You know, I'm sure; it's that Testosterone "thing" [;)]

For "Catboy" I've replied to your message and will do the articles Wednesday.

Meanwhile I'm off for a mini-break in my gas guzzling, powersapped and thrill strangled Tip Boxster.[:D]

OK, I was pretty much convinced on the tiptronic, however having looked at a couple of ropey 2.7 tips in my price range, and some low-spec'ed manuals, I have just brought (well last night) a fully loaded manual 2.5. I know its kind of the baby of the bunch, but Im well chuffed with it. Its got a lux pack, electric pack, sound pack, wind deflector, etc., etc., low mileage, and has been really well looked after.

Thanks for your comments guys, they didnt go to waste...
Hopefully I will catch up with some of you guys at a show or something sometime soon

Another point worthy of note with the Tiptronic; I think the car has some sensors for measuring cornering force, the box won't change up part the way through the corner and unsettle the car, unlike some other auto boxes fitted to performance cars.
Together with a handful of (non-accesable) programmes that adapt the changes to suit your current driving style, the tiptronic is not just any old slush box - it's a very clever and useful box of tricks.

To add to this, I drove Audi tiptronics (A6 & S8) prior to getting my Boxster 2.5 Tip and the Porsche is far more realistic to a manual than the Audi's. The Boxster will downshift when approaching a roundabout (for example) based upon road speed, braking, etc, so you do get engine braking where you need it. The Audi's was like most autos in that it would only downshift in response to accellorator inputs, such as when pulling away from a roundabout and engine load meant a lower gear was necessary.

The Boxster's tiptronic also has several 'modes' where upchanges are timed based upon your recent driving style - in simple terms, if pootling about it'll change up early, if you've just floored it away from a junction it holds the next gear to the redline as well.

Overall, the Porsche tiptronic is far more reminiscent of the manners of a manual than others I've tried, although (by definition) it will never offer complete driver control of the gears in all situations as a manual does. If an auto is a 'must-have' then IMO the Porsche one does offer more than standard autos by other makers.
