Live Re-map...The Results!

You may recall my thread a week or two back about whether to go for a Live-remap or not and I decided I would - Wayne Schofield of Chip Wizrdas, he of 9M fame worked his magic on my car yesterday and I thoght you may like to know the outcome - was far more interesting than I ever imagined.

1) Wayne thought the car wasn't running perfectly before he even started a dyno run. He said that only the day before he had had a 964RS which seemed to be just a bit off beat too and that had turned out to have had the ignition leads crossed over on a couple of the plugs meaning that one or two cylinders were only actually sparking on one plug each. An dguess what - mine too!
Thank You very much OPC Leeds for serviceing my car 3 months ago and not putting it back together in the right order. Strasse will get every service from now on. Unfortunaltely he corrected the mistake before doping a dyno run so I will never know the handicap this was causing.

2) There was a flat spot just before the top of the power curve before he started his jiggery pokery and after an hour of said jiggery pokery it still wouldn't budge. He figured out that the varioram was adjusting fine at it's first point further down the rev range but being a bit lazy higher up. A few taps on the keyboard later (thats what it seemed to me anyway but I am sure there was more to it than that) and the varioram ajustment point was moved ever so slightly so that it worked a treat - you could see the difference on the dyno immediately.

3) Wayne then does his before and after dyno runs so that they are back to back and the intervening couple of hours doesn't affect the readings (change in temperature etc). You get a true reading.

4) The results on paper.......

BEFORE - 278bhp @ 6270 rpm. 261 lbft (I thought this very good) @ 5320rpm

AFTER - 305bhp @ 6260 rpm, 282 lbft @ 4750 rpm

5) The results on the road......

Wow, I thought the car was marvellous before but the in gear pick up is astonishing. It is far far smoother (no doubt helped partly by rectifying JCT 600's little cock up). I cannot get over the difference. What I previously thought was great seems agricultural.

This cost £411. I am not on Wayne's payroll and hadn't met him beforre yesterday so when I say it's worth twice that amount - it is. (However, he should get himself a bit more organised, he needs a PA. My appointment was for 1pm and he started my car at 5pm but then put over 2.5 hours in to getting it right so I forgave him).

One very happy chappy.[:)]

That's quite a difference !! No wonder it felt so good on the road, especially the increased torque much lower down. Nice one.

Hi Lee

Sounds like a good result [:)]

You don't happen to have an Air/Fuel ratio / λ output do you?

I would be interested in comparing it to mine from Weltmeister

Cheers

Pete

Good to see you've got a cracking result! Wayne does seem to have a good reputation and not only in Porsche circles. The only problem comes when you get used to your new found power - that's the start of the very slippery tuning slope.............[;)][:D]

Regards

Great result and looks like you have a cracking engine............

I only got 260 ft-lb torque out of a standard factory 3.8 RS..........which curiously is what they say it should have....dunno why Porsche went to all that trouble with the 3.8, when all you need to do is take your car to a rolling road.

Wayne is a Star............saw him do the same to a standard 993 while i was up there a couple of years back........same figs as quoted ..........downside finished my GT2 AT MIDNIGHT ........result was fantastic and the curve like a straight line off the paper ,no blips !

Wayne is a star - I'll second that! and he goes about his business in a no-nonense way that can easily understate the magic he can do with 993's.... and he's probably one of only a handful of people in the world who are doing it this way.

I was with Lee yesterday with my 4S and I came out a happy man with almost identical figures - it just took Wayne less time to do it on mine as my before run was 285.5bhp and my varioram was working fine..... just goes to show 1996 was the best year eh Lee? [;)]

The max bhp figure is flat from 5320 to the redline too!

The journey home was very entertaining!

Interesting, but also worrying from the swapped leads point if view; I wonder how many of us are driving around with plug leads in the wrong place.

Not sure but will check when I get home.

I ma hoping to resist the slippery slope to tuning nirvana but it certianly can become addictive[:D]

As for the RS torque figure - the RS is just motoring perfection and so much more than a power story. If you're too disappointed with your torque figure I'll swap your RS for my 2S tomorrow.

Vic, Wayne talked about a GT2 which he had gently tweaked. Said he had someone who wasn't after some 1000's of hp beast, just wanted a little hearer and a smoother delivery. I guess that was you? When did you have it done?

Lawrence, I bet there are loads of people with the same issue. Wayne had found it on 2 cars in 2 days. Apparently, there are two mistakes often made - because the plugs are so hard to see given their position, the ignition leads are often mixed up but the 2nd problem is even better - you can miss the plug altogether when attaching the ignition lead which can then get trapped in the gap beside the plug - it feels like you have it firmly attached to the plug bit it isn't even on it!

Either way, it would do know one any harm to double check either themselves or when they next had it in the dealers (independant not OPC I would suggest).

One very happy chap.

Pete I have just checked the printouts from Chip Wizards and I don't think so. However, I'm not sure what I am looking for so how would it appear on the printouts?

He did mine abt 3 years ago , its unusual in as much as its a twin plug head ,engine done in Germany with a few common sense mods , rods ,pump etc all uprated ...........its not for full on racing, so he just changed the injectors , remapped from scratch and got 551 bhp and 798 nm, could have gone up to 800 if with special gaskets and prepared for 30 hour rebuilds!!...............its the way he does it i like, completely fresh map no add on bits or plug in miracle chips .............hes done a couple more single plug GT2 s with adjustable boosts
Only downside for trackdays never look at mpg .........on the raod like a pussycat no prob.

Lee / Kenny,
Could you give me contact details for Wayne, ie, telephone and address.
Thanks.

I have them at work Kevin so I f Kenny doesn't reply first I'll get them you next week.

However, he should be in the phone book or directory enquiries under Chip Wizards, I think it's Milnrow near Rochdale, Wayne Schofield is his name.

Vic,

Twin plug heads! You could have had that bit of exotica straight out of the crate - just bought a normally aspirated 993. Still, doubt you'd get 551bhp out of one of those.

You wouldn't happen to be the chap who goes up to Croft from time to time and did the gumball rally this/last year would you? His GT2 had about 550hp - spit flames on the overun and sounded amazing.

Sorry not me , the car Wayne did was Auidi rs blue ,now gone to a guy in York , i now have a 993 GT2 Clubsport in Blutorange ! Wayne not had it , boring old single plug but still rather fun.................i think it swhat he does to the middle range on a car like urs thats so incredible ............

I don't have the full address - it's j21 m62 Rochdale. He has his own rolling road now and can do 4 wheel drive 993's by disconnecting the drive to front wheels.

Lee / Kenny, cheers gents, much appreciated. Was there an additional cost for disconnecting / reconnecting the drive?
