Mag Wheels

Just a suggestion -

what about buying the freely available "fronts" and having Dymag machine off the Rim and fit a Carbon fibre rim with the correct width and offset for the rear? Then finish them in silver.

Hi there ,
there is a company in kent called Creasy casting , all they do is magnesium parts and they manufacture all the wheels for Dymag ( mag wheels for cars and bikes ) they are very nice people , they may well have the info of looking after and preparing and powder coating ect.. Dymag on there web is offering refurbish service (only for their wheels) they may have some info as well ..

They look like a good company to approach to discuss the potential cost of RS mag reproductions?

hi ,

I am sure they can , the cost of the casting and developpement would need a big group buy , the other alternative but not period look is to buy the 18 " 993 mag center speedline center lock and have them drilled for the 5 studs you can apparently buy them for about 750 € a wheel in Germany .

You can put me down for a set.[:)]

I had my mags refurbed by Pristine in Woburn Sands back in June following the discussions here and they seem to be OK. I recall that you had yours done there also, are you still happy with them?

Sounds like a good idea, maybe cheaper than a set of std Dymags at £2k, (Dymag already do mags with a carbom rim (in std gt3 sizes I think but ooh the price!)

I have emailed them but am awaiting a reply.

Apparently the latest BBS Ali's are light --- but is there anywhere to compare the weights of alternatives ??

Chris, I'd be very interested in hearing what Creasey have to say regarding costs if we could get a large enough group of us interested and someone is willing to loan a perfect front and rear to cast from.

For wheel-weights see the link below - Click 'Felgen' in the left column, then click the link 'tabelle' to view a table containing most standard Porsche Wheel Options (incl BBS/Speedline) including their weights without tyres.

I had my mag's refurbed about five years ago by Ian Jemmison Engineering of Bishopthorpe, York. I remembered his details as the guy who repaired magnesium Minilite rally wheels for years, as advertised in Motoring News.Judging by this forum's experiences I'd say he did a good job as they remain unmarked after plenty of use EXCEPT that ane of the front rims has crazed and did not improve for long after it was re-done (F O C ). This is not uncommon with magnesium and is apparently to do with gas between rim and paint?

For the record he uses the dipping method so the lettering remins intact. He is used to Porsches as he has a 996, rallies a Boxter and supplies many por sche dealers with wheel re-furbs.

Take pics and tell them you want a refund or part refund as you need to get the job done again.

Then get it done elsewhere by someone who knows what they are doing and can do mag wheels!

i have said that, but they want to see the wheels to check that they have been mis treated

is it possible to get these done where the paint wont fall off when doing a trackday? i have heard of this happening to someone else in here

who is the best for doing them?

ChrisW has had the same problem with refurbed wheels. My set has been ok but I think mine were respayed and not stripped back. I believe Chris is having his wheels 'baked' several times before painting this time around. I saw reference on here to have the wheels vacuum baked to remove any gas and moisture.

I had my wheels refurbed by Diamond Styling and they started bubbling very soon after the first track day. To be fair, they were very happy to take them back and said before the refurb that it is difficult to ensure there is no moisture trapped under the paint.

Good luck.

The set I used last year were in a terrible state --- with the powder coating bubbling off three of the four rims very quickly.

This time I have tried Ian Jemmison in York who does a lot of the mag wheel repairs fro pristine wheels and has been playing with Minilites for many years.

He has baked them for two weeks, then re-cleaned them, primed and twice painted them, all in the day.

His opinion was that the original powder coating had not been cured properly, because it was too brittle. As I've said, they look great now, but ask me in five years ?

The second set of very rough wheels, coated by the same people, were fitted for Oulton Park on te 6th.

The are already bubbling ad may not last the season. Once the powder coating lifts I won't want to get too much moisture into them, so I guess I'll have them done again.

I did get in touch with Creasey Castings who could make exact copies of the SM wheels if Porsche would allow them to. They would love to have access to the original tools but, who knows if this would be possible ?

The cost per set (with tooling) of ten sets would be £40,000 --- new. Any takers for a set at £4k per set ?

Ian Jemmison says that in his view the worry that Mags turn into a pile of white powder once they are 15 years old, is a myth.

Where next ??

Yes, I like Ian.

No rash promises, but one "knows" that he has done his best, so if there are problems it won't be for the want of either trying or expertise.

'Can't ask for more iMHO.

OK Jason, now put your business hat on.

Were you expecting a refund, or the job redone by the same company that has already messed up once, at a discounted price ? ?

Will the refund ever happen ? How many excuses are there ?

I know that seems a bit judgemental, but one cannot endlessly strip and re-paint/coat a set of Mag rims ....
