Lets make some noise (exhaust system discussion thread)

JZM aren't able to fabricate the plate, but agreed that this would fix the problem.

Anybody know where I can get this done?

Colin, If you're removing the exchanger and de-cat anyway, maybe you can take it along (assembled up as one item) to a recommended fabricator who should with reasonable skill be able to make good and return exactly as was - but new! Used to manage MIG/TiG/ARC welding shops years ago in another life and would give it a go myself. If you take some key coordinate measurements (assembled) and make sure the fabricator follows those... What d'ya reckon?

Chaps, it's actually done best on the car because of the tolerance of getting the cat/de-cat to mate between the exchanger and the primary. There's not a lot of give in the system.

You can see in the pics that the new flange is thicker than the old one (it was made from 10 mm plate). This is to allow the exchanger to be cut behind the old flange but the distance to the mating face of the flange remains the same when it is welded on.

Colin, mine was done by Unit 11, Warrington (it was used as the test mule for the fix so to speak). I'll try and find out who does the same job down South. In the mean time, I would suggest asking Ken at Nine Excellence.....he's been working on a lot of 964s this year and is introducing some of his own exhaust parts for them. No doubt he will have already come across this problem.

Colin, I put a thread on Rennlist for you about the repair. Here it is:

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/964-forum/770245-uk-heat-exchanger-repair.html

You'll see that I was right about Ken at 9e being able to do it for you.

On the way back from JZM I gave it some beans to overtake a dwardler in 2nd & it's blown the pipe off the plate. So now the exhaust is blowing straight through.

I'm supposed to be off to the South of France on Friday so it looks like I'm going to have to take the Mondeo now. Nine Excellence would need a week or so as they have to take it off & send it away to their exhaust fabricator & the guy in Birmingham sucked through his teeth a lot & wouldn't commit to being even able to repair it without seeing it first & he's full up next week anyway.

The only possibility now is finding a 2nd hand NS heat exchanger on fleabay & getting someone local to fit it.

The other alternative is to drive up here. If you look at the Rennlist thread, Colin at Ninemeister has just offered to do it too.

Just tried to call but there doesn't seem to be anyone there today. [&o] I can't see anyway I could get up there this week anyway.

I've got Douglas Valley Breakers looking for one for me right now

NineX in Maidenhead, a 10 minute walk from my home, have said they can sort me out one way or the other this week.

They didn't cover themselves in glory the last time I used them but I'm desperate & I know that a lot of people on here do speak highly of them.

Really feel for you Colin... been so close to disaster just before a France trip perfect for the car. It'll all come good I know, it has to and will... Worst case, can you 'borrow' one?

Marcus
