London to Glasgow (First Drive of a 944)....

I bought a Golf GTI using the same logic when I had my S2 cab. I used it for 5 months and I even had a spreadsheet showing me how I saved £90 a month by using it to get to work. Thr touble was I stopped using the S2 as it was at the top of the drive and we had to do the "Butterflies" thing to get it out and it was not doing the car any good to sit around so I started to use it every day again. I stopped at 192,500 when I sold it.

I have to play that game as well, but its worth it to get back in a proper saddle!!
 
Oh Yes, regular use is best! If I lay mine up instead of taking it to France with me, the pressure balance cans on the fuel rail stick after a month or two of standing, with petrol pissing everywhere on startup, and me banging the (usually) inlet side can with a spanner!She always starts on the button though.

just an observation, not trying to hijack this thread.
 
The question of how much to use our 944s is a subject currently close to my heart since I need a car that I can commute in a put my three young kids in as well (which I can't find car seats to fit the back of the 944) therefore my choice is either to sell the 944 and get something like an E46 330 Ci, or else keep the Porsche as a weekend plaything and put the miles on something exciting like a Saxo (hooray [:'(]). Whilst the latter option appeals to my heart, my head tells me that will have a whole load of new problems associated with it. So, the question is, how many people here still use their 944s as daily drivers (given that these things are not getting any younger) and how many people have them as second or even third cars? I would post a poll on this subject, but don't appear to have the necessary privileges. Also, what sort of mileage are people now putting on their 944s per year - even with my commute I have only put on 11k since buying the car in May '05.

Why not keep it and buy something better value than a 330ci but not as crap as a Saxo? I'd suggest something like an e39 saloon with a petrol engine for example as they can be had quite cheaply at a high spec, will be quite good to drive and won't fall apart on you. Running costs should be similar to a 944, so provided you can cope with the extra insurance and tax you'd be onto a winner.

I work in central Glasgow but actually live out in Stirlingshire. I also spend a lot of time "up north" (Fort William way) - which is really why I bought the car. I'm finding driving in traffic in the 993 a bit frustrating - eg in central Glasgow!

Hi mate. Yeah I am in the Southside of Glasgow and work in Cardonald. Commute is pretty much nil, but the public transport is horrendous.. The 944 is not a heavy traffic car and does not like the stop start that the Glasgow rush hour seems to provide.

It is my daily driver however, the task will be to keep the car looking good and using her every day.
 
Regarding daily drivers, My 944 is no longer my daily drive, I only did 1000 miles between the last two mots. As the practicality of it is no longer an issue I`m looking to go over to the dark side like Fen ( unlike you I`m still looking for a 964C4).In France where I live for part of the year, I`ve got my 19 year old 2CV, the 944 for the journey there and back and a Kangoo for transporting aged parents, wheelchairs etc here in South Wales.There`s a certain ammount of fun driving about in a van and they`re cheap as chips second hand and as well-built as the A class I ran for 3 years.The load carrying ability is useful too (250 litres of wine for example).

Hi Graham,

I have used my 944S as a daily driver for the last three years, I've added around 25k miles since I bought the car. Current running costs for this year are circa £1500 (that includes two suspension alignments). I did consider selling the car a month or two ago as I was trying to save money. But after hearing from others on the forum and also talking to colleagues about the running costs of their cars (different makes), I felt I was better off keeping the '44 :)

Well I dont drive daily, I work from home and have a second car plus regular use of a third. However I do use the 944 when ever possible, I think it was last year I did 12,000 miles in around 6 months. Overall since I had it I average approx 15,000 miles a year in it. probably gets the worst of both worlds standing for long periods then long hard runs. Its only let me down a few times, once when a coolant pipe fractured - my fault when I installed the turbo I figured it would be ok without extra support it had on the original turbo. 2 coolant hoses split but it was possible to tape them up at the roadside and continue. It refused to start when warm running guru chips in scotland (1st scottish tour) though Rick new a trick that got it running again. And the one time I had it recovered when the headgasket lost the battle with an iffy boost controller that occasionally gave me 30+psi (lively).
