Mallory FCs race!

Its a shame more cars didn't make it to the end. I hope the guy with the BMW was OK, I spotted a lot of flames coming out of that thing, he parked it up twice ISTR. Also what happened to the 2 red Alfas and another hatch that were sat on the grid next to me ? Watching that vid all I can see is one red Alfa sud that was miles behind and the Davrian, then later there is a 33 behind and I can't remember passing him or seeing him spin off so where did he come from [:D].

That was too much of a blur.

At this rate Andy CSCC will be needing a Porsche classic series [8D].

I will shut up now, this is Mark's thread really [:)].

Its both our thread![:D]
With the lucky win at Spa,and this great result at Mallory this year has exceded what i thought could happen in a first year, this racing lark is lots of fun and really occupies alot of space in my head, maybe a little two much,i like qualifying very much and this was the first time i didn't stay out the full 30 mins as i had done enough before the end,the waiting bit before the race is the bit i don't like it just seems to take AGES!Was a bit edgy at the start and really fluffed the launch, but as it happened i almost smiled to myself because i thought "well i have 40 mins to try to fix this!"In Porsche club that would have been it,the racing is that close...Really looking forward to next week to see how the penalty affects things and feel like i can just enjoy the race,36 cars on the grid i read....It will be a big race hope with the extra space at Silverstone its not too hairy........
Mike- the video was great to watch its suprising how much you forget because of concentrating. On the subject of offs i had alot of close moments more than i would have liked, and i overshot the hairpin and went very close to the wall,i could tell by their body language the marshals got nervous! My car had it's first bit of "contact" aswell in quali at the hairpin there was a car in front of me and the elderly driver behind me failed to take this into account and misjudged his stopping distance,i mentioned it to him in the paddock and he didn't even know he had done it until he examined his car to see some Maritime paint on it...[:D]
Great fun this and well organised too.

Wish I could get to Silverstone but I'm going to the Masters at Donington!
Good luck both of you then.

Cheers

Mike

Cheers Mark. As you can imagine he says he was trying to encourage you on a bit to go faster [:D]. He also gave me a bit of ribbing saying I blocked him in Gerrards but to me he wasn't go quick enough to get past so there was no way I was going to go off line there so he could trundle past going about 2 mph quicker, this ain't no track day [:D]. As it was he did me in to the Esses anyways.

Is it just me as a Rookie but has FC got loads more competitive? both of us picked up dings, I must have seen a good 3 or 4 cars spin off in the race, do you remember the dirt and grass all over the exit of Gerrards. All the front guys had the cars drifting and weaving about in and out of the corners, and that gaggle you where in seemed to be right up each others chuff for about 15 minutes solid.

CSCC did a great job, definitely agree with that one. Saturday we get our own garages, how [8D] is that.

3 or 4 ! I got pics or video of 5 off track trips BMW x 2 (same place!) Alfalfa green 944 and red an white 944 - an saw 2 more whilst moving positions - looked full on "competitive" to me!
Loved it!
Mike

That's fantastic, Mark. Have you got a diary of races so some of us can come and support? We need a range of Maritime Blue merchandise! [8D]

The next one is this Saturday at Silverstone. I'm working in the morning so am hoping the race itself has an afternoon slot so I can finally make it along to watch 'our boys' [:D]

Brilliant!I have a 30 second penalty now though[&o]so it will be tricky to do well, but i am going to keep on trying, see you Sat hopefully!I have Cadwell sports car V saloons the next weekend, then an invitation race at Brands on the GP circuit the next week after that,my poor car, hope she makes it in one peice!

The win in Spa i got counts as interseries, but any overall win in a normal future classics series race gives you a 30 second penalty to make it fair incase someone is really quick and keeps winning, the car that came second at mallory had a penalty of 30 seconds from their win at Cadwell,so i only really won by 5 seconds in reality. Its a CSCC thing -which is a good idea i reckon it evens it out a bit,if you win a second time it goes up to 60 seconds and so on...
Just going to enjoy the racing and being there now, glad it happened at mallory with the kids there,if i could have picked one that would be it.[:)]

Hmmm. Anyone know entry costs? WUF is looking good for Friday at the minute, I can feel an outing coming on.

Many congrats chaps - even the video got my pulse racing so I can't imagine the rush you must get in the driver's seat!

I'd be interested to know your line through Gerards. I chopped and changed all day on a recent track day at Mallory, including a spin almost identical to that early on in the video, but by the end of the day I think I had what for me was the best line, and was able to pull away from my pal in his KW3 + R888 964 and pass a few Elise's on R888's too - mind you, didn't half take me by surprise when a Radical took me on the outside!

I tried to carry as much speed in as possible, and stay roughly in the middle of the track, then gradually build up speed on the throttle, staying roughly central, then about 2/3rds round the bend, take a slightly tighter line and end up kissing the apex on the brow just before the end of the corner. Looking back at the in-car footage, I would say my entry speed was about 85mph, and exit speed about 110mph.

Great fun though and the car felt pretty planted - my 10in rears probably help some!

Sounds about right Ben, I experimented a fair bit as it was the one corner I was getting well wrong in testing, mostly as just not used to the possible speeds. Mid corner speed in my S2 is pretty much bang on 90 mph, I know as I had a glance in quali to compare with the pitiful 82-83 mph or so in testing (sadly though same again in the early race laps as not comfortable with grip level and didn't understand that the Dunlops come on very fast once they get some heat in them but conversely you have to push them to get the heat in [&o]). TBH many go for mid track in the first 2/3rds and many for a tighter line and it honestly doesn't seem to make much difference.

I have no idea what a good or typical entry speed is for either myself or anyone else as to busy at that point to glance at the speedo.

The apex is definitely the thin white painted kerb on the last motorbike chicane exit about 3/4 way round, from there if full throttle is deployed my car will run out up onto the exit kerb at about 115 mph. Yes I will admit I shouldn't have looked at the speedo, my advice don't look at the speedo is puts the fear factor in then its too scary to keep your foot in. I shouldn't admit to this but I pussied out [:D] and never once kept my foot in last weekend, bta I also don't trust understeer and this is what the car is doing right now.

A big thing I learned about Gerrards is not to turn in to late of the straight, the far left is very bumpy and I understand now this is what caused me to spin in testing not the late braking. Not braking late was loosing me 2+ seconds a lap last weekend, not a mistake I am going to make again, IMHO if I don't give it 100% commitment in the car there is no point turning up. It seems many racers alter their braking line to miss the far left of the track prior to corner entry, I went for about 2/3rds over so I could get straight on the throttle to keep the speed up, TBH it was the only thing I did right last weekend.

BTW IMHO the best driver round that corner on the track last weekend was Ben Eacock, he seemed to me to be quicker there than anyone else, definitely shows the benefit of a light weight low power car and maximum attack driving.

Who was driving the white 944 in the video toward the end that came out of that corner at maximum attack. I liked that a lot[:)] I must go there are compare what I can pull to get a measure of things. Isn't there quite a nasty off camber bend after the exit of that long bend? I've only seen it from the sidelines but how do you find the room to get the weight back neutral and brake at those speeds? Is it tight for time?

Not half. I can't speak for anyone elses cars but comparing my S2 race car to what my mildly modified S2 road car was like I would make the following comparisons;
- Braking performance broadly similar, if anything I am sure my car was more stable under brakes than it is now or it may just be my impression.
- Grip and hence mid corner speeds far far higher, probably more like 10+ mph faster in many corners and this really compresses time down, if the corner you are asking about Ben is the Esses then its a roughly 85 mph corner and foot to the floor between the apexes. On foot it looks a tight corner hard to believe how fast you can go through there.
- Acceleration massively better due to the 200 Kg drop in weight
- Stability at speed much better but this may be due to the cars setup, tbh I don't mind a little mid corner instability as long as the car is stable on the way in.

Another difference again I am sure due to setup difference is a dynamic one, my old home brew S2 setup had understeer on entry if to fast and always oversteer mid corner or exit if a bit to much throttle used. Race car right now is the complete opposite.

I would say trying to drive a 944 race car fast is really closer to trying to obtain fast times out of a gokart than driving a 944 road car, the way my car grips and feels from the wheel (no PAS on mine) really is like a gokart in terms of reactions, feel and grip. TBH it is something I am still trying to adapt to, only had about 1.5 hrs total useful time in the car so far.

I believe the white S2 would have been Alex Eacock if it was in the later part of the race, Pete Morris went first in that car. Both top drivers.

Mark informs me the Future Classics race that he and Neil are in at Silverstone starts at 4:30 on Saturday so I will be able to make it and hope to see you guys in the paddock [:)]. Qualifying is at 11am if anyone else can make it
