Lighter Faster Cayman

I want a seam welded 964RS 2011 Caymen. OK, maybe the new shells don't need it, but this car should be capable of pulling well over 1.5g lateral with serious tyres, --- it will be very interesting to see how serious Porsche are with this. I have a letter of intent in on one. It will have to be either a very well priced 968CS type car (for fun road and some track), or a real tour de force. It could, seriously, be the best car Porsche have ever made. Porsche Leeds have yet to contact me --- but any deposit will require a serious spec ---
 
Just had another call, no more info as yet [:(], they expect to have info to Configure it by November with build slots 1st 1/4 2011. He also confirmed they didnt get the Speedster info in their interal systems before it appeared on the piblic site [:-]
 
Hi All, first post for me, although I have been enjoying reading through some of the threads. Loads of great info on the site so thanks for the great resource! I'm about to order a new Cayman S and this thread has stopped me in my tracks! Not sure now if I should wait for the Club Sport... the car will be used most of the time (about 12k miles pa). I'm not looking to do track days, just a fun car to drive on the roads, holidays, occassional business use. Would appreciate any views from those who know the standard Cayman S to help me decide. Thanks :) N PS: If this is thread drift, please just shout and I'll move it to a new thread :)
 
Welcome to the debate [:D] I think you make a very good point. The original 968CS has never been a great collectible because it was never intended to be manufactured in limited numbers (though it was) and it didn't quite have the 911RS halo, but it was great value at the time --- possibly because it had to compete with a very attractive and well specced Mazda RX7 --- and partly becasue it was at the end of the 968 life and Porsche could do it. On the other hand the 9113.2CS has also been an interesting car but always second in line to the RS' As a lightweight road car, for me, the Boxster Steedster could be nearer to the optimum tactility and Fun factor. Caymen, has surely got to be significantly more sporting than this, but maybe not to 964RS retro spec !! Which could mean that in the joy of ownership and long term value stakes, a carefully chosen secondhand GT3 could be a better choice than a new Caymen. But this is for Porsche to decide .. and IMHO !
 
Chris, Thanks for the reply - I went for the Cayman S in the end as I'm keen to get a car to replace my company one asap. My first Porsche and I can't wait!! N

Yes it is about the dynamics but its not as if they couldn't also provide more horsepower. It will be interesting to see how Porsche continues to play the numbers game with the Cayman and Boxster. (This is not a slur on Porsche. I'm a BIG Porsche fan). They no longer have much 'time' to play with. The base Carrera and Cayman S are only separated by fractions of a second (i'm not talking about lap times. I haven't checked those). It is not as if people buy a Carrera because they feel a Cayman S is 0.1 seconds too slow. They buy a Carrera because they want the iconic 911 or they prefer the shape or the driving characteristic of the rear mounted engine or they want 4 seats or whatever. Porsche should stick the base Carrera engine in the Cayman S and accept that people will still choose a Carrera on its merits (and no doubt they can still charge a premium for it because the 911 is iconic. Ferrari drivers pay a £50K premium over an equivalent Porsche not because it is £50K more car). I'd like to see the driving dynamics achieved by the Cayman Club Sport (and will no doubt own one in the future for that alone) but I dont think 345 bhp is too much to ask to go along with it [:D]. I think the Carrera and Cayman S are already close enough to allow them to overlap without trying to say, "we can only get the Cayman to go that fast by shaving weight and having a more track tuned suspension".The Carrera S can be moved up to the 408bhp of the X51 Powerkit as standard (as is now standard in the Carrera GTS) which will keep it (justifiably, rather than just by product placement) differentiated from the Cayman S. Hope Porsche makes my wish come true [:D] I think if the next generation Cayman is even 0.1s quicker than the current one (before adding PDK & launch control which make it quicker still), Porsche will need to think about how the Carrera and all the other models up to the GT3 shuffle up anyway but they are running out of space ('time') to shuffle them all within, so I think there is going to have to be some overlap at the bottom..
 
All goods points Cecil. Bottom line is they'll do as little as they can to sell them, which I think will be quite a bit keeping in mind the global Spyder sales and the "unloved" status of the Cymn [;)]
