LED locks

Hi, I have flashing LEDs on my 1988 Carrera but the LEDs flash with the ignition on or off. Can you advise on how to get them to flash only when the ignition is off. Thanks

The simple thing to do is to wire them to the ignition contact that is live when the ignition is off - this will be a grey wire coming from the ignition switch. This wire is live ONLY when the ignition is off.

I have installed a 20 sec delay circuit powered from this wire, which illuminates a LED above my ignition switch as a result of the door(s) being opened - at least I can see the switch in the dark, to put the key in ! (Blue LED, of course, as my 'alarm' LEDs are blue, as is the car).

Hi guys,

Just been re-reading this thread as a result of my queries re: central locking, and also my alarm / immobiliser queries re: insurance.

Steh mentioned 'I assume yours (John) is an 86 onwards' - I presume this was in response to the statement about the central locking button in the centre console.

I do not have one of these buttons, so therefore assume I do not have central locking, but my car is an 1986 ! Do I assume central locking was perhaps an option ?

I would like to perhaps retro fit central locking and an LED in the button, but am hopeless with electrics, so any suggestions / help would be much appreciated.

Yes, mine is an 87 car, complete with central locking button. I also think that my 85 had it as well, but can't remember.

I am not too bad with car electrics (the mechanical bits are a bit of a nightmare to me - I know what goes where, but don't have the inclination to find out if I am right !), so I will help if I can.

Email me, then we can talk on the 'phone etc. I may not be able to help, but at least I have the Bentley book for our cars, and can give some advice/physical help, as needs be.

hi Highfield, i was talking about the centre concel button to use for the locks. my car is an 84 year and does not have them. i have a friend that has a later car and i use that sometimes in the summer as its a cab and find the light is very bright and i normally put a cloth over the concel. john, do you find the light to be a bit over the top on brightness?

john, do you find the light to be a bit over the top on brightness?

No, I generally don't notice it (out of line of sight). So much so, that I tend to not unlock before I turn the ignition off, when it no longer works.
I also don't notice my rear demister light either, even after I switched it with the hazard warning light to make it more visible. I suppose that I just don't look down below the speedo - I have no need to.

Thanks for the offer John.

Am intending to get hold of the Bentley book (Xmas pressie idea perhaps!).

Could someone post a picture of the central locking button, as my centre console (the one with the heater control and handbrake) does not have one.

What parts would I need to upgrade to central locking - i.e. doorlock motor, console switch etc. Of course I then need to find a source for them.

John - I am not too bad on mechanics, although it is a long time since I did any, but have never liked electrics.
