheel. I did this yesterday and when doing this to the passenger side front wheel i received a very bad cut , almost cut the complete knuckle off. What happened was the backing plate behind the brake caliper has a razor like edge and if you can visualise my hand forcing sponge against inside of wheel and then coming in contact with the backplate. Really do not attempt to clean the inside of the wheels unless you are wearing proper gloves or else use a brush.
 
Reading all this with interest because we just ordered a Cayenne Diesel (non S) to replace the long suffering family X3.

I must be getting old now as never thought the day would come when I would consider owning a car which combined the words "Porsche" with "Diesel" [:D]

Anyway, one day with a demonstrator and we were completely sold ! It even has VTG [:D]

Can you get kerb proximity sensors for the wheels as this is going to be my wife's daily driver and you should see the wheels on her X3 [:eek:][:eek:]
