M O T and FIA Harness

Apparently you could be failed on a MOT for having the above and not the silly little standard single seat belts............has anyone experienced problems. About to fit 5 point Sabelt Harnesses.
 
Shouldn't be a problem Des. The bit that can fail on older harnesses is the release system which needed two hands.

On a modern harness, i.e. Schroth, the release action is a simple one handed twist!

I thought the MOT required the belt to be able to be PUT ON with one hand on all cars post 1970 odd.

Hence all full harenesses are theoretically not road legal.

My 7 with 4 points never failed an MOT but I was told by Caterham that in theory it could.

From memory Kevin is right about the law on seatbelts - the whole move to inertia reel ones was driven by the need to be able to put it on one handed - therefore harnesses are illegal.

however - the Clubsport passed MOT a couple of months back with only the 6 point harnesses, as did the the Cup Car last year prior to its demise[&o]..
 
Do you have to remove the lap/shoulder reel belt?

I just roll the shoulder straps of the 6-point up, and tuck them in the storage holes in the Boxsters rear storage box, slide the side belts behind the seat padding, and tuck the crotch belts/buckle mechanism under the seat cushion of the GT3 seats.

Then use the normal seatbelt!

There must be a similar way on other cars?

Now now boys..........it's just a bit of fun. So it would appear that I would need to take the car to an understanding MOT station......thank you everyone for the informative replies.

If you have taken offence to this light hearted dig at Boxsters then I'm truly sorry as it was not my intention...purely a bit of light humour at the expense of it's image.
We also own a Boxster (a lowly 2.5 model), and are quite happy to have a laugh at the p1ss take of it being a hairdressers car....I didn't realise it was a taboo subject.

Because yet again my choice of Porsche has been insulted?

I'm fed up with this attitude of one Porsche (ones own of course [8|] ) being "the one" and others being the butt of jokes by those who think it "a larf" to belittle a particular model.

The Boxster is perfectly balanced, is beautiful to look at, provides a fantastic driving experience, can hold enough luggage for a 2 week touring holiday, can run hard on the track for 2 full consecutive days with no ill effects (on car or driver), can be driven across Europe in a day with driver and passenger feeling no ill effects, can comfortably cruise at 150mph+ top down on the autobahn, and can pootle around town if necessary.
I've done all the above in mine, so I speak only from personal experience[:)]

I'm obviously in the minority of thinking that all Porsches have their merits - and that an owner has chosen the one they like for a good reason. Why on earth would ANY Porsche have a "Hairdresser" image? What the hell does that mean anyway? All I know is is that for some reason it is a derogatory remark, and as it is aimed at the Boxster it is aimed at me.
Insult the car and you insult the person who has chosen that car. Repeat ad-infinitum and it really starts to get beyond a joke.

I thought this sort of thing had been left behind in the playground, but apparently not. It is evidently still ok to make fun of people because of the the car they drive, clothes they wear, they way they talk... Where does it stop?
We all drive Porsches, we all love the one we drive, some of us are not so blinkered as to think that ONLY the one we drive can be the one worth driving.

We all belong to the "Porsche Club Great Britain", presumably because we are enthusiasts. Isn't it time we stopped deliberately seeking to offend huge swathes of the membership because: the engine is in the front, the engine is in the back, the engine is in the middle, the engine is water cooled, then engine is too quiet, the car is the wrong shape, the car has too many wheels driven, the car has air-con, the car has a heater that barely works, the car is too soft, the car is too hard, the car is a convertible, the car has a glass roof, the car has 4/6/8 cylinders....

We all like different things, it would be a pretty boring world if we all liked the same thing!
Can't we accept people have bought their cars for different reasons, and that the one they own is just as loved as ones own?

I really like your Car Melv. I envy you for being fortunate enough to be able to run such a vehicle. Does that make it ok to take the p' out of me because I don't have one? I wouldn't be able to do some of the things in my list above if I did have one - but that does not mean I think your car deserves constant derision. At least afford mine the same respect.

And it's white. We all know Melv would have a proper RS if he could afford it. [:D]

Surely a little harmless banter is just good fun. English humour is often based heavily on self-deprecation and a strange form of p1ss taking. On forums people tend not to take things the wrong way as (for the most part) nobody is intending to cause offence... and you can always give as good as you get. My 964RS has many shortcomings and I am happy for people to take the mickey from my car, or myself, as long as it is done with good humour. It shows acceptance, I suppose.

I think the Boxster is a smashing car but it has too many cupholders for me. I suppose this forum's hardcore nature (being the 964RS forum after all) may mean the odd hairdresser/boxster joke would be inevitable. But when they do a Boxster RS I will be first in the queue for a test drive.

But please keep posting and don't get too wound up. I like you here [:)]
 
Just a side issue really but I 've never understood the "hairdressers car " jibe. The majority of cars that fall under this bracket are usually expensive which would imply that hairdressers are succesfull business people and If the girls in my local hairdressers are anything to go by I'd be more than happy to be seen in one. Being driven by a gorgeous female with immaculate hair seems fair enough to me[:D]
 
I was told that you needed to have 3 point interia reel seat belt for the road (unless the car is old enough to have non-inertia reels, or even older, none at all).
The multi-point harnesses, are not strictly speaking, road legal, even though they hold you better.
So a road car should have both - i.e. you cannot just have the multi-point harness.
This is what my OPC told me.

However, MOTs seem to be "negotiable".[;)]
 
just to agree with Stuarts opinion, having completely removed the standard seat belts from my 993RS in favour of multi-point harnesses,Iwas told I would have problems when it came to an Mot.
In practise however the Mot station had no problem and commented that so long as the belts were in good working order they were happy !!
To conclude its just a matter of finding an understanding Mot station.
