Have a look in the buyers guide thread, lots of useful info there: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=590025

My first reaction was 'swap you' but then I thought that if my bluff were called I'd struggle to follow through on it! Ref inspections, I had my 964 inspected by Peter Morgan associates when I bought it 8 years ago. In those 8 years, nothing they did not point out has gone wrong i.e. they did an unbelievable job. I put right all the niggles they raised and have had a wonderful ownership experience. When I was looking, I went to some of the obvious larger dealers in N London close to where I live to get a view on what my budget bought me. I used this as a gauge when looking at smaller dealers and private ads. I finally found one, had it inspected and have been thoroughly impressed. Another thing to do is to get to see cars not for sale (shows etc) to understand the range of conditions 20+ year old cars come in so that you know what to be looking for. Silverstone classic has just passed which would have been a good opportunity. One upgrade I have done that really improved the car for me is Bilstein PSS10 suspension fitted by Center Gravity - I like firm suspension (you may not) and this controls body movement well without crashing around over every pothole. Best of luck with your search. Shame you're not closer or we could have met up. Cheers Mick

After a lot of flip-flopping I've decided to sell my 997 GTS 2 manual and go the air cooled route. As a novice I've had to trawl the forums for information and advice and, with a shortlist of 3.2 Carrera and 964, decided on the 964. Now all I have to do is find one! This in itself isn't straight forward. Do I go via a dealer and pay top dollar, or be brave and buy private, knowing that I don't know what to look for?

If anyone knows of a Coupe 2 manual for sale please do let me know. Also there may be one in the midlands area I will be going to see. Can anyone recommend a specialist who could inspect the car for me?

Well it's not too late if you are interested. Likely off to the dealer this weekend. Thanks, both, for the info. Very useful indeed. Edited to add: Masher - I'm in Essex so not too far away.

this is probably a fair reflection of a nice car at a known independent porsche dealer re: price ranges - 30-35k http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/911-964/porsche-911-964-carrera-2-coupe-manual/2595643 About the price you pay for one with most (if not all) the big jobs doing like top end rebuild, body work refresh, brakes, suspension etc. By the time you buy a cheap car that needs all this work doing you will have paid this anyway. A nice c2 manual coupe is going to cost you 30-35k from someone who knows what they have. Some cheaper cars have come on sale recently but dealers have literally snapped them up in hours. Might be worth a wanted ad on here or pistonheads etc and you might get contacted directly on cars from people looking to sell. Personally.....if you arent penny pinching.......I would go check this out, PPI it, buy it. Its a well known car in the rennlist 964 community http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/911-964/porsche-911-964-carrera-2-coupe-manual/2595643 PPI - I think a decent indy may be a better option. They see them all day everyday and know exactly what to look for and can be quite a bit cheaper than P Morgan. Either should be fine though

James - my PM to you got bounced back but if you want to meet and chat 964's I'm in Buntingford near the Herts / Essex border. Give me a shout. Cheers Mick

Thanks all. I have actually spoken to eporsch about their three 964s and was planning to see them. Anyone care to pass an opinion on these: [link]http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C509786#[/link] [link]http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/911-964/porsche-911-carrera-c2-cp/2330782[/link] [link]http://www.lawtonbrook.co.uk/current-stock/for-sale/show/PORSCHE-911-964-CARRERA-2-COUPE-GUARDS-RED[/link] P.S Thanks Mick. James, The first one at carandclassic did not sell at auction last year (Sep 2013) and the reserve was set at around £20K (don't know the reasons why it did not sell). The pics are also from last year, I can PM you the link if you wish. The cars at eporsch look really good, especially the red one. I bought a 964 C2 a couple of weeks ago, after extensive searching. I quickly realised that you have to be very quick of the mark if a cheap one comes up ! Raj

A nice looking Red C2 albeit LHD for £25.5k Suspension looks like it's been lowered. [link=http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-911-964-C2-Guards-Red-70k-miles-Extensive-History-VGC-LHD-/281384087570?_trksid=p2054897.l4275]Ebay[/link]

James the Red one with the plate DMY belonged for a good mate of mine and in his 3 yr ownership had lots of quality work done with people like Parr Motorsport It also had a widows out re-spray when he first got it and Venture shield on the front done its also had a full suspension refresh KW v3 suspension and top mounts and bushes ,personally I thought he was mad to sell it but he purchased a well known Cayman Turbo and just did not use the 964 enough A good car Tony

The good news is there are so many indies catering for the air-cooled on the network and for sure, here or renlist , you'll get an honest consensus of each. I've heard good things about one of the biggies - JZM. I've used only RPM Technik for all my Porsche needs and they've been great - what Ollie doesn't know about 911's isn't worth knowing (as many others I'm sure). Engine pointers all share the same theme and advice. Bodywork and the typical weak points for tinworm are there too and need double checking. Stacks of continuous improvement and maintenance techniques are abound. Drive it hard and often, whatever you get!

Thanks for this information. Everyone is really very helpful, and Masher (Mick) has sent some very useful info by email. I enquired about the blue one and got no reply so the fact that it didn't meet it's reserve is interesting. I've passed on that one. The red LHD one is in fact sold - I had found that one previously. The blue one at Criddocks is a 4 and I was really after a 2. The red one at eporsch does look very nice. I had made an appointment to see it last Saturday but events overtook me. Perhaps rashly, though after discussion with the mechanics at RPM in Knaresborough who are preparing the car for sale at Lawton Brook, I have put a deposit down on their car, subject to seeing it in the metal. It is apparently all in very good original condition, but RPM are doing the following for Lawton Brook: front lower bushes, strut top bushes, 4 wheel alignment, oil pipe at crank, caliper refurb, new undertray (missing) new bonnet and engine cover struts, full service, leather refurb, repair small blister on O/S front wheel arch, m/c polish, clay bar and Swissvax. There is some slight oil misting on parts of the engine but nothing that concerned RPM. In fact they thought I would be wasting my money to do a compression & leak down test. Sounded OK to me, especially with £900 knocked off the asking price, but I am a novice regarding air cooled Porsches. I think the decision may have been taken largely on the basis of its relatively low mileage, but as Mick pointed out this isn't necessarily the best thing. Looking again at the red one at eporsch it's had all the major work done, though if I bought that one I would be spending £3k more for a car with 50k more miles on the clock. My plan is to get a good base car and develop it from there. Wheels, suspension, exhaust, engine components etc. Whilst I know this will cost money I would like to be part of the process, rather than it being done already. I would also like a Singer inspired interior - tan leather would be good. No idea if this is prohibitively expensive or not. The eporsch one has an advantage here having a black interior rather than linen. I hope I've made the right decision. Certainly by the time I see the car at Lawton Brook the eporsch one will have gone. Thanks again James

i think given your approach and what you want to do with the car the LB car sounds good. Looks nice in pics. Just make sure RPM are being independent/impartial with their assessment and not working for the vendor.

Further update. After a PPI by Performance Porsche (very highly recommended) I'm not buying the car at Lawton Brook. If anyone knows of a C2 manual for sale please let me know. Thanks

James, there is a good thread on rennlist which highlights the 964`s for sale in the uk worth checking it for whats available nice mint green one on facebook at the moment cant remember if its a C2 or 4

Sorry to read it was not in your favour. Just goes to show the value of an independent inspection. Money well spent. The right one will turn up. Good luck with your search.
