LMES Silverstone 13/14Aug

Hope I don't make a load of work for someone with this thought, but does anyone know how easy it is to arrange parking inside the circuit at this event? When I was up for the FIA-GT / WTCC round a few weeks ago there were 'BMW car club' and 'AM owners' (both having links to the main events) parked along behind the start grandstand. It's so much nicer and more convenient to have some reserved club parking inside the circuit rather than traipse in from the public parking areas, which seem to be getting further away (or is it me?).

I suspect this event will be very busy, with a lot of PCGB members spectating, is there any chance of organising a bit of space?

e-mail me if I can help - I'm not local but if it's phone calls, e-mails etc. I could probably help (that's better than just dumping the idea on the region [:)] )

thanks .........Phil

Hi

I used to organise the Coys festival presence for the Club and did dedicated parking for various endurance events. I have to say that each time it was a mega pain in the bum. It involved dishing out tickets on the gate, being there at 5.30am to rope of the space and goodness knows what else. The last time I did such an event was about 3 years ago so it may be better now but who knows!

Pete

Understood, I really don't want to create a whole load of hassle for someone else just for my selfish benefit (I'm sure the RO's and their teams have enough to do at this time of year) but thought I'd enquire about the chance. When you've parked half a mile away, and are carrying everything you'll need for a day out in the UK, it's a bit of a wind-up to walk past the other owners clubs who are adjacent to where it's happening.

Phil, Pete,

Someone just raised this point in R10 regarding the Classic Festival on 30/31 July. Phil, I guess there is no harm in asking. If it's the same hastle (and they should be clear about stating what would be expected) then we don't need to bother. That said, I do get the impression they are trying harder than they used to. Fancy giving them a bell?

I wish I had the time. I share Phil's sentiment being an endyrance racing nut and also expecting the Classic to be a good event but no can do this year from my side.

I've been in touch with Silverstone and they want to know approximate numbers and which days. Can anyone hazard a guess?

I'd say probably 15-20 cars on the Saturday (when the main race is on) maybe 8-12 on the Sunday. Does that feel about right from past experience? As an example, there were about 10 cars parked up at Shelsley Walsh recently. I'd expect this event to have much larger attendance by club members (no disrespect to the Speed Championship) but don't want to reserve a huge space only to be embarrased by a small turn-out.

I'm only around on the Saturday (and I've 120 miles of driving before I get there). I'm doing some leg work at the moment, but I think someone local will have to pick this up if it progresses. I don't want to land someone with the task, but there seems to be interest on the forum - hopefully there'll be somone to arrange the gazebo etc. should this be a workable plan.

As I said at the start I only have my selfish interests at heart really [:)] , but if I can do some planning from way down yonder in Sussex I'll do what I can.

Phil

note - see http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=125906) for Classic

I've booked our tickets for the weekend.
Don't forget if you book in advance you can get a free ticket for the F3 race later in the year (1 ticket per 2 weekend LMES tickets) see Silverstones website for details.

Success [:)] it looks like we have parking in the circuit for Porsche owners. I'm just tying up a couple of details but will post later with info.

Phil

Well, I've got it mostly sorted. Here's the deal. We have a space allocated which will take up to 40 cars. Silverstone will do tickets for each day (so if you're there all weekend you need a Saturday and a Sunday ticket). This will help spread the tickets around amongst those who are only attending on the Saturday or the Sunday.

I propose to get them to send the tickets to HQ to handle distribution - I hope that's OK. Who do I need to talk to (or should that be apologise to [&:] ) ?

You will need your normal race tickets purchased via the circuit. As far as I understand all these do is give you access to the enclosure. And the car you bring must be Porsche - don't turn up in something else and expect them to let you through.

What else needs doing? Can someone in the region bring along the flag/gazebo whatever?

Phil

Nearly sorted now, but not much time left [&:]

I've spoken to Robin Walker who will give this the official nod to HQ so that they can handle the parking passes. These are parking passes only, you must have your race tickets already.

Once Robin has cleared it with HQ one of us will post details of who to contact to get your passes mailed out. They will be be named passes for each day so if you're going for the weekend you'll need both days [8|]

Waiting to find out roughly were the area will be.

More info to follow.............Phil

Oh, by the way.... we really need someone on the ground to help out. Let me know if you can, please

(I did warn you at the start of the post that I was going to get so far and then land the rest of it on else someone didn't I [&:] [] [>:]....... sorry)

What sort of help do you need? I may be in a position to volunteer, but as usual my weekend time is somewhat short. I will only be able to attend on the Sunday anyway.

Thanks for the offer, I don't know really what help we might need.

I'm trying to find out from Silverstone what they provide and what we are expected to do. Anyone got experience of this? If we need to do too much but there's no-one available then I don't think it's worth advertising the passes because it won't happen. Will post as soon as I can find out more, but time's running out.

Phil

Going by what has happened in the past, at "normal" events (i.e. Not ones where the club is part of the display like last weekend's Classic), Silverstone allocate a space (behind the grandstands is useful...) and the cars park there. Nothing else. No organisers, no roped off area.

That's what has happened before, and I see various car-clubs doing this at races I go to. (Often thought "we used to do that -it was useful..." [:D])

Well done Phil!

That's exactly what i had in mind - nothing grand, nothing that's going to involve someone in very early mornings and hours of setting up. Just a place to park close to the action [:)]

Still not heard from Silverstone so I'll chase them (and Robin because he was going to clear this with HQ). Time's running out but I think we'll be OK.

Phil

Thanks Robin. Worringly, I still haven't heard from Silverstone so will phone as soon as they open to make sure everything is underway.

Phil

Another step forward. I've spoken to Jacalyn Moody at Silverstone who has sent the tickets to HQ.

We have a space outside the circuit behind the pit-straight grandstand (OK Mark ? [:)] ). There is no roping off of the area but they are concerned that we 'police' it to make sure the general public realise it's a Porsche only area. So it doesn't require a lot of management, but Jacalyn would like to meet up with someone who'll be there early in the day to show them the area. Now, that won't be me as I can't get there until 10:30-ish so if anyone will be able to attend from, say 8:30, please post and I'll give you Jacalyn's contact details.

If we have the flag/gazebo it might help to identify the area and set the boundaries so that we don't have (in her words) a Ford Fiesta in the middle of the line []

Nearly there.....

Robin, do you know who we send our requests to at HQ?

PS - there's a provisional timetable on the Silverstone website now. Check here
