Kumo tyres

Anybody on these?

Only £60 (245/45R 16W) each, but will they grip in the wet?

My tyres have half the tread left but spin as soon as the turbo kicks in (first 3 gears)

Will a cheap tyre with loads of tread be better than a half worn more expensive one?

I have used these for years on my 944T and found them to be ok.
Probably in back to back test with mainstream tyres they would compare badly but grip seems ok and they last well.
Porsche centres always remind me they are not porsche approved - you pays yer money and makes your choice !!
 
That's a prime example of OPC talking bull - are there any "approved" tyres from 1986-1991 still available? I doubt it. How can a car built, far less designed, over 12 years ago require tyres currently approved by Porsche? Any road tyre of the correct size and rating legally sold in the EU (so meeting the relevant standards for tyres) will be at least as good as the best that was available in the early 80's when the 951 was designed. Then again the "technician" (read diagnostic tool reader and parts fitter these days) was quite possibly not even born back then.
 
I have symex (I had not heard of them either) on the rear at the moment.

I suppose I wont know what others are like until I fit them but if they are any worse in the wet (OK dry) I would have to bin them.

The WANLI on the front seem OK!!!!!

I have Maxxis on the back of Beaky at the moment. I got a little bit conned as I thought I was getting Dunlop Maxx tyres. "Well I never said they were Dunlops" said the tyre man when questioned subsequently, "You said Dunlops and I thought you knew what you were talking about. I think they are a second stream tyre made by Dunlop".

I was pretty cheesed off generaly after I had spotted his spotty oik about the try and lift the car with a trolley jack under the transaxel [:mad:] but stopped him befor he wrecked it.

As the tyres are now on, cheap and legal (and I don't want people who indulge in personal pleasure getting near my car again) I have decided to leave them on for the winter. The supplier has offered to change them for a known brand at the cost difference in fairness to them.

The tread blocks are so tall that the tyres must get squirmy when hot, but they give more grip then my old, almost bald, Contis in the wet. The plus side now is that any wheel spin can be enjoyed all the more as I know that I am dispossing of a naff set of tyres.

Thats how the garage i use lift the car (unless they are using there hydralic lift.)

Well it's not a Porsche prescribed jacking point.

In the good old days of Ford live axels I wouldn't have an issue with lifting an Escort on the diff housing. Now, with independent rear suspension and the 944 transaxel, I wouldn't risk it myself. The diff housing/transaxel isn't a load bearing ellement when the car is on its wheels so why would it be designed to support 50% of the weight of the car for jacking purposes.

If jacking on the transaxel doesn't break it then I'm sure it is only by luck not design.
 
It specifically says in the handbook not to jack it by the transaxle if I recall.

I ended up having an argument with Micheldever Tyres once when they wanted to Jack my 944 up by the trollyjack under the transaxle method...[:mad:]

"The vehicle should never, under any circumstances, be jacked up from under the oil sump or gearbox, as this could cause severe damage."

Well, that about sums it up then.

Berg I've been on the Z rated Kumho Ecsta 712's in that size since the summer. They were £75 inc fully fitted and I'm very happy after about 5000 miles including a trip to the Nurburgring. Wet or dry they seem fine to me on the road, and they don't spin under the conditions you describe. I've only used them on track at the Nurburgring and they got a bit squealy and squirelly after 3 laps (12 miles a lap IIRC)
