Linen leather

OK, i'm confused ! I need to redye my seats and revitalise them
Linen leather for 944. I beleive there are 3 official variations -

White Linen (the one i want !)
Linen / grey / mushroom
and light grey.

I have bought linen(LQ) from dynamix dyes and its come back a light greyish colour. Mines a bit more lighter and yellow.
Where the heck sells this white linen dye ?!

Theres only one linen. Move forward 10-20+ years from when the cars were new and people have started to make up their own names for things.

People incorrectly call the mushroomy colour available in '86, '87 and '88 model year cars 'Linen'. Porsche called it Light Grey but its commonly referred to a Grey-Beige to help avoid confusion. The similar, but different, colour available in series one cars was similar, but different. [:D]

If its any concolation I recently took a linen cassette box lid out out of storage, where it had been since 1993, when it was three years old. I compared it to a set of Grey-Beige leather seats that I have out of a 1986 Turbo and you couldnt tell the difference, even in strong sunlight.

Linen used to be a far lighter and more pleasant colour, but even unused Linen parts seem to have weathered and darkened now, and the colour difference can be extremely small (which may have helped cause the confusion amongst newer owners).

Hmm, Ok. So the linen sample pot is wrong as it more a grey beige colour....Think i'm going to have to ring up and confirm on Monday. I know I have linen as it says in the car 'birth certificate'.

I would suggest you send a small sample from behind the hinge cover plates as this will be the nearest colour match possible.
All leather changes with age and also with what products have been used on the leather.I have seen linen vary from near white to a yellowy/mushroom colour.
If you want to do a full refurbishment and restoration have a look at a posting I did re:leather care & colour restoration , it gives a step by step guide.
If you want to send me some pics I can have a look for you.

FWIW, I bought some Linen dye that is from Woolies recently and re-sprayed my seats with it. I am confident the dye is the same colour (compared it with a hidden bit, just as you are doing) but putting it on the seats highlighted how much they had changed with time.

FWIW, it's an easy and very satisfying job and the end results are a GREAT improvement. I'd have posted pictures of my own experience but others have already done better versions.

is the red 944 your car ? if so looks like you have cloth script seats which use vinyl not leather for bolsters and back.
Leather dye will not work.

thanks for clearing that up about the seats . for interest in reply to Oli depends on the type , if it is a ' paint ' yes it will sit on the surface , and wear off quickly.I use water based dyes which need the leather surface to be prepared and open to allow the dye to soak into the leather ( as origional leather manufacturing process) and give a longer lasting finish and a softer feel. Many of the products available give a hard surface finish which feel hard , plasticy and crack and craze .Dynamix dyes require the surface to be prepared and you can't do this with vinyl. It maybe possible to use with a primer to aid adhesion. Also note that most leather dyes/paints available to the public have a finish mixed with the dye and hence a weaker product. Many are infact paints and not dyes.

Just clear up some confusion - The cloth seats are going, and the new leather ones are going in. The Linen colour I have is too grey and it doesn't match the rest of the interior in the car!

Dave, your problem is due to one of the following: i] the supplier has matched a peice of trim which has weathered differently to yours and now supplies this as Linen ii] the manufacturer has made the mistake with regards to colours that I described earlier, taking what may have been an accurate sample of Grey-Beige or similar and entering this in their range as 'Linen'.

Dave , speak to Dynamix and send a piece of the fresh leather as I suggested from behind theseat backs hinge cover plates if that is the colour the rest of your car is.Seats will change in colour far more than other areas of trim ie:door cards etc.You may have to do the whole lot to get a colour match.

I used the dynamix dye to restore my linen seats - I thought they turned out pretty well

They had been re-dyed previously with something that definitely wasn't linen.

Yes, that looks to be the same problem I have. The new colour is much whiter and cleaner looking. Did you send in a sample for them to mix ?

No - the seats had been dyed with a grey colour (first pic) that wasn't correct.

The second pic shows the new colour which was much closer to the vinyl on the seats, and a better match for the original color that I uncovered when i stripped the grey dye off.

Do you know if your seats have been coloured before?

oh i see. Yes i think my fronts have, not sure about the rears although the new dye colour is the same on both.
Maybe i should try with the leather prep first, but it still looks very grey in the bottle.

Mine is the dynamix standard Linen colour so I'm sure it will be OK - it looked darker in the bottle than when it is sprayed on & dry.

You need to take off the dye anyway to see what's underneath & to fill any holes / cracks - the flexible leather filler stuff is excellent.
