Kumho V70's on a '73 stock 911?

Paul:
I've asked the same question about a week ago. The details are not on the organising clubs web site yet, but go to www.breaconmotorclub.co.uk and you will find some links which had nothing attached for 2008 a week ago.

I am sure that it is in May, but they are doing 2 this year as the first one last year was very popular.

It is GREAT hillclimb and absolutly facinating to run. Lots of tight bends, steep gradients and the longest finishing straight you have ever run until you get to the 90 right right at the end of it. Interesting at 110mph (speed of the Impreza last year) and you can't see it untill you arrive. BRAKES!

I will do it in the Impreza this time again, the only event I will do in the car this year but on Kumhos and not Avon slicks.
Some of the classes are a bit mixed, but you will have lots of competition where ever you go.

Great event and not to be missed at all.
If you have trouble, contact me as i know an 'insider' there. [;)]

911Hillclimber

I have started to 'mod' my car but not in the power department as yet.

I have posted lots over on DDK (see Highfield) and had my car in Porsche Post with a couple of project write-ups last year.

Ian

Way back in 19991 i started to mod my 911 for hillclimbs, starting with the chassis and the 2.22T/webers it came with , but 130 bhp soon becomes tiresome!

However, with the chassis right (I think) I added a 2.4E on mech inj (what an engine) and the car was very much faster; that 50 bhp increase and torques makes such a difference.

The engine gave way to a 3.2 Carrea with a Bob Watson chip/early exhaust etc, but about 240 bhp on a good day.

However the torque increase was just great, so was the easy starting and economy! The only bit I miss with the 3.2 is the 6000 rpm limit, far too low.

Some questions for you sir

1/ Do you have to run a full cage or is a half cage OK for hillclimbs?

2/ What weight have you got the car down to?

3/ What mods have you made to get the chassis right?

4/ What's your springing and arb rates like - do you run stiff springs and soft arb, or soft spring and stiff arb, or stiff stiff, or soft soft?

5/ What ride height are you running?

Ian.

PS you'll understand why I am asking the questions when you read the next register report in the magazine.

In the class I run you have to have a 6 point cage minimum, but having hit a big tree at the top of Shelsley Walsh some years ago, no race car should be without a cage...in my opinion.

The chassis has 3 litre Turbo rear torsion bars and 2.7 Caraera roll bar, stock front torsion bars and 10mm (I think) through body front anti roll bar. Turbo rack.

Bilstein dampers from Bob Watson a zillion years ago.

Rear arms are 3.2 alloy and the rear has poly bushes everywhere. The front did have spherical top mounts and poly bushes but were sold to Ian McMath and another and replaced with stock rubber bushed arms.
The ride height is set to get the jack under the front cross member!

At the invitation of those on here I will do a few reports on my 2008 Retro Hillclimb Season starting with the full spec of the car and how my year unravels!

Pity you can only post single pics/entry and no video shots...

I took the car for a first drive in ages on the fresh Kumho's and brakes and it all came flooding back and why I kept this fab Bitza over the years. Could have sold it several times over.

Bought it in 1988, so 20 years as a family member [:)]

Is that 'sad'?

No, I'm very very lucky.

Only one picture :-(

You can load lots of pictures and video I believe up to photobucket or similar and then just put a link from the posting to that site.

Would like to see more of the car and the detail on the perparation.

Ian

OK...think i can do that...I use tinypics for stills on Scoobynet forum where I can (individually) load stacks of stills and you just click on them to 'open' the picture. Dropshots for the vids. I do lots of 10 seconds vid at hillclimbs which are great to see how the car behaves (and for the ego!)

I'll start a simple thread here soon as the first practice day is at Easter at Loton Park, my motorclubs own hillclimb venue, but start with my very simple Bitza's spec.
