LED locks

I have noticed that the factory fitted alarms come with an LED on the door cap lock (if that makes sense). I have an after market alarm and the LEDs have been drilled into the door caps.
I intend to change the door caps and wondered if it was possible to buy after market LED locks. Anyone got any ideas?
Maybe I'll post a wanted ad.
 
By the door caps, do you mean the plastic along the top of the door, on the inside.
I assume that you won't change the lock mechanism, just the flashing LED ?

If so, replacement LEDs are available. Just post the answers, so I know which type you might need.
 
HI Brian, a couple of weeks ago i had in my hands a pair of look button from a later 911 and they have a the leds built in, they unscrew from the connecting rod as all the other ones do. you can get lock buttons with built in leds as i have seen them in connourseir shops ( if you can't find one i will give you they number, just put a post up). on the porsche ones i belive they get power from a small voltage that runs in a circule around the button, how i don't understand.

Hi all,

I have a 1987, 911 3.2 carrera, mine also has or I think it has the factory installed alarm installed on it, its activated by a key which can only be accessed from opening the door, its near the lock mechanism - just below window level on the side of the drivers door.

But, I do not have the LED ?.

I have blue door cappings - the trim above the door panel which is generally plastic but was a leather option. I have a small crack in one of the door cappings so I have decided to replace them - only available from OPC.
I would rather not drill holes in the new ones to put the retro-fitted flashing LEDs in and thought I would use the factory LED buttons instead. There is a Connourseir shop in Dunstable so I may take a look at their offering.

Has anyone done a similar swap?
 
HI Brian, i have leather cappings on mine and its good th here that someone nows that it was an option, most people say i have had them recoverd which i have'nt. what i did on mine about 8 yeays ago was took of the door panel then disconnected the two buttons from the locking knob, bought two led lights and wired them together (soliederd them and got some heatshrink tubing from a model shop) fed the wires into the door and atteched the led in the apperture where the buttons went, you don't need to drill or cause any other damage to your car. the only thing you have to remember is that you cheack your doors are locked when you get out as you no longer have a visual button to see if its up or not. the reason i had a pair of buttons a few weeks ago was that i put my car in concours at eynsham so took them out for originality and fitted the old ones back in.. if you are intrested in the leds that i took out (they fitted perfact and flush with the door, if i have still got them you can have them) post back and they yours.

I hadn't considered removing the buttons and replacing them with LEDs. Thanks for your offer, I shall think about it.

I spoke to Southbound trimmers with regard to the door cappings and they offered to cover them in a matching leather. The will be at the Husborne Crawley auto jumble this week so I shall discuss the costs with them - it may be cheaper than buying replacement cappings from an OPC.
 
hi again Brian, the leather door tops do look good but are hard to keep clean /looking good as is the dash top in leather. You say that you are going to an autojumble at the weekend, could you please tell me where this is as i might go along (if the wife has no DIY plans).

My car has the buttons removed, and also the link from the rotary control to the lock (if you break the window, then you still can't undo the door - this was before the Pentagon film was fitted).

The buttons were replaced, by my local ICE/Alarm/A-C place, by a sort of flat gromet, which is black and sits flush with the door capping (looks better than it sounds), with a 5mm LED fitted. As my car is dark blue, I changed the red LED for a flashing blue one in each door; not sure yet if I like it, but time will tell.

Maplin do the LEDs (and the gromet ?).

Not yet, I am still investigating anodising companies nearby. If they can do them (colour coded ?), I will try to get them off. Mind you, only having one car makes location a bit limited.
 
Flashing LEDs were only standard in the door pins for the 3.2 in the 1989 Model Year.

They get their power from an inductive loop which goes around the pin; there is no wiring going to the pin holding the LED.

Some people claim that they can hear a very faint chirp when the LED flashes but it has never bothered me.

why would you be seating in the car when the LEDs are flashing, i yake it they only flash when the alarm is set.

Odd that they would run wires to the induction loop (quite a bit of power needed to illuminate LEDS this way, as they takes 10/20 mA to work bright enough), which must be right next/around the pin (too much power needed, otherwise), and not to the LEDs themselves.

You're both right sort of. The leds flash as soon as you lock the doors, alarm doesn't need to be set. Agreed unusual to be driving around with doors locked, but certainly if I'm driving around dodgy parts of London late at night I tend to lock my doors - car jacking at traffic lights is becoming all too common ! Just call me paranoid !

There is a slight chirping noise when the leds flash - took me a while to figure out where it was coming from ! Not too intrusive, just turn the volume on the stereo up a bit !

I dont know if this is any good to you but i recently found these door pins with flashing LED lights. They are made by a company called Richbrook and it appears they only come in silver with a blue or red flashing light but they do a fitment for porsches.....

hi jamie, agree with you about locking your doors at time, i have mine locked most of the time and not just in the porsche. i did;nt realise that the alarm had to set first.

I can't lock the doors using the rotary knob, yes, but I can by using the central locking switch on the centre console. Of course, I forget, turn the ignition off, and try to open the doors !

I tend to lock the doors whilst driving around London, and generally if I am by myself in the car.

My flashing blue LEDs are wired to the ignition, so come on when the ignition is off, whether the alarm is on of off, or the doors locked, so it always looks like the alarm is on.
 
hi joun, used to have mine so there came on with the igntion off but put back to normal when i put car into concours at eynsham. my car is an 1984, i take it that yours is a 86 onwards model?. if any one wants to wire there LEDs to come on when ignation is off and out when on please post and i will explain.
