Liners and pistons

Kevin gave me a lot of tips today and in fact the last time I popped down almost a year ago he and Alex gave me some good advise, which I believe was along the line of "don't do an engine swap, sell your 2.7 and buy one of our S2s, otherwise it'll be a f***ing ball ache".

They weren't wrong! I'm still cutting it fine for the start of the season but knowing I'll have the block back in a week will be a massive help!

Hows it coming on Pete? Not given up, I hope?

Hi Simon.. hope you are well...it's not so much giving up as other things have taken over my time and money, if you remember my quandary in deciding whether to continue with the car or getting back to my other interest ie live steam locomotive's, I won't live forever and even now I have at least 8 years work to go on the larger loco. I'm afraid the car lost out in that round, the good news is that I have completed one loco which has been steamed and have made very good progress on my much larger one.

I'm not sure what to do about the car, guess I'm getting older and a little wiser about money, plus it can't carry my loco's...:} There's an awful lot of money tied up in the car, the block alone that's still looking lovely sitting in my workshop set me back £4.5k in parts and re-boring costs, not to mention all of the associated parts that she has been developed around over the years.

I'll have to make a decision about her soon as it's not doing her any good sitting around, if I won the lottery I'd certainly get her finished, don't need a new performance car, she's pretty good and I've driven some exotic machinery over the years that can't match her, failing that I may have to seriously consider passing her on to a new home.. just not been able to bring myself to do it yet..... we shall see...:)

Pete

All very reasonable arguments Pete, but itd be a shame to see such a developed and lovely car abandoned or even dismantled.

intresting thread ! I have an s2 and also a spare engine both with scuffed bores on no2 cylinder and looking for a solution

I spoken to capricorn and a few others and all Ive found so far is expensive solutions

Ive been waiting to try and find another block thats in good condition but it would have to be group 1 lol
to go with the pistons etc I have ,or a complete bottom end in good condition

Id be interested to hear too, as I have heard from a number of sources that they/he are difficult to deal with and reluctant to supply to new customers.

I exchanged a few interesting messages with JME and when I finally chose one of the camshaft profiles he had suggested to me he went all silent and never replied to me anymore.
Some people joked that he would sell you a camshaft only if the moons and stars aligned in a particular way, have to say this seems pretty accurate.

He is an interesting character for sure. I did manage to get a cam out of him in the end but it was not easy and he never communicated with me once I bought the cam when I asked a couple more questions!

my spare engine I bought cheap off ebay(the one with scuffed no2 bore) is going to have to find a new home if anyones intrested

Picked up the steel lined block, JE Pistons and Carrillo rods this evening from EMC.

The block looks superb and will hopefully give many years of use. Kevin mentioned he took the head off an S2 recently that he had steel lined 6 seasons ago, and on inspection there was no signs of wear on the bores, so yes although it's a very expensive process and not economical for the average road going S2, for serious track or race it's one of the most effective ways of building a strong, long lasting engine.

Engine should be rebuilt within the next few weeks, can't wait to get the car back up and running!

Cams arrived back from Piper today, they look good, time will tell if they make a difference or not.

Sneak peak at the new paint job in progress, pre lacquer:

Looking good.

Can you post some pics of the blocks showing liners installed? How much was it for all the work on the block, if you don't mind me asking?

To have the liners installed was £1200.

Block is all masked up at the moment whilst the lacquer cures and then it's straight off to the engine builder for a couple of mods, but I'll take some more pics as the build progresses.

The sleeves look the same as most other sleeved S2 blocks to be honest, there's some pics on the EMC website that look very similar.
