Ok so onto the last instalment. I installed the springs and bump stops etc..
Pictured below left you can see that the new struts are two inches shorter this meant I had to compress the springs a little. This was awkward and I had to improvise as although I have spring compressors they don't work well on this type of loosely coiled spring. What you really need is a proper strut spring compressor (below right).
I was concerned the ride height may be different although these Bilsteins are direct replacements for standard suspension. My fears were unfounded though as the longer standard struts have more "sag".
Fitting the hubs and...….. mounting in car
The differential seal was next …….
I had to wait for this part so re-installed the engine/transmission while I waited. Its not to big a task as the drive-shaft was already out. The drive flange comes out easily after removing the centre bolt.
The drive-shaft nuts have a high torque setting. Luckily I have a very large torque wrench that I bought previously for the same job on my 964.
The work is now complete. I took the car for a snagging run and this resulted in some warning lights appertaining to the PSM and steering angle. I had to re-adjust the steering shaft position slightly to eliminate the steering angle sensor warning light that popped up and clean/re-connect the ABS sensors causing the PSM waring light. Quite intense at times but all is now well. I just need to take it in for wheel alignment ASAP. I hope you all found this thread of interest.
